Guitars:
1864 Antonio de Torres "FE 17" SP/MP (ex Francisco Tárrega, Maria Luisa Anido) - www.guitarsalon.com/product/a...
1936 Ignacio Fleta SP/MP - www.guitarsalon.com/product/1...
Here's Scott Tennant and Bill Kanengiser from the Grammy Award Winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, discussing their performance of Mark Small's arrangement of "Silent Night" by Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863), as well as the histories behind the two instruments they're playing on - Bill is playing on the first of the three Antonio de Torres guitars owned by Francisco Tárrega - this one known as FE 17, built in 1864. Scott is playing on a 1936 Ignacio Fleta guitar which was built as a structural copy of FE 17 while Fleta had the original Torres in his workshop for repair work. Recorded at the Guitar Salon International showroom in Santa Monica, CA.

While it is definitely inspired by Torres, I think it's inaccurate to say the '36 Fleta is a copy of this Torres. Doesn't this Fleta have 5 braces while FE17 has 7...and in a different arrangement? So different aesthetics, different bracing, while sharing similar proportions. Not to mention, Brune, who as you know once owned this '36 Fleta, once denied that Ignacio Fleta had ever had FE17 "on the work bench." Indeed, he called such a claim entirely spurious. And let's not even get into what has been done to FE17 itself.

Excellent history, thanks for this 👏! I hope GSI can do more review videos on the actual guitars in the future, like some other guitar shops do. I definitely enjoy the performances, but I'd also like to know about the woods, construction, luthier, etc. and hear some example pieces played so I know what it might sound like were I to buy it myself.

Time and use are enormous factors for delicate acoustic instruments. I'm betting that many of those modern attempts at the Torres will sound spot-on in another 100 years. (Assuming they receive the reverent care that any guitar built by Torres and played by Tarrega will have received...) It would be interesting to see a current maker's attempts using torrified and regular woods, side by side.
