Guitar Salon International

Guitar Salon International

Founded in 1983, Guitar Salon International (GSI) is the world’s largest dealer of concert-level classical and flamenco guitars. For over 35 years now, we serve players, collectors and aficionados by offering the best hand-built instruments of leading young guitar makers as well as those of established historical masters. In this process, we acquire and sell many of the most desirable instruments in history, and we subsequently help to assemble important private collections. With the involvement of top concert artists (including Pepe Romero, Scott Tennant, Marc Teicholz, Andrew York and others), GSI showcases several exceptional guitars through audio, video, studio-CD and live concert recordings.

Guitar Salon International established the GSI Foundation in 2011 after receiving public donations aimed at community development. The Foundation’s mission is to help develop the local community by raising money to support music education in public schools.

The story on the piece is interesting: Stromness is a fishing village in the south of Scotland. Uranium deposits were found in the area nd a company was going to setup a mine to extract that uranium. The people in the are were concerned that this would destroy the landscape and the area so they started a protest. The composer Maxwell Davies was inspired to compose a suite (for piano). This movement - "Farewell to Stromness" - is supposed to evoce the image of people leaving Stromness not knowing whether they will ever return ... so the solemn tone and the 'walking cadence' on the D-string. In real life, the people never had to leave, they won their case and the mine was never constructed.
