This film gets a bad reputation, but I think it's one of the most endearing sequels I've ever seen. Instead of repeating the original film, it actually continues the character's journey.

This film was fucking shit, read the book, this film is not in the same spirit whatsoever. It's literally just a bunch of washed-out losers sat around masturbating over their shit memories, with none of the energy, enterprise or scheming of the characters in the book (those characters that they didn't decide to cut from it... where the fuck is Nikki or Juice Terry??) literally a bag of shit that's been set on fire and left in your fridge to poison your food.

I was 24 when Trainspotting came out. 46 when T2 came out. The first one was about being young, ambitious, carefree, full of ourselves, and stupid. T2 is about growing up and finally becoming a man faced with becoming irrelevant in a world that values youth over experience. I actually teared up in the theater a few times viewing T2. It's what I feel about getting older, and what my relationship is towards my younger self. I want a T3 but not for another 15 years. I want a third movie that closes all the story lines and arcs. A trilogy about my generation made over a generation. I'd love that. Only one other possible trilogy would illicit such an emotional response out of me: Clerks III...... I can understand why many Millennials and Gen-Z kids didn't like this movie as much. They simply weren't around in the early-mid '90's. They will inevitably have movies and trilogies of their own. In Renton's updated "Choose Life" speech at the restaurant with Veronika, he wasn't talking to her, he was talking to her generation. It was both a warning, and a criticism...

I'm not sure how these guys are "running out of time" at...45 years old...unless it's in the context of people who don't have their shit together in life, I suppose. But what is that, exactly? That's also what the film wants us to ask.

I was 19 when Trainspotting came out. That soundtrack, mentality, era of music was what I was very into at that time. Now in my early 40s watching the sequel, I too teared up at various parts. Its hard not to relate to the characters aspects in many ways and that "choose life" speech is so fucking on point it hurts.

Bob Star: What I particularly loved about the movie are the various "memory flashes" from the first movie that came on screen for a second or two. Also the club scene. Its two middle aged guys who are completely out of place and out of time surrounded by people they haven't been in 20+ years. Renton is clearly uncomfortable. That's exactly how I felt the last time I let someone drag me to a club. The music is immortal, and the youth dance to it all the same believing they are immortal just like Renton and Simon did when they were young. I actually started to cry at the updated "Choose Life" speech. It's everything I feel about getting older and not exactly getting what I always hoped for. In 15 odd years I want to see a third "Choose Life" speech that illustrates who we will be. I will be 60-65.

A lot of the comments talk about how the kids that don’t like the sequel film just don’t understand the meaning of it yet and things along those lines, but I think the problem is that they do, and they’re scared that they’re living their own Trainspotting, just waiting for T2 to roll around.

Glory days are mostly a retrospective thing. You don't go around thinking 'these are the best days of my life' when you're young. Most of the time you're bored. Life just seems normal to you, everyday stuff, school, meeting friends, etc. It's when you're older, past 30 or whatever, that you look back at your youth and think of those days as the best part of your life. I had mental health issues when I was in my teens and early twenties, I took a lot of drugs, had some horrible experiences but I still miss those days. I'm still friends with the people who were important to me back then but it's different when you're older. When you're young, it's you and your friends against the world, you do everything together, you share almost everything. Nowadays we meet up and share some moments while our daily lives are separate. You'll never get that feeling back and you don't fully realize it until it's gone.

Let's not forget that T2 isn't an adaptation of Porno. It takes some elements from it and Trainspotting, but Boyle said that Porno wasn't that great of a book and was basically inferior to Trainspotting, hence the huge changes from the books sequel to the film. Boyle didn't want a Porno adaptation, he wanted a film of where the characters are 20 years later and trying to recapture their youth in their middle age, as you said in the video. Great video man.

i agree Jared, and hopefully flagged up in the video the significant changes from Welsh's book. i guess that's one of the main points I'm trying to make - Boyle, Hodge & co used Porno as a starting point to then explore their own issues and anxieties about getting older, and, for me, made something so much richer. and glad you liked the video!

T2 takes a lot of stuff from Porno, but it's not really a faithful adaptation of that book, but then neither was Trainspotting either. The Trainspotting novel was very different from the movie, and I don't think a 100% faithful adaptation of that book would have worked for a film.

Trainspotting and T2 are both absolute cinematic greatness. As someone who grew up in Scotland, it has the nostalgic feel that all us Scots have with our teenage years and how growing up it all changes and the way Boyle did it is just amazing. Absolute brilliance, and my absolute favourite films of all time as the run in parallels. Easily the best sequel to a film ever.

I feel like T2 never quite achieved the heights of the original Trainspotting. It's never quite as good. And... I kind of feel like that's the point of the film. Much like the characters, T2 looks back at a glorious past it can never achieve. It's the perfect sequel to Trainspotting in that, it never surpasses Trainspotting, but it knows it and accepts it.

Let’s not forget that we’re talking about a film about heroin addicts (train spotting) a few of the standards of a great film are tension, drama, stakes... when are the stakes higher than life or death? Overdose or rehabilitation. I don’t think it’s never as good, it’s about a different set of men, and I think, (especially in light of the fact that most of the negative reviews were that it was some weird nostalgic pastiche of the first film), that if it had, in some hypothetical universe, come come out as a stand-alone film without the first one’s shadow looming, it would be considered at the very least a Great film, if not its own masterpiece. (Obviously I’m this hypothetical, certain context clues of the first film would have been edited in or out depending on what made sense, but we’re talkin like ten minutes of footage so regardless).

A very well articulated breakdown of the film. When T2 press started to be released, excitement soon gave way to fear, fear that as a person similar in age to the the films protagonists I would go through a similar feeling to watching ‘the worlds end’ a film that filled me with regret and anger at some of my life’s choices. Far from it! T2 gave me hope, that while we all try to hark back to a time when youth was our greatest quality and yet wasted on us, we recklessly disregard it, and as slips away we become like drowning men despairingly trying to hang on to it. It reduced me to tears so many times and nuggets from the original sprinkled across the screen and from the speakers. It essence it was pure cinema indulgence story telling and I left the screen feeling ultimately up lifted, you can’t change the past, it is that which makes you the person you are and will continue to be, but if you learn from it, it allows that person to grow, rather than it define you.

I was 26 when it was released, 48 when T2 came out. I must be the only person who could not watch the whole of the first one - although I loved the music, filming, actors etc I could not watch heroin use like this and as soon as I saw the baby first crawling on the floor I knew what was coming and couldn't watch more. I knew I had to see the second one after I saw the trailer so I finally watched the whole of the first one... and sure enough felt traumatised by it. It did feel gratuitous to me, but yeah, the baby dying scene was so awful. But, the second one blew me away with how beautifully done it was, how mature. I really related being in my later 40's. (And I've known plenty of recovering addicts). Ewen Bremner/Spud just got me completely in this movie. So much more hope. So many great scenes and more great music, and of course the Prodg remix is amazing. I absolutely loved it. I've watched it maybe 6 times, after seeing it in the cinema, and finally bought it so I could see the extras etc. And yeah I even went to Edinburgh when I went to the UK earlier this year...fucking amazing. Thanks so much Danny and all you guys. You completely floored me with this. And I'm not someone who had an amazing relationship with the first one (except for the soundtrack...!)

Then the nostalgic element is reflected in real life as you watch the sequel and look back at your time between the first film and this one. I can’t say as I was less than one year old when the original came out haha.

A great video for a perfect sequel. I came to it late having only seen the original film until after I saw the sequel. However, that didn’t stop me from understanding what they were trying to achieve. It’s the perfect balance of nostalgia, narcissism and moving forward.

I watched the first when I was 14 and before I ever tried drugs. Now many years later and having experienced heroin addiction and recovery, and growing up and making a career and a life, I revisited the original and then watched the sequel. It stuck with me, that whole sarcastic “choose life” thing. Whether you’re happier living fast and soaking up pleasure or living long enough to become a yuppy. Not sure what I was expecting from T2. I guess one movie can’t be expected to have all of life’s answers. But it was cathartic to see. I loved Spud’s story. I think I’d have liked Mark and Sickboy to have turned out differently. Not sure how

I remember when i read Porno back in 06.. i gotta say it wasnt the sequel i was really expecting but it was pretty ok.. watching T2, which came as a huge surprise to me, based on the time gap, i could see some elements boyle took from the book ,but i was so fucking happy it wasnt how Porno went, I mean, it had to be based 20 years later, different subjects had to be brought up.. And it went just how i imagined it should be.. Trainspotting blew my mind in 96 and 20 years later T2 did it again.

Trainspotting is my favorite movie of all time. As an addict in recovery even after years I still feel like I relate to the movie so much. Even though I live in America they really did a great job telling the story of heroin addiction and where it can put you in life and what it can put you through. I’m a huge fan of the second movie. I thought it was great. Reminded me of my friend group, we all got older, got sober but are in our late 20s and early 30s still struggling to find an identity. Struggling to find a way in the real world. It’s very good. So accurate to real life. Irvine welsh is a story telling genius

I was 22 when Trainspotting came out, and it impacted my life like a train wreck. I watched T2 with a group of friends a lot younger than me and they just could not understand my reaction to the film. The scene when Renton confesses Sick Boy his wife had dumped him, lost his job and had no kids, I had recently divorced (no kids either) and was at the lowest point of my career. I felt these bastards were talking directly to me and moking me. When the movie finished I put Born Slippy at full blast and started to dance frantically, laughing and shouting, I was euphoric with the movie. My friends, who are a lot younger, just laughed and let me be. I've been clean and sober for 17 years now...

It's kind of ironic that I saw Trainspotting as a memory of a time that was already gone. We revealed in a glorious death story that was never our own and other than some fake E that no one even recognized anymore the movie had no real association with our lives. Even our younger friends who really knew nothing of Heroin and looked upon the first movie as a portrait of the early 90s and their lives which Trainspotting never really was. I find that as I look back upon these characters I too shed a tear for a time that for me actually was, except all my friends who were on heroin had already died from AIDS in the 80s, but I miss them and I missed these characters. I will have more to say but I want to wait until I have seen T2 more times. I already feel that T2 is one of the best sequels I have ever seen, but I also know that the knot in my throat is one that I have felt more and more. Like I will never see those times again and one day after I have seen T2 more I will write more about it and the feelings I have.

Great analysis! I LOVED Trainspotting when it came out, I think it spoke to A LOT of people, from all walks of life... So when T2 came out, I was both sceptical and excited. I wanted to see if the life of Danny Boyle's "characters" played out the way I had always thought (I wasn't disappointed). I thought it was well written, well acted, and emotionally fulfilling, as someone who's lived life like the characters...but who knows where I'm gonna end up? ;) Quality video, mate. Cheers.

To appreciate what a marvellously clever film T2 was, just put yourself in a position to come up with a story and a character development that is a continuation of the first one but with all the characters 20 years older. Of a movie that is universally adored and loved with people feeling strongly about it. And are sentimentally attached as the experience of watching the first movie coincides with their youth and hey-deys. God ahead. it is daunting.

I fell in love from the first time i saw Trainspotting. Bought the cassette when my local video rental store went out of bussiness. Bought a dvd years later. Bought a special edition from ebay... This was in the years before before the "todays" internet. Not everything was as easy to find. Ive heard rumors that there was going to be a sequel. Was hyped a f, but it "never" came. Many years later found out there IS a sequel, but in written form. Even tho im not a book guy, ive read the book. First the Trainspotting. Was suprised how it was different from the movie. How much more world/character building was in it. After reading it, understood why it got best adapted screenplay award. The book was awesome. Then ive read the Porno. Loved it too. It was a great continuation. Now. T2. When i saw the first trailer, i cant describe how happy i was. It was happening. It was really happening. Cant remember if i was ever as happy about seing a movie, as i was for it. Before i watched it, i rewatched the original, for about 1000th time Just in case. ;) So when the T2 started with all those nostalgia trips.... Dunno, i wont say its a bad film. Its just not for fans. tl/dr I rewatched Trainspotting so many times, and il rewatch it many more times. I saw T2 once, and will never watch it again. Ill rather read Porno.

This film was offensively awful, it completely missed the mark, watered down the source material of the book "Porno" so much that this film didn't even have a plot. They turned Begbie, an actually quite complex character down into nothing but a Golum/Frankenstein's monster. It was a wet fart of nostalgia crap trying to appeal to 40 - 50 year old Facebook wankers whilst taking the bare minimum from the source material into it's plot, the book Porno, and the two books that follow that "The Blade Artist" and "Dead Man's Trowsers" perfectly wrap up the story of Trainspotting, Spud dies, Mark and Begbie become friends. They should have made this film 15 years earlier and done it as an adaption of the book it's apparently mean't to be a dramatisation of and not this dog shit.
