I can 100% picture Whitesnake doing this song. I'm not being snarky about it either. I've just noticed that when guys don't recognize power ballads that are sung by women, you give them the male band that would have done the same song and they go "Oh. Yeah." I've used this method often with 80s Cher songs.

@@wangtang7768 I saw them mentioned in another comment, but didn’t check it out until now. Interesting that someone else did it first, but unlike everyone whose comments I read under ITens version, I think Heart’s was much better. Theirs seemed kind of muted and boring. Heart brings a lot more power and passion to their version. I’ll stick with Heart on this one.

Wow. T is a tough cookie! I'm a man that absolutely loves this song! Ann's voice is one of, if not the best, in rock history! And even though she is dynamic in the early part of the song, when she emits that from-the-depths-of-the-soul wail "Alooooone" during the first instrumental break... she kicks it into total overdrive. I can not listen to this song without that moment giving me chills!

I hope they do -- the videos I've seen from their shows so far sound like Ann is really struggling. I've seen them so many times that I might be expecting too much, but Ann's been struggling on the older Heart songs since 2016, she tries to sing them in the original key but she doesn't have the high range anymore. She's still phenomenal, but I wish she'd quit trying to sing Crazy on You and other songs in their original key. She's the GOAT female hard rock singer and I'm afraid she's going to damage her legacy.

@@k.wilkie3814 I agree with you to an extent. Except, I would be a little more harsh towards describing Ann's recent live singing abilities. The last 5 years, or so, have not been very kind to Ann. But, hell! The woman is 73 years old! Aging takes it's toll on everyone. At 62, she delivered the greatest performance of Stairway To Heaven in history. Does her recent vocal issues change my opinion of her? Not in the slightest! As far as I'm concerned, she's still the greatest female rock singer of all time. But, I'd strongly caution people going to their concert to lower their expectations.

Quintessential especially, mid- late 80s into early 90s. Very Commercialized then vs the 70s. Like movie studios of old who molded many aspects of the groups to styles they utilize for acts and videos. The high reverb sound to recordings. Still no autotune or pitch correction a good thing. Still a iconic decade for music and so many genres mixing and experimenting despite it all. Acts could still arise in small radio markets getting airplay and discovered before national markets begin in the mid-90s to totally now. Now a elite group basically chooses what to promote and that becomes what we hear most.

That is a power ballad by definition: Hard rock band with a ballad that starts out slow and explodes in the chorus. Power ballads by nature are geared more toward women than men which is why they get released as singles (or did back in those days). Heart's core sound is hard rock with acoustic at the center and this song isn't representative of their sound. "Magic Man", "Crazy on You", "Barracuda", "Even it Up", "Heartless", "Mistral Wind", "If LooksCould Kill" "Bad Animals""Wild Child", "The Night", "Black on Black" are all more representative of their sound than the power ballads that got released as singles in the 80s and 90s

I agree with T, it's a relatively simple power ballad. Also get where Tasha is coming from, it's also a powerful message/story. Women and men feel this way as well, in not-yet, hopeful and even permanent relationships that have gotten sidetracked by the likes of work and family.

T, are you aware of how so many bands reinvented themselves in the 80's to remain relevant? Heart is a great example of this. 2 others that very obviously come to mind are The Doobie Brothers and ZZ Top. In almost every case I preferred the 70's sound but also in every case I still liked the 80's edition; just not as much. That is exactly what you detected here and I agree with you. I might like this song a little more than you do but only because Ann's vocals are so impressive. Watch some more of their early work; I'll bet you'll like that a lot more.

The problem in the 80s is that Capitol would only release power ballads as singles save for an occasional pop-rock song like Who WIll You Run To. There was still some great hard rock (i.e. the title cut from Bad Animals, The Wolf, Shell Shock,The Night ,Wild Child, Black on Black, etc) but Capitol rarely sent them to radio so all we heard was These Dreams/Alone type stuff.
