Systems Thinking 101 | Anna Justice | TEDxFurmanU
Understanding the mechanisms of global systems like fast fashion and industrial agriculture does not need to be difficult. Anna Justice hopes to break down how we think about these systems by demonstrating how inputs and outputs are linked together. From there, she hopes to show how we can apply this concept to systems in our own lives and live more sustainably. Anna is a recent graduate of Furman University majoring in sustainability sciences. During her undergrad career, she chose to advocate for Sustainable Consumption and Production as outlined in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals for a semester-long grant project. She was also a fellow at Furman's leadership institute and presented programming about campus food sustainability. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Systems can be classified as "open" systems or "feedback" systems. An open system is one characterized by outputs that respond to inputs but where the outputs are isolated from and have no influence on the inputs. An open system is not aware of its own performance. In an open system, past action does not control future action. An open system does not observe and react to its own performance. An automobile is an open system which by itself is not governed by where it has gone in the past nor does it have a goal of where to go in the future. A watch, taken by itself, does not observe its own inaccuracy and adjust itself--it is an open system. A feedback system, which is sometimes called a "closed" system, is influenced by its own past behavior. A feedback system has a closed loop structure that brings results from past action of the system back to control future action. One class of feedback system--negative feedback--seeks a goal and responds as a consequence of failing to achieve the goal. A second class of feedback system-positive feedback--generates growth processes wherein action builds a result that generates still greater action. (PRINCIPLES OF SYSTEMS 1968 by Jay W. Forrester )
How about implementing a systems thinking curriculum into the public schooling system that has been broken down into subjects and is creating knowledge conformity? Project-based learning is an approach where students gravitate to knowledge development aligned to their interests and talents. When projects are focused on local community issues the youth-expert dialogue creates new systems thinking approaches and cultivates solid community building where youth are fully engaged to be a voice of their future!

To not see the wood for the trees.
The assumption is that if you flow through the method, you will find the answer. How can you prove the answer is right or wrong? What is your argument that systems thinking mythology will produce something meaningful outcomes? Is that you think the methodology is useful or someone who invented it and you took it as it is?
