I’m Australian. The news was on the radio as I was waking up the morning after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. My first thought was “I must have heard that wrong.” Thirty five men, women and children were gunned down by a single shooter with a semi-automatic rifle. That was our last mass shooting because our prime minister had the courage push through new laws banning automatic weapons despite very vocal opposition from the gun lobby.

That's because Australia is a beautiful and rational country where people tend to actually care about their fellow citizens. We did similar over here in the UK after Dunblane. This is the USA we're talking about, sadly for millions of them, they prioritise their individual right to own guns over the right of other human beings including children to LIVE. Shame on the USA.

🖖! Heavily sad & embarrassed American here. I salute your Prime Minister from 1996, for his/her actions post that particular mass shooting. He got effective legislation passed, in spite of what was probably massive protest by powerful politicians/corporations & various idiots. I wish that America had Leaders like that. You know, that knew their job & actually did it. Not just some schlub from the Millionaire/Billionaire class, trying to fleece residents of their life savings. Thanks for sharing this… PS. I don’t own a gun. Anymore. I was able to illegally buy one off of the street in 1980, for $50.00. I never intended to actually use the evil thing, just as a visual deterrent. And I got ripped off, it & my car disappeared a few days later, one night. I eventually got my car back. I never laid a hand on another gun since then.

*ITS ACTUALLY VERY DIFFICULT* to explain to an American *HOW CRAZY* you look to the rest of the world when it comes to guns. Imagine if almost every European kept a 1000lb Bull in their living room, and every single day bulls accidentally killed our kids. And some kids took the bull to school and it killed and tramples 5 ot 10 kids. And other took the bull to a church and it killed 20 people. And each year 30,000 were killed by bulls. BUT 30% of the population almost literally got a hard-on over bulls!!! >>> They LOVED bulls and took their bull everywhere, even though it terrified other people. And no matter how many people the bulls killed, it was in our CONSTITUTION that we could keep a tell trained cow for milk. But the right-wing nut jobs insisted that a 1000lb psychotic bull was the same as a well-trained cow for milk. so we just accepted our children being killed by bulls cos there is nothing we can do to stop it.

@@tomk4t Yeah definitely the fault of the school building. Not the ease with which he was able to get the weapon, never ever that. I mean it’s a really really dangerous country with all those guns so of course children should be kept safe in buildings designed like fortresses. Guns after all are a natural phenomenon so it’s not like anything could be done about them. In fact it’s probably worth pointing out that none of those children were wearing body armour while at school, so that’s another failure of the system right there isn’t it. As a Canadian watching the US, I'm aghast at the pure barbarism of the conservative and extreme right. What civilized country agrees that gun regulation is too high a price to pay in exchange for the lives of children? It is debased and totally unconscionable that the priorities of a deranged teenager with murderous intent are placed above the safety of second graders, the elderly, and peaceful citizens. We have murder in Canada, we have gun violence, and we have witnessed unspeakable mass shootings before, but every time some premeditated terror attack occurs, there are significant consequences and restrictions put in place to prevent a reoccurrence. We don't brush it off and say, "it's not guns, it's mental health/ it's poverty/ it's drug dependence/ it's a few bad apples". It's not addressing the fact that as of 2021, there are more guns circulating in America than ever before (120+ to every 100 people). It's not addressing the fact that domestic abusers are still able to LEGALLY obtain and possess a firearm. It's not addressing the fact that a three day waiting period for a background check isn't enough due to strained resources for the number of examiners. It's not addressing the fact that white supremacy in America has been going completely unchecked for decades, and they are actively mobilizing against innocent and vulnerable people. All I can do as an outsider is point out the list of problems, and offer you what our solutions have been just north of the border, but I will be decried as some Commie Marxist Pacifist by everyone who prizes a deadly weapon over the preservation of lives. It stems from the very ingrained American characteristic of a innate distrust and disdain for central government, something a lot of Western countries do not share with you. We believe in a social responsibility for one another, not by any show of force, but through civil institutions and an affinity for one's community and locality. We just went through one of the most violent and damaging storms in Ontario that knocked out power to almost half a million people across the province. I didn't hear about lawlessness, and looters and people fighting at gas pumps. I witnessed neighbors stringing extension cords across roads to supply power to households in the dark from their own generator. I saw kids outside moving brush and debris and collecting branches off the sidewalks. I saw people sharing food, hot water, and what little electricity they had while we waited days for the hydro crews to clear fallen trees and powerlines. My internet came back on yesterday and this shooting in Uvalde was the first thing I saw, and it was monstrous to me that the state made no move to make that devastated community of parents, teachers, and students feel safe and secure. Your neighbors should not be your enemies and your children should not be in fear of going to class. Stop placating these extremists by giving them exactly what they want - control! The way to do that is to stop electing representatives that offer them safe harbor and unfettered access to weapons of mass homicide. Don't let these kids and their families become just another statistical nightmare. Don't let those communities in Buffalo go unnoticed, or the victims of the Taiwanese church be forgotten. American gun culture is the most inhumane and disturbing practice. Those so-called "law-abiding good gun owners" aren't being more forceful or vocal about the practical and effective changes that must be enacted NOW in order to prevent such terror acts from happening again. The country is being held hostage by a handful of political extremists with no compassion for human life. There are so few opportunities to make them go away, and you have to take advantage of every one of them to get them out of power and control. All the chickens are coming home to roost for the Republican Party these last few weeks, painting a very grim picture of the state of the United States, and the very dangerous backslide that still awaits everyone if they regain a political majority. Everything is at stake, so vote accordingly, and petition for causes that will force their hand to act. You shouldn't have to put up with these massacres or the ensuing bullshit they projectile over everyone as they shy away from the discussion of gun legislation. If you want it, you've got to make it happen. Your lives are on the line, and they don't care, so find someone who does.

I'm Scottish. I was 13 when the Dunblane Primary school massacre happened in 1996. It was the first time I ever saw my dad cry, & Stephen really got me choked up as he collected himself at the beginning here. There was no debate here either. Everyone was horrified & laws were changed unanimously. Guns can be kept with permits by hunters, or on hunting reserves, or with a licence, kept at a gun club for shooting/ target practice; signed in & out. School uniforms were more strictly enforced afterwards too, & any visitors to schools had to sign in & enter through only one entrance. I don't remember how long it took to create new laws, but those practical things (that directly affected me at that age) changed immediately. I believe laws were very quickly changed. And NOBODY OBJECTED. Everyone was horrified. Everyone supported it never happening again, and thankfully all measures have been effective. I know Australia acted similarly. A few years later when I was about 18, I read a novel based on Columbine. Over 20 years ago. It is shameful US politicians cannot even unite over the lives of children. (And horrifically, sadly ironic, given other news.)

Seprately, there is a article in, I believe The Atlantic, written by a radiographic who treated victims in Parkland, FL after the school massacre there. They compare a standard bullet wound - with an entrance & exit wound, creating a straight line through whichever part of the body was hit - with (semi) automatic weapon damage. The details are horrific. It's explained using basic wave theory from physics & the energy dispersed at such speed. It does not create a clean wound, or clean line through the body. It is described as barbaric to use them for hunting. I'd say 'even hunting', but I do not understand anyone who want to kill another living creature, but it makes them unspeakably horrific in terms of the damage they cause in the body. (And even although I oppose hunting, if one is doing it as a sport, it should be a clean, on target shot - not something from a weapon designed to cause maximum suffering.) It makes me quite sick that someone conceived of such a weapon. There is no need for their existence in this world. Despite that gruesome info, the article in The Atlantic is worth reading. It should be obligatory. Read aloud in Congress. People should understand - it needs to be more than an abstract conversation. It needs something different to make people pay attention, as horrible as it is.

There is a wiki page for it, so try and find it. IT IS NOT 1.5 MASS SHOOTINGS A DAY, like in the USA! Found it? IT IS TWO! One in 2011 with 7 people death and 17 wounded. And one in 2019 with three people killed and seven injured. That last one would not even register as a mass shooting in the USA, where the threshold is 4 killed. And the first one was caused by a mistake made by the police. They didn’t follow the proper procedures when issuing a gun license to the shooter. While he had a recent mental illness history. Gun regulations do work, especially if they are properly controlled.

The real issue is that it's not enough to just express that unless it's followed up with tangible actual policies that'd help stem the gun violence tide. It's going to take more than prayers to get that answer.

It’s appalling how normalised mass shootings, even those involving the deaths of many young children, have become in the US. I can’t imagine a comedy show like this even being broadcast in my country (Scotland/the UK) on the same day as 19 children and two teachers were massacred because it’d be deemed massively inappropriate. In the US it’s just business as usual. We had one mass school shooting back in the 90s when a man in Dunblane, Scotland walked into a Primary School and shot 16 five/six-year-olds and their teacher dead. That was enough for the private ownership of handguns to be banned in the UK and I can’t remember anyone even objecting. The horror of small children being shot like fish in a barrel was too much. To the rest of the world America seems almost blasé about it now. I’m genuinely shocked so little of Stephen’s monologue was about what had just happened in Texas. It isn’t even referenced in this video’s title. When even left-leaning shows are able to move on so quickly you have to wonder if there is any hope left for the US at all.

  • @stephaniegreenwood4007

I felt the same way, it seemed like he just used the mass shooting as a way to transition into the rest of his pre-written jokes. I was very disappointed. In the past I have turn to Stephen Colbert as a voice of reason and sanity, during tumultuous times. But this felt like he said just enough to not seem inhuman and then moved onto business as usual.

@@stephaniegreenwood4007 Agreed, Stephanie. It felt perfunctory, especially when viewed alongside, say, Joe Biden’s speech - though I of course appreciate they served very different purposes and Stephen ain’t the President! However Stephen’s monologues following such atrocities in the past have shivered with an anger and outrage that was missing here, and the segment slid into jokes too quickly and easily for my taste. Not that I blame Stephen; it must be exhausting dealing with the same horrors on air over and over again. Perhaps he simply didn’t have time to prepare anything more damning.
