T. rex as you've never seen it before

Ғылым және технология

The American Museum of Natural History unveils an exhibit called "T. rex: The Ultimate Predator." You'll see how the dinosaur evolved from a tiny, fluffy thing into a giant beast. The museum says this is the most accurate depiction of T. rex ever created.

Dino Bomb Cake No, it’s not. It gets so many thins right, the immobile tongue, the lack of lips (recent research reveled this) and many other details. The only mistake is that we now know that Tyrannosaurus was most likely completely featherless as an adult, but that doesn’t mean the model isn’t great.

The amount of feathers on T. rex is still kind of up in the air. Though we do know that it was at least partially scaly (skin impressions from part of the neck, flanks, and tail). But the main problem with the life models I see here is the lack of flesh on the skulls and arms. And there's also the issue of immobile lips that covered the teeth. They likely wouldn't have toothy grins.

Well T.rex whent thought quite some changes in it's growth. When it was still in it's very first stages it possesed propotionally very big legs(compared to it's adult counterpart). This was likely due to T.rex covering a different niche when it was younger and needed to be fast for that. But as it started to get older it started to grow inmensely(Hutchinson et al. 2011). It depeloped a way more robust and broad build, the ribcage more rotund, but most imprtantly the hindlimbs went from cursorial (slender, with very long metatarsals and tibiotarsus compared to the femora)to more graviportal (with very robust, hypertrophied femora larger than the tibiae, and robust metatarsals). (not me who wrote this last part of the first graph) This would have changed it's life style drasticly, it was meassured to "only" be capable or running at around 17,2 mp/h(sellers et al 2017) at adult stages, this test was meassure on Stan which is not the largest adult but quite possibly around the average mark. It was not the speed moster it was before, now it's a 7+ tonne predator with brute force wanting to eat whatever it can(this includes eating carion). It was the top predator only needing to fear it's own kind. But this doesn't necessarily mean that there wasn't any competition, multiple bite marks have been found of the skull suggesting they would have fought eachother from time to time over whatnot. This is how far my knowldege goes about this subject, I hope it helped.

You mean, composite T-rex with Gorgosaurus, Tarbosaurus, and all other late tyrannosaurs mashed together was found to have no feathers. Most dinosaurs are recreated by composite of different species like Spinosaurus being composite of other Spinosaurs like Baryonyx and Suchomimus. It's like taking skin impressions of a chimp, gibbon, and baboon and concluding that humans were definitely covered 100% in hair/fur. These animals were all tyrannosaurs, but they weren't all that closely related. A tyrannosaur living in warmer regions is less likely to have feathers, while one in a colder region is more likely to have them; but they all probably had something akin to fur on an elephant. Tyrannosaurus rex was likely no more featherless than a human is hairless; meaning small vestigial tuffs of quill like feathers poking out, but not really doing anything.

@@Hornet_Legion I agree that "beyond a shadow of a doubt" is not really possible without genetic evidence, which obviously we don't have. However there is other clues, like anatomy, or fossils of large & small animal being found together repeatedly. It's like being a forensic detective at the scene of a 65 million year old crime scene, so I think that the best a paleontologist can ever say is, these two animals are probably the same species.

@@pastlife960 yes. To a degree an educated guess which isnt enough to be putting something into application to show people what you made an educated guess it might look like. At one time educated guesses had mammoths with downward pointing tusks and t rexs that stood erect. Than you go to guesses that trex could run 35 miles per hour. Now the estimated speed is more like 10 mph. One tune they made the trex out to be very agile, now they believe his left -right rotational speed may have been less than a modern elephant. That he weighed over 40 tons, now they guess it is more like 20 tons more or less by 5 tons. What that tells me is that in the future educated guesses made today will change tommorrow. Probably drastically.

Not only that, but T-Rex and most similar terrestrial dinosaurs didn't have their teeth exposed when the mouth was closed, even opened. They were covered in a lip similar to pretty much all terrestrial reptiles, mammals etc. Without that, the enamel would be damaged from lack of moisture. The few species that can get away with that are creatures that spend a lot of time in the water, like crocodiles.

The fact still stands that T-rex belongs to a family of dinosaurs (Coelosuaria) that is known to have feathers; while it's unlikely that an adult T-rex needed feathers for insulation, it's perfectly reasonable to assume they possessed feathers on their tail, back and head for display purposes.
