I didn’t think it was that shocking to the observant viewer. Tadej was in energy management mode drafting on Jonas the whole stage, resisting the temptation to stand off the saddle and pedal many times when Jonas did. Did a good job letting Jumbo’s best burn themselves out leading up front while he stayed aero. Leading the breakaway is a huge disadvantage if you can stay on their wheel. More than that though Tadej just had this look in his eye the whole back half of the stage like he was waiting for favorable conditions to strike. If wout van aert hadn’t carried so hard i think Tadej might have launched earlier

@mtbdawg4987 I agree, but you gotta admit the timing and execution were perfectly done. Tadej made it look as easy as walking in the park and people often undervalue the decision making part of the sports but to me, that's everything about the sports. Tadej knows his limits but also understands what he is capable of. If Tadej wins this year's TDF(that's a big IF), this is the kind of moment that would make him win.

last two stages have been incredible. I was cheering Jonas on yesterday and I was cheering Pog on today. I wouldn't be so sure about that now. JV now has to carry the burden of the yellow jersey and the real tests in the mountains are yet to come. For Pogacar and UAE, this is definitely the better starting position right now. In addition, it must be said that Pogacar has also shown these attacks in 2022, yes he is more explosive than Vingegaard but he was able to close over and over again almost effortlessly. This stage might have shown rather weakening legs of Vingegaard, which I hope not.

Today's stage was deffo one of the best stages I have watched on Tdf ever. And i'm so glad Pog made a comeback today because this means that the rest of the tour will stay intresting. I feel like Jumbo's tatctics were pretty good since they thought they had Pog on his knees yesterday and they just wanted to give him the final blow but they might've underestimated him a little when they attacked with more than 50k to go. Pog might've just had a bad day yesterday and I really hope he just increases his form throughout the tour and I hope his injury won't cause him any problems because this looks like its gonna be a hell of a tour.

  • @michaelhansen1517

On the other hand, if Vingegaard could drop pog and then decent with wva, they would have those 50k to put a greater dent into the GC. Capitalizing on Pog maybe having some form issue here at the start of the race. He usually gets stronger, so would have been good for JV to get a more time on him. Sorta backfired, but i can see why they did it. In any case the rest of the GC got distanced further, so swings and roudabouts.

Jonas hardly did a bloody turn today! He shot his load yesterday trying to gap Pog. WVA goes off the front at the start today, and doing a lot of work to build a big gap so he gets over the Tourmalet before Jonas. Not bloody rocket science to know what Jumbo were planning. jonas pulling pog up both climbs is probably what cost him. in hindsight it should have been a pretty clear tell that he wasn't gonna gap pog the way he was able to follow jonas' attacks seated and glued to the wheel. at that point there's no real reason for jonas to keep pulling, as him and pog are clearly the strongest climber in the field and pog is the one who needs to make up time on jonas, not the other way around. i'm reminded of that stage of the 2010 tour with schleck and contador doing a track stand on ax 3 domaines. it was a very similar situation with two evenly matched riders head and shoulders above the rest, but the one with the better acceleration/sprint behind on GC. after they went clear of the other GC contenders, schleck refused to pull a turn, but contador wanted to stay behind schleck in order to surprise him with an attack. so, they came to a near standstill several times as the other GC guys whizzed past them. in the end, neither made up any time on the other. i can't help but think this would have been the correct play for jonas. he does not need to gain time on anyone else but pog if all the other GC guys are getting dropped by kuss on the second to last climb. yeah pog was stronger today, but i think had jonas played his cards better he would have lost no more than a few bonus seconds. giving pog a free ride for several km on both tourmalet and cauterets was not the move.

Jonas smelled blood in the water after yesterday, so he wanted to drop Pog today and burry him to secure the tour. It’s easy to play it safe, but more often than not taking advantage of a tired/weak opponents works out for the better. No one can fault Jonas for trying to land the killing blow on Pog today. What was shocking was how well Pog recovered to surprise everyone. At least we have an entertaining tour ahead of us and you can bet Jonas will be more cautious moving forward.

This tour is pure crack UAE throwing their weight around the first two stages, Pog popping off attacks everywhere for bonus seconds. UAE feeling like they can go as hard as they want no matter what and Pog will be fine. Only for their hubris to bite them in the ass when Jumbo launch a full blown nuke at Pog, dropping him and taking a whole minute Everyone worried the Tour is over, Pog deflated and with Jumbo confident, they want to finish off Pog once and for all. They lay out the perfect strat with WVA doing shit that defy the law of physics. Keldergoat annihilates the peloton, Kuss ramps it up even more and prepping another nuke they launch it directly at Pog just like yesterday.... but this time.... when the smoke clears.... Pog is still standing there.... Unphased Jumbo ignore it, filled with hubris, they stick with the plan, prepare another round at Pog. And again... nothing. Pog is STILL there holding on. And from seemingly nowhere, when everyone thought Pog is no longer a match for Jonas. He rips an attack from hell. Instantly gapping him and taking back half a minute This is anime tier shit. Unadulterated CYCLISMO

Honestly I think the stage yesterday told us more about the GC of this TDF. Jonas is just way stronger than Pogacar on those longer and higher mountains (like we already knew). But this finish where it leveled off and even had a little downhill was in Pogacar's favour. It'll be fun to watch the upcoming mountain stages but honestly with Pogacar's preparation of 5 weeks I don't think he'll make it through the second and definitly the third week if Jumbo keeps pushing like they showed today. Great team, that's just not what UAE is at the moment sadly enough. I can't see them doing what Jumbo is doing.

I was thinking back to your route reaction pods - remembering how excited you and Benji were about the Giro route and how unenthused you were about the TDF route. Then we've had just an incredible first week of GC battles (and other excitement) in the tour, and the Giro...well, we all know how that turned out. (I have to be careful not to let the memory of the final TT make me forget how forgettable most of the rest of the Giro was.) Not a knock on your route analysis, just a good reminder that the parcours is only one variable...
