*lol* If it's ITF sparring rules, it would be so deadly for the WTF guy since no protection for the chest and the stomach and the ITF guy would have higher chance to punch the WTF guy in the face.

wouldn't affect the outcome since ITF isn't full contact. but your right once they allowed head shots the WTF guy would have a tattoo punched into his head.

you two have it totally backwards. You have to get inside the kick for punch to work at all. ITF would have his head kicked off before he was in range to punch. Only way he would win is if WTF guy was disqualified for excessive force (which is likely i guess).

go watch some old kickboxing video's there basicly ITF but full contact. then tell me how come the end up inside punching to the head? even in WTF they end up in clinches that's the point where they would get punched in the head. just because they don't go full contact in the tournaments doesn't mean they can't. so long as both fighters are fighting by the same rules.

i guess your right about the clinch but WTF never trains soft (and you never want to be in a clinch anyway). There is that whole muscle memory thing to consider. If your muscles don't train to hit hard than they wont remember to hit hard. ITF also don't remember to combo because fight stops to often.

My two daughters (11 and 14 years old) train in the ITF since 4 years ago. They don't train with contact. But three times in the last year they have used it successfully in the street, even in situations with no physical advantage. I have to thank ITF Tae Kwon Do for this.

i used to do both... started as a ITF hwoarang and now im doing wtf and i have to say do not let the look of the armour and the acrobatics fool ya wtf is mean. i have been beaten more in wtf than itf.. and the no punch to the face rule makes it difficult for a guy like me with long arms. the protectors makes it that people kick more and hit you more. in itf every kick had a toll so all of a sudden your fighting style seems to change a bit because of the damage you sustain. I also while practicing ITF made the mistake to think wtf was a joke but they are both taekwondo the wtf guys have a different aproach to training and sparring. in some way they are more athlete's and they want to take there abilities to new heights. ITF was more about the martial art and the DO (way of taekwondo). that you could take your entire life becoming better. WTF because of how competitive they are this guys work out and train so different. if you want to sit behind a keyboard complain try them both and you will know the true differences and you will understand my words.

The moment I see a TKD fight start and the arms dangle instead of being a guard I drop out. Use your arms goddamn it. Better yet fight full contact with ITF rules of punching. I am 2. kup under ITF and WTF. I have to say that I favor the style I learned under ITF rules. It feels more complete as a martial art. Still not appliccable without cross training for self defense but ascfor your protective reflexes in combat you are better off than WTF. I am a heavy weight (100 kg) so fancy acrobatics aren't for me anyways.

Trained under ITF rules for nine years but just today quit my job of almost two years as a WTF Instructor. I'm going back to ITF. WTF teaches explosiveness, more kicking dexterity and a more competitive mental attitude. However, explosiveness doesn't necessarily translate to power, and a competitive mindset is different to a combative mindset. The primary reason I train martial arts is self-defence, self-discipline and mental toughness, which is what ITF excels in teaching. We have arms. It doesn't make sense not to use them.

Even though the ITF fighter was fighting in a different rule set, he did really well. I think it goes to show that even though both use different rules, it's still Taekwondo at the core. Great fight, thanks for uploading.

I was a Blackbelt in ITF and I also currently a Blackbelt in WTF and I believe ITF is better for sparring as i was always in the heavy weight category because I am shorter but I could use my hand techniques to get in and score against taller opponents and WTF is good but due to the fact you can only punch to the chest to score it is a lot harder to gain an advantage and when you look at WTF fighters they are tall where ITF has a larger variety of fighters of all sizes. There seems to be a lot of negative comments towards ITF and I have seen fighters of all grades sparring and people think ITF is semi contact all the time when it isn't and ITF don't wear chest protectors. People who have done both styles would probably have a similar opinion. WTF is in the olympics while ITF can't be because of ITF, TAGB which are pretty much follow the same rules aren't allowed in the olympics for political reasons. The Olympic committee won't allow poomsae in the olympics which is mainly what is practiced in clubs and sparring attracts people in joining although there is a England poomsae squad.

NO THAT IS NOT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE. in wtf you can connect and fall to the ground and it will still be valid, in ITF you can not fall to the ground. in wtf the fight stop on each point scored. In ITF the fight is continuous and only stops if theres an infraction. in wtf your arms are useless. in ITF you can punch body and face, either on the floor or jumping. those are the main differences, and theres more. if they used ITF regulations. the WTF guy would get his face filled with punches. then you would see that there is a very big difference. it would make more sense to use ITF rules, adding tools for both fighters and not wtf rules where it gets more limited.

Jay-Ian Pabilan Itf, Wtf, it doesn't matter. WTF fighters move more freely. Just because their hands are down, doesn't make them bad fighters, it's what's comfortable. There are no rules saying you can't keep your hands up. These fighters need to condition their feet. As a WTF fighter, some of my upper class-men were surprised when I didn't get hurt when I kept hitting their elbows. I was surprised too, but I knew my conditioning was working. And made their elbows feel sore since i would go 50% lmao. WTF is not weak, just needs to wake up.

+Jay-Ian Pabilan actually in the old days, in the 80s, we trained without letting our guard down. but since it has become more sport, letting guard down is to lure opponent to make a move and more relax to execute faster kicks. personally i train with my guard up. reason is i am older, slower now and no more fancy kicks. what i can do as a young man, now i cannot. i only limit. a few simpler kicks with lots of power, a lot more hand techniques.

im here to say that i respect both two distinct styles WTF and ITF. It doesnt matter who wins or loses, all different types of martial arts are perfect. Its just a matter of question of who and what are the capabilities of that person. Now if you guys are gonna keep going about which style is better youre looking at it wrong both styles are perfect in combat both used in the military its just depends on how they utilize the style if you know how to adapt in combat whatever what martial art you are practicing will be perfect. WTF sparring has a different focus just because they only show kicking that doesnt mean in self defense they dont use fist or takedowns to bring down an enemy this sparring is a sport not combat. while for ITF its sparring is more focused in combat so most of the time its self defense focused like kickboxing but all this doesnt matter as long as we respect other martial arts and martial artist because if you dont youre a shame in the name of MARTIAL ART FOR FORGETTING THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IN MARTIAL ARTS : RESPECT. STOP THE BASHING BETWEEN ITF AND WTF.

I've done both most of my life but decided to stay ITF. For the more traditional approach ive studied boxing and some karate also its true WTF is more about the points but they also teach good self defence the kicks are technical but if the practitioner gets caught up in the points aspect when in a real fight they may loose because of the fancy points kicks. A lot of ITF schools don't teach the same kicking stategies or allow you to compete in many hard-full contact events but i have. ITF is more simular to Karate in my opinion the techniques are more focused towards stopping a fight instead of continuous sparing (wtf) the reason for the chest pad is the kicks aren't held back so its a protection thing if Itf didn't make you to learn to control your power while sparing people would get hurt. ITF full contact hurts if your not ready for it. they both teach tenants of TKD embrace both learn from each other

It may or may not have been different under ITF regulation. At the end of the day it's skill. The WTF fighter here was clearly more comfortable. Two different fighters and maybe the ITF would have won. Can't judge on one fight.

I've trained ITF and WTF. And certainly can say ITF is much much better. But I have to say on ITF version I've been trained by Korean. It was much more than full contact. We trained how to use TKD on a street. We used throws, grapplings, punches and kicks. I've been on one tournament and I've broke a nose to the guy with punch. And also, unfortunately, I used it on a street as a defence, and it was very successfully. On WTF we were trained only for tournaments. There were no creativity. And we were equipped with full armor. On ITF we had only gloves. No halmets and other stuff. Also on WTF we had semi contact trainings. When I came on my first WTF training, and when they saw my skills they put me in the best group and sad to me that they have plans for me, and I will be very successefull in TKD. They wanted me to go on tournaments. And that was not the reason why I trained TKD. I trained for a few years and I stopped just because I never learned something new on WTF. So if you're training or you have trained ITF, and it is semi or no contact, than it is not ITF. ITF is much harder than WTF. ITF is a martial art, and WTF is just a sport. And I had a chance to prove the power of ITF on the street many times, and also I had a chance to compare it.

Adrijano Hafner I train WTF, and I have the fortune to be training in a dojang where we learn to use a wide variety of techniques like you just said... I don't think one is more complete than the other... I believe most WTF academies only focus on tournaments so they forget Taekwondo is the art of fighting with your feet AND hands. And... unfortunately, I can see a lot of students not taking seriously the poomsae and all the trainings we do on the real art... so they aren't that good at using their hands...

There is no wtf vs itf. Just a competition between two fighters (each one from different styles) under WTF rules. After WTF inserted its system into the olympic games, this art became to collapse. How do you think you may defeat your adversary using just your feet? There is gap since the creation of TKD as a martial art and present knowledge... TKD was developed to be a complete system of training using your arms and feet. The stress on using the feet was just provide the fighter with an extra combat tool at long distance fighting. Nowadays I see no use of bare hands for boxing or grappling techniques. Every Poomsae stress the need to use this. There several ways to hit using fingers (sonkut), bare hand (son), fist (chumok), elbow (palmuk) in different combination to provide the fighter with several fighting techniques for close combat...

But you can talk to the master of the ITF school you want to go, maybe he let you keep your belt. The only thing that really matters are the poomsae cuz the kicks are the same and the blocks, the fighting combat has a little change but just try to convince him or something. I hope you can keep it.

You guys forget that there's more to WTF than just kicking. Sparring isn't the whole martial art. In a sparring match there are rules that you must follow, the biggest difference between ITF and WTF Tkd sparring matches is that you can punch. In a real street fight a WTF fighter (like me) could easily dominate others when using self defense techniques and punches. WTF also uses punches a lot just not in the sparring part. That's the difference, the actual techniques are very similar since they both just branch off one another so the only real difference are the sparring RULES.

  • @willn4330

No Data it depends though. If you don't practice punches in sparring, how will you use it in a street fight. I don't practice Axe kick because punching is faster and I just don't like it. Since I don't use it in a controlled fight, I wouldn't be able to effectively use it in an uncontrolled. If you don't practice it it doesn't work, end of story.

It is so wrong.. i do sanda, we spare with kicks, punches and throws... I practice that all the time, how do you think you can handle punches from a guy that can land punches on the face of people that are used to defend against that kind of Attack when you are not used to ? It's like thinking as an amateur boxer you could defeat a pro bower ! That's very delusional !

Aaron Sim I don't practice taekwondo but Muay Thai, and in my opinion I liked the Blue one better considering he used speed which is one thing that counter strength all the time. And I've fought both ITF and WTF fighters, out of all of them the WTF fighters rely on "explosion" and timing.

In my opinion, tkd wtf is not a martial art, it's a sport of contact... and because of tkd wtf, ('cause almost nobody knows the difference) most of the people thinks taekwondo is bullshit comparing to another martial art, but they don't understand that wtf don't train punches or full contact moves, that's why if they don't get a lucky hit; they are not challenge for another real martial art. Although taekwondo wtf has incredible fighters, what is bullshit is the way that they turned taekwndo into a sport.
