TAG Heuer F1 Automatic GMT Watch - Full Review & Discussion - Ref. WAZ211A.BA0875

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Last week I was given an extremely generous gift by a friend, viewer and supporter of the channel. After a week of wear I decide to give the watch the full "Urban Gentry" treatment and review. Could this offering from TAG be the GMT to end my endless search for an automatic duel time complication? As my first TAG, this watch is a very surprising timepiece indeed. While far from perfect it packs a lot in it punch considering its price and has opened my eyes to a brand I had naively overlooked in the past.

I think TAG is headed in the right direction. They seem to be wanting to correct their image some and get back to an in house type of company. I know a lot of people have issues with their advertising campaigns, but I personally think it is just as ridiculous that I had to see Omega commercials every 5 minutes during the Olympics a few months ago. Another thing that really annoys me is how people will bash on TAG for using an ETA movement in a watch and act like it is the worst thing in the world but then other companies like IWC or Omega do it and it's ok just because they are owned by Swatch. The other reason I see them bashed is because you can buy them in more places and not only select boutiques like a Rolex... Who cares? It is smart marketing as opposed to the wasting money opening stores or making your product difficult to find. And If you are so superficial that you have to be catered to and hunt down some a watch in a specific AD store then you have much bigger issues. I don't think TAG is trying to be the best of the best, but as an entry to mid level luxury watch I think they have a place.

Well said! I bought myself a Formula 1 for my sixteenth birthday recently, and I love it! Keeping very good time as well + or - a second or two a day :). Tag gets too much hate in the watch community, I think the quality is good and the brand is a great entry point to luxury Swiss watches.

Their Calibre 36 is a Zenith El Primero movement is it not? Not much wrong with that is there. They do make some cheap looking watches but they also make some excellent watches in my opinion.

Tag Heuer brand sells very well over here in the UK (Brits love our racing heritage) and I have to admit they've really gone in the right direction over recent years. Snobs will still shun this watch brand but you'll be hard pressed to find another type of watch that fits the bill for every occasion. Either on a yacht, in the gym or at a board meeting it crosses all bases 🤘

I have owned this very same watch for nine years. It has just arrived back from TAG Heuer having had its first service and it looks stunning again, especially the bracelet clasp which had become badly scratched. I have throughly enjoyed wearing my GMT and the positive comments I have received from friends and acquaintances when they have noticed it on my wrist. Well done TAG, as far as I’m concerned you made a belter with the Formula 1 GMT.

One thing I do love about tags... because of their almost "invicta" stigma, the used market is outstanding. matt plechan You might want to actually study economics before making such a comment. von Mises was more of a political economist than a real one. He wrote polemics, not papers. Milton Friedman would be a better reference for that style, and he was a real economist.

  • @luisjgt1

    @luisjgt1

Keynes was a pederast and a con man. He changed his opinion very often, according to what was more convenient politically. Von Mises was a real economist. Consistent and intellectually honest all his life. Friedman's "style" (I guess you mean "school of thought") had profound differences with the Austrian School, so Friedman is considered a "Monetarist" which is a different "style" of economist.

Excellent video TGV, so glad to hear you speak about the snobbery around luxury watches and how people look down on TAG Heuer and especially those that wear TAG Heuer. The whole thing imo originates from the popularity and ubiquity they accumulated when they rebranded. Sure they became a go to brand for non-watch lovers looking to splash some cash but don't Rolex suffer from that to? Popularity simply isn't a good enough reason for snobs to slate and dismiss the works of a long established, prestigious company that at times is on the vanguard of pushing things forward (a little). Admittedly some of their designs are a little too garish for me but I can still admit they will be quality pieces. I don't necessarily want a TAG but I can respect them.

Thanks for another interesting review TGV! I just purchased my first GMT watch- to be used purely as a tool watch. First, if a GMT watch does not have a bezel that rotates in both directions, I couldn't use it. Second, I'm finding that putting a true GMT into actual usage take some getting used to. My usage is as follows: , set GMT hand to GMT/UTC. regular hands to local time. Find the offset of the city you wish to track, for example, I'll google "time Melbourne, AU" and find the offset as GMT+11. I then rotate the bezel 11 hours counterclockwise- (clockwise for negative offsets). Now the watch tracks 3 time zones. The Rolex batman is on my bucket list- even though I've not even tried one on yet. What really appeals to me about it is the way the GMT hand jumps a full hour at time when adjusting, as well as the regular hour hand? Could an owner confirm or describe this operation?

Tristano, thanks for an honest and realistic evaluation of the Tag. I certainly appreciate your willingness to admit your own prejudices, and overcome them. If anything, I think maybe you overdid it a bit. But that’s just my point of view. One of my sons has a Tag that he is very proud of,but I have noticed the comments in the KZread channels, and have wondered what to think. I believe that people like to have a whipping boy in their areas of interest, and tend to jump on the nearest bandwagon. This happens in the car world, the sports world and just about any arena I can think of. So I doubly appreciate your willingness to go against the flow, and appraise the watch based on its merits and not on the judgments of the crowd, as you often do!👏

Never doubted TAG Heuer. My first 'luxury' Watch was a Tag and noticed that some people hate on them... other do love them, for sure. I am still a fan after owning mine for 7 years. I can wear it to a wedding, to the gym or idk any occasion really. What I love about Tag and even low end Tags are that the materials are just as good as a top tier watches but they wont be a real target to thieves, not as much as a rolex and even if it is stolen its not a HUGE loss. I would recomend this over Omega or rolex. Tudor is its closest competitor in my opinion, with Tissot also close to the oposite direction.

I live in Mexico so owning a Rolex or even use it on a regular basis is just unwise to my criteria. (I've been assaulted multiple times in my young life) It can happen to anyone and wearing an expensive watch is just not worth it. Can cost you more than the watch.... Hahahahahaha for me wearing something like a rolex or driving a ferrari just puts a target on your back which is never cool. Totoyas and Casios for me hahahahahaha they are as good as anything out there.

Hi TGV, Now I'm feeling much better with my wish to buy a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 5. The comments you used to give about Tag Heuer in comparison with other Swiss entry luxury brands, gave me a slightly bad feeling whether it's the right decision or not. Best regards, Claus

+Claus-L. Müller (CLMac66) Claus, buy with confidence! If the Carrera Calibre 5 you want (which is extremely tasteful and classy looking I might add) is anything like this f1, then you have nothing to worry about. Go for it! Cheers, Best regards, TGV

The clasp has the "diver" style extension on it to let drivers wearing their driving gear at a track day be able to wear it over the driving suit.

When we speak of Tag Heuer there is only one watch I have in mind and really adore. The MONACO. The first automatic Chronograph introduced in 1969. The legendary watch that Steve McQueen is wearing in the iconic 1970 film Le Mans. You must do a review for this watch sometime

Diver extension possibly used to wear over a racing suit just like it's designed to wear over a wet suit.

Hi TGV .That's a clever gift from your friend . Heuer is a brand which has an exciting history ( I recommend the blog "on the dash "): Autavia , Monza , Carrera , Monaco and the amazing Silverstone....... Just see today the formula 1 in a tag heuer boutique and agree with your comments. The new aquaracer is also very interesting . Best regards

Tag serial numbers the letters are the watch model and movement. The numbers before the period are the case finish and dial color. The numbers after the period are the bracelet.

My first most expensive watch to my collection 15 yrs ago was a Tag ,,formular 1,, with a white dial chronograph,, it hasn’t had much wrist time , as I have never worn it to work, , but it still works and looks like new ,, my wife bought it me for a valentines present ,, 1050 uk pounds it cost at the time ,, and I never want to own a Rolex,, because of my bias ,,, I’ve met a few what I call nobs who own them ,,, omega , and various expensive watches I like ,,,but never Rolex ,,,that’s just my personal opinion,,,anyhow great 👍 video ,,,Shane uk 🇬🇧

That's trippy.. when I started the video I heard a police siren and I thought it was your video so I paused it.. and a SFPD cruiser just flew by with their siren on as well. I thought it was just in the video but it was actually in real life too. Haha

Hey TGV, Thanks for another awesome review! It does look like a well executed piece, but the stamped metal on the bracelet clasp sure does turn me off a bit. The finishing on the case does look really nice though! -AJ

Another nice vid, TGV, cool that you got the review up so fast. I have to say for me, the reason I struggle with the current TAG Heuer market offerings is they lack a bit of character or distinctiveness to set them apart. This is ironic, because of course, I knew of Heuer before the acquisition by TAG in the early 80's, as they were revered for their racing stopwatches (much like Hanhart), which is how i knew the company when I was a young lad and F1 fan. What I *do* like very much, however, are pre-TAG vintage Heuers, particularly the Autavias. Unfortunately, they have become quite expensive on the vintage collectors market.

+Stephen Scharf Truly excellent comment, thank you Stephen. I completely understand, a very valued input to the discussion. I too prefer the Heuers of old but I must say, this watch was a very pleasant surprise. Best regards, TGV

+The Urban Gentry Hi TGV, thanks for the reply. Yes, I have seen and held that specific watch in person as a good friend at work who is a real watchonista just bought one a few months ago. I do like the case shape and finishing which harkens back to the vintage Heuers. I think it's very attractive, well-made, but like you, I find the non-rotating bezel (which I really like the look of, BTW) a bit of a disappointment. In summary, I think it's a really nice watch, but it doesn't "sing" to me. For the same amount of money, I'd get a nice minty pre-owned Sinn 240, for example.

+theurbangentry great review. I too always dismissed tag heuer, even though tag really saved the original heuer company when it was really struggling in 1985. non rotating bezel, but neither does the bezel on the rolex explorer 2! nice too see its not a overblown case size. definitely put a nato on it, maybe a dark brown zulu and enjoy a great gift : )

I think the F1 Grande date was a nice watch ( before they slapped a Gulf symbol on it ) and the Carreras are beautiful. They don't do themselves any favours with there ads though. It would be cooler to use vintage photos of Paul Newman and steve mcqueen. Wearing them at Le Mans. Just my tuppence worth.

Nice bit of kit!! VN was a real gent with this gift and for that a keeper. Personally I love Heur, pre Tag era pieces, and I proudly owned a Autavia chrono. Again, as in the case of your GMT, it had the double function of a Diver and saw frequent salt water. A few negs I agree with in the review. Did you touch on the GMT hand ? is it indipendant or just a 2 time zone, as in the case of the Explorer 2. Ciao.

+The Urban Gentry I've got the first generation aquaracer which nowadays doesn't get much use plus the analogue and digital aquaracer which I wear most days and has been the watch I've been over the world in lol it's been in most of my scuba dives and then I have a calibre 5 display back model aquaracer that I bought 2 years back from the tag outlet store here in the uk. All of these are good functional time pieces and are good and have never let me down. Had the digital/ analogue serviced from watch finder this year and now looks new again. If you like Tgv I could send you over some pictures on them ? Regards Vincent
