It is indeed very challenging to choose biwa and shakuhachi as soloists facing the immense power of a modern orchestra. This challenge here is wonderfully met. Autumn is a masterwork. ❤❤❤❤❤

10:30- 11:30 is probably my favorite moment of this piece. I especially love the muted trumpets at 10:58 and that chord at 11:09 . Honestly this whole thing is a masterpiece, but those are my favorite moments. It always blows my mind that Takemitsu was largely self-taught as a composer, and yet he was able to achieve such a high level of artistry, really inspiring.

Truly astonishing and successful amalgam of two such different sound worlds. Takemitsu has somehow made the Japanese instruments and the Western orchestra act as a foundation for each other. Fascinating concept in that form, as I perceive it, is defined by the apparent but deceiving formlessness of the composition. This is quite a beautiful experience for me, and I thank you for posting it.

The biwa player’s last name is Kubota, instead of Kubato that is mistaken on the video.

Biwa and Shakuhachi individually sound like ancient instruments, and not necessarily in ensemble with orchestral part.
