I'm on that email list and the emails asking for donations were INCESSANT. Often multiple times a day. My favorite part of them was saying that your donation would be matched - up to 1,000 percent - but it never said by whom. Their new tactic is asking you to do a task - fill out a survey, sign his birthday card, etc. - but you can't submit it without giving them money.

Interesting variation on the old Hari Krishna "give a trinket, ask for donation, get a bigger one" psychological trick. This one exploits the "sunk cost" fallacy or the "gambler's" fallacy, that being the tendency to want to continue to do something, even though it's a bad idea, because you don't want to "waste" the effort you've already put into it. So gamblers chase their losses and lose more, people in abusive relationships keep going back without any significant change because "they have history" (lots of other factors at work in those situations, too), and 45 gets you to pay some bucks to submit that survey you just spent time filling out. The trick is remembering that past bad decisions can't be undone by continuing to make the same bad decision. Whatever you put into a bad-faith situation is already gone, and you're never getting it back. Grieve, move on.

I worked at a bank and when Trump lost then he started this donation crap. So many customers who donated kept getting charged every three days. They were scammed and thought it would be a one time donation. By the end of week they were scammed for about 200 dollars. They tried to cancel the reoccurring charges but they were so trusting of trump they gave their direct debt account information. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I once argued with a trumper about how their money was being taken from them and just used for trumps personal benefit. THey just laughed, and said that was perfectly fine with them. They were GLAD that upset me! I asked if they were okay that it was being wasted. They said that as long as I was mad, It wasn't going to waste. I said I'm not mad, it just seemed like... And he got out his phone, looked up trump's site, and proceeded to donate another 100 bucks right in front of me. All I could do was just walk away. With him yelling after me.

The DOJ doesn't need referrals from the Congressional committee to prosecute anyone. I wish Stephen had explained that, so people would understand that no referrals doesn't mean no jail time. Beau of the Fifth Column has an excellent video that talks about this and why the committee might choose not to make referrals. Go check it out.

Just bear in mind, everyone, that the DOJ doesn't need referrals from the Jan 6 committee to prosecute. So even if the committee chooses not to make referrals (which would be a political decision), that doesn't mean no indictments or jail time for those involved in the insurrection. I really wish Stephen had explained that in his monologue.

That's a real bummer for the video team, regardless of what the real story may be. If the team really was unable to meet the deadlines, then they probably aren't going to have jobs after this. I've spent MANY all-nighters creating video content for conference and event deadlines, and I never once had a client postpone things because I couldn't get the job done. I mean, it's "the show must go on", not "the show must go on... unless you need more time, in which case we'll just postpone things." This situation highlights the state of campaign finance in the US - it’s disgusting. It appears about the only avenue that there is to punish anyone for this egregious behavior is a consumer fraud suit. We can only hope that some of those who had their bank accounts drained by dishonest practices will step up and sue.

It's beyond disgusting. Campaign finance reform is one of the few truly nonpartisan issues the country still has: something like 80% of Americans hate it, and having their entertainment interrupted nonstop by political ads every friggin' August-October... but ~mysteriously~ nobody in Congress wants to write a bill to get rid of it. We've even had congresspeople voted in specifically to deal with that issue but within a few months they, again ~mysteriously~ change their minds on the subject!

Bro this is legit. I used to work customer service for credit card company and during the election period, we'd get so many calls from people complaining they don't have any more money or why their cards would get decline. Then checking the transactions, you'd see them charged daily for $25-$50, sometimes more than once a day. It totally sucks. Btw, don't really know what happens after people start disputing these charges. I worked for an entirely different part of the company but would listen to some of these conversations as part of my job.

While I do agree with you in principle, I would like to remind you that if Trump wasn't a imbecile and a grifter, then he likely would have succeded in overthrowing the election and turned USA into an autocracy. With the support of those people you feel sad for. I used to get the mailers from the 45 campaign (until my super special Diamond membership was revoked after I asked for 8 tickets to a rally and forgot to show up). Three times a day, they'd email asking for money and in small print at the bottom were the words "not associated with any political action committee or political purpose," or something of the like. It was on every single email. If they donated, they deserve the grift.
