German girl with Hungarian/Romanian parents and heritage. My parents reacted kinda the same as Whiskers family, especially since I wore Gothic with platform demonias and corsets before. And boy they didn't approve. When I started wearing Lolita they said and thought "Oh you're just in another weird cult that isn't good for your mental health." Now after a few years they enjoy me in lolita, they are interested in my coords and how the com looks for meet ups, thank God they don't know how much this shit costs but they see that I'm happy. Which makes them happy. As long as you feel adorable when wearing lolita fashion everyone will notice after a while. They now even show pics of me wearing the fashion when they meet their more fashion forward or fashion interested friends. It's a huge step forward and this time will also come for you Whiskers.

When I was a kid in Jamaica the teachers said pokemon was demonic🤣 My family is Jamaican and I’ve liked J-fashion since i was 9. My parents didn't know what it was or where it came from, and didnt like how strange it looked, so it was a lot of pressure to dress as normally as possible. Now my sister who likes K-pop, beauty, fashion etc. now gets SOME flack from my parents, they actually bother her less because they went through it with me! (And Kfashion isnt as wild as Lolita or Viz-Kei) But sis understands and supports me even if she finds j-fashion a little *much* and now we trade clothes a lot Luckily I’m moving out soon and should be able to be more bold in my fashion choices!

    1. Regarding "sweet" booze: Try cocktails (at an actual bar with an actual real bar tender!). My fav one is Cuba Libre. There's literally _sugar_ in it, _and_ coke. Best thing is, when you're the driver or aren't in the mood for alcohol, just get the virgin/alcohol free version of it. 2. I can relate to Whiskers! Not regarding Lolita fashion, but punk stuff. My parents went from "You can't go outside like that!!!" to "Uhm why do you want red hair again, you should try green or blue, that'll be fun!" in a year and a half. At some point they just realized I didn't turn into a day drinker, run away from home, or drop out of school. Just took some time for them to process. When in doubt though... Wait until you can move out and then have a whole load of stress free fun!

As a Jamaican who avoided pursuing lolita fashion throughout my life there, I completely understand where Whiskers is coming from. Anything alternative or unusual is considered "demonic". I've been called demonic for dyeing my hair or painting my face too much. It's a lot. Whiskers, if you see this, Tyler's right. Keep the dress, move out when you can, live your lolita-est life. It's hard to completely cut off a Jamaican family because as a culture, we value familial relationships so much. But if your family can't accept who you are, it's not worth it to stay close to them. What'sApp exists for a reason.

I didn't know there were lolitas on the island, I also didn't know that anyone here know the book I went to a literary inclined school and nobody knew that book, they openly read twilight and fifty shades of grey, no one knows it. Also Jamaican money is equivalent (more or less) to yen, if you have enough to buy a dress when 100 US is a lot of money JUST DO IT!!! Also for the misunderstanding beware of archaic items, to wear whatever you want add bits and pieces into your normal wardrobe and gradually let them see more of it it ends up becoming an "oh that's just how she dresses" after a while, if it looks like a children's church dress bonus points and if you can say you like whimsical dresses and a line cuts whenever the dress is sweet. Also word of advice, take your parents point of view into consideration if ever you go to family events in lolita, personally my mother complains that a majority of unprinted pieces look like slave clothes. If you can find the loopholes in what your parents say you can leave the conversation with them giving in. It makes sense to be aware of how your opinions can affect what they say next, it's not enough to say what it is show them in a way that keeps the sanity introduce with classic, add in that you like black clothes because it's elegant and introduce sweet as being whimsical and because there are cute animals on the dress...( comment back if you'd like some dress examples this post is already too long)

Re Whiskers: I'm not Jamaican (I'm from st Vincent) but to put some back history on this, there's a lot of small mindedness and ignorance back home and if you fall outside the "norm" or if you do anything they deem not "black/Jamaican/etc" lord you get jumped on and accused wanting to be white or Japanese in this case. Whiskers parents/family sound some type of Christian and that on top of the superstitious culture, the ignorance and their hatred of Japan, they're a lost cause. Don't bother trying to educate them. They've already made up their minds and are commensing behind your back. Whiskers, enjoy your trip to Japan and if you do buy clothes there, hide them. If you have to stash your wardrobe at a trusted friend's place, do it. If you have social media, block or limit your family from seeing it if you want to interact or post your outfits online or just outright make a new profile for that. Don't mention the fashion in front of them. If they mention it, just say I'm not interested anymore and move on. Tune them out. Yes it sucks but if you can move out, do so. I hope you're at least adult aged but if you're younger just hang on eh.

I've dealt with this too, they never thought it was a sex thing or a devil thing they looked at it as a costume and didn't like the attention. They fought me over wearing it but we came to a agreement that I will be wearing it and they can't stop me and I just won't wear it when spending time with them, I wear it on my own time and they just ignore it . So I think that's fare. But ya Whiskers family has an issue with word association. They heard the words lolita and goth and blocked out all sense of learning something or being proven wrong. It's a problem I find a lot of old religious people have. Don't even get me started on the 90's and Harry Potter

To Bunny. As a lolita and a bartender. I'd say you have a few options. Cocktails are the first one. There are many cocktails (for example, vodka sunrise, fruit tingle and Toblerone) that are sweet and enjoyable to drink. With the alcohol itself. Mixing vodka with different fruit juice or soft drinks is an option. My personal favourite is midori with lemonade. It's sweet melon flavour makes it taste like a nice cordial. If you really wanna try then you can experiment with alcohol and fruit juice/soft drink and that way your taking the burn off. I drink gentleman Jack, and on its own it burns on the way down but with coke it's pretty smooth. . Sorry for the long explanation. I'm happy to give more advice about drinks to anyone who wants it Love Bartending lolita

From the perspective of a goth: I personally think the devil worship stereotype comes from the goth part of gothic lolita. Devil worship is actually a common stereotype about the goth subculture: we're often aassumed to be Hollywood's idea of a satanist. People like to think we sacrifice a goat every week or something, I dunno. So to me, this doesn't dound like a lolita stereotype, it's a goth one. These narrow-minded folks just ignored the 'lolita' part of 'gothic lolita'. I personally always like to see goth lolita's as a sort of crossover between my own subculture and lolita, if that makes sense? Just like the name implies, they're pretty much both in my eyes. But yeah, narrow-minded people just be narrow-minded, and it sucks like it always does.

She said it was weird and asked if i wouldn't feel like i'm taking too much space wearing that (so rude omg). Some months ago i bought cottagecore dresses and i made the mistake to show my family and got so much criticism that i got dizzy so i wasn't expecting anything good from her but her reaction was so geniuine it hurted so much, she really found it ridiculous even though i loved it. When i will receive the dress i ordered i'll take it and go straight to my room without showing my family... (i know they will try to make me open it in front of them because they are curious but they have always mocked my fashion and think i shouldnt feel reluctant from showing them what i buy even though it's their fault) I've always had problem expression myself so i'm giving up trying to explain to them why i love Lolita, i'm with them only until i go back to my apartment in another city (i came back because of the virus) so i can't wait to go home and wear what i want

For sweet alcoholic drinks, you might like cocktails, I'm not sure what to specifically suggest but there's a lot of nice options there. But also I feel like you just get used to the taste of alcohol, I remember I absolutely hated it at first but over time as I tried different drinks I kinda just got used to it? I still don't like really strong drinks though lol, you have to try different things to know what you like. For Whiskers, my family were quite surprised when I first got in to wearing more 'eye catching' fashion styles (they were already kinda used to it by the time I got in to lolita haha) but with time they just kinda got used to it? My mum still says not so nice things from time to time but I guess you just have to try to not let it get to you too much. They'll probably eventually learn to get over it.

I was think the same. Or Baileys/Drambui or that one that's black on one side and white on the other. Another whiskey based one I think but hella sweet. Not the sort you can guzzle but still enjoyable in small doses.

Old vid but I just found your channel: I think a lot of highly superstitious religious types tend to attribute anything they don't understand or don't like to The Devil. "I don't understand it? Must be of The Devil!" "I don't personally like it? DEFINITELY of The Devil!"

I mean I am pegan and got a "tacky" dress because I love goth and cute things. But in no way shape or form am I a devil worshiper. My dad knew about Lolita fashion before I and was 100% supportive and actually did me the favor of explaining it to my Mom and my own bio mother what the fashion was and represented. My dad is my hugest supporter which to me is awesome.

what's hilarious is that the exact opposite situation happened when i started wearing lolita because before i didn't care about my appearance and wore mostly metal band shirts and jeans and trenchcoats and never brushed my hair or wore makeup and then i started dressing super frilly and femme and my parents were like "thank god youre finally presentable! you look so pretty today! i wish you dressed like this all the time..."

Would you mind if I laser cut you a sign that reads "I am not a professional in any way, except for saying mean things on the internet for money" and mail it to you? Because that is now my favorite quote from you. Btw It was great to see you at Delta again. Too bad it was only for a second. Definitely think about what I said. My folks think I worship the devil cause I dress different too lmao 😂. It sucks. Then they found out I was gay & have been in the process of kicking me from the family fully for the last two years 😂 . Toxic religious people claim devil worship to absolutely everything they don't like, don't understand, or don't care to understand lol. I'm thankful I have caring and supportive friends ❤️.

I do witchcraft (NOT DEVIL WORSHIP) and I wear Lolita and only my mom and brother know about both because if I told the rest of my family they would probably never talk to me again but I’m ok with that because then I don’t have to get dragged into parties with people I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

Kinda scared for Whiskers that their family will destroy the dress if they find it in the closet. People who accuse something as being devil worship are superstitious enough to do that. Also they probably won't be happy about Whiskers spending $200+ on a dress

Meta... I feel so attacked right now 😂 I don’t own any but they are one of my grail brands lmao My grandma still thinks Lolita is ‘bopeep dresses’ I’ll occasionally wear something vintage inspired to family gatherings, that makes her really happy. Funnily enough my mother is perfectly happy with historical wear lol (despite Lolita being the minidress version of like every historical gown lol). Still can’t wait to debut an 18th century Robe a la Francaise at a future family gathering 😂 you gave me that loophole to look like the living embodiment of a cake, Mother! Your fault! Thankfully never had the animosity from most family members because I’m the arty one! Hope Whiskers slow integration of the fashion goes well! (Totally digging the names lol)

Mittens- I think Tyler's advice is really good, but yeah it also really depends on your age. As far as I can see you don't mention that or whether you live with your parents/are financially dependent on them. If you're living with your parents or are dependent on them and can't change that anytime soon, then tbh you should probably put aside wearing lolita for a few years until you're at least not living together anymore. It'll minimize conflict and help you feel better- you can definitely enjoy Japan and buy dresses and consume lolita content, but wearing it regularly might not be possible. If you're not living with your parents- just do lolita on your own time. Go to meetups, cafes, gardens, museums, etc or just wear it around the house. I would avoid wearing it to family events or at your parent's house, so that no one has the opportunity to judge you, but if you are an adult then you have the right to wear whatever you like. Your family doesn't have the right to decide your life for you, and if they love you they'll learn to accept you, or at least to not be mean to you- my mom doesn't like lolita and she thinks I'm weird for wearing it, but if she sees me in it she still says I look cute and she really doesn't comment on it unless I ask her opinion or she sees me in something very OTT. I had an emo phase many years ago that my parents also tolerated even though it looked awful (I was 13) because they love me and they wouldn't want to put me down or make me feel bad. Hopefully you and your parents can reach the same place, or if not, then keep your relationship with your sister strong and find friends who do love and support you no matter what.

Bunny, as far as sweet drinks go, I gotchu: Strawberry daiquiris are delicious, kamikazes (more of a shot, but it's super sweet), midori sours, love potion number 9 (heavily grapefruit juice based, so be careful), Alabama Slammers, S*x with the Bartender (minus the Baileys), Baybreezes, anything with Malibu rum in it, really, Vegas Bomb. Just be careful and try to balance out the drinks with water or a less sweet drink like a Bloody Mary (you can request for it not to be so spicy. i recommend it with lime over lemon) because alcohol and sugar don't mix. It'll hurt your stomach and make you sick. I learned that one the hard way.
