Tōru Takemitsu - Equinox - David Antigüedad, guitar [w/ score]

Equinox (1993) is Tōru Takemitsu’s penultimate piece for solo guitar dedicated to Kiyoshi Shomura and premiered by him in Tokyo on 4th April, 1994.
Taking the title and inspiration from Joan Miro’s namesake painting, Takemitsu captures an enormous yet delicate universe of impressionistic sounds in a small-format piece, in which every gesture and every resonance bear crucial importance within the overall structure. Incidentally, it is worth mentioning that Takemitsu evokes Johann Sebastian Bach, whom he deeply admired, by using the musical quote that relates sounds to the composer’s acronym (known as the B A C H motif), something he had already done in Folios (1974). It does not go without saying that his homage is two-fold, considering Bach was born in the 1685 spring equinox.

----------------------------

Takemitsu wrote some of the darkest music I have ever heard, early in his career especially. Takemitsu had a dark shadow following his music for awhile and it’s beautiful

@@davidantiguedadclassicalgu4259 If I remember correctly he took private lessons in the 1960s to play biwa or shamisen or something similar. Either way, he had an intricate and deep understanding of the instrument from a practical as well as artistic standpoint.

I hear a huge influence by the 5 Bagatelles, by William Walton in that first movement. Sounds like the melody was lifted right out of the 5th bagatelle.

Thank you very much, Roberto! I’m glad you like it. If you look closely, and based on the music, the last A is not tied and has to be played :)

There’s two slurs that are definitely confusing (for me too, at the beginning): one is the slur that ties two b-flat and the other is for the l.v. (let vibrate) of that same b-flat

It is true that one could argue that, based on the recurring motif A F# B-flat, the A should be a resonance, but I like the effect of the final A giving the minor resolution to the chord ;)

This may be one of the most difficult pieces to play, let alone master. However, where's the music? At what point does a piece become solely fingering gymnastic and nothing more?
