Description:
Measure Names and Measure Values - they seem to be everywhere! In your data pane, appearing magically when building certain graphs and views… But what exactly are they for?
Measure Names and Measure Values are Tableau generated fields that allow us to reference all the measures in our worksheet.
Specifically, Measure Names acts as a dimension, while Measure Values acts as a measure.
But knowing when and why to use one or the other in the Marks Card, as a filter, or as an addition to the Rows or Columns Shelf, can be tricky. We’re going to take a look at that in this week’s video.

This is a very good video, thankyou for the explanation. In the side by side comparison graph, if you didnot have region and only had a bunch of measures (like sales, profit, margin etc). Is there a way to sort these measures by the measure values (instead of the default view which is that the measures appear in the same order as added to the "Measure Values" tray) So if sales had the maximum value, followed by margin, followed by profit, the graph would first show sales, then margin, then profit ( I might have these measures in a different order in the Measure values shelf)

Hi Sujana, you are welcome! You raise a great questions and unfortunately, there's no easy way to do that. Measure Names and Measure Values are typically sorted manually. The only way I can think to do what you are asking is to pivot all the measures in the Data Source, but that would mean you no longer have individual columns for each measure which would probably raise a whole new host of issues.

Great explanation, simple and on point. Hey on side note. Which video editing recorder do you use? I like the anotations, and shapes.

Thank you! This is Eric here responding on Ollie's behalf. I'm not sure which annotation tool he uses since he uses a Mac, but I use Zoomit (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/zoomit) on my PC for similar annotations. Very cool, free tool!
