I spent five years in the hospital as a child with a chronic life threatening disease. The Make a wish foundation offered me a dream come true trip wherever I wanted. While I was fighting for my life everyone one I knew moved on. They all focused on their future, dreams and happiness. I made new friendships with other kids spending their last days in that place. I would walk in circles around the hematology floor and see them in their rooms. Over time, each room would be vacant, sanitized and given to the next poor soul. When I finally left, I told myself that I needed to see the world for them. This song simply embodies everything I feel. I miss you guys.

This became a tradition to come to this song on my birthday. Yet again I'm here. But twist. I am no longer unhappy and lonely. I'm actually happy and willing to celebrate my birthday this time. Not even the slightest of suicidal. Proud of myself. Jan 26, 2020 Edit: thank you all for saying happy birthday to me. It means alot to me, especially since i am continuing to fight through the pain with this bipolar depression, and I wish everyone the best on their fight against their everyday demons. Edit: Feb 11, 2023, I haven't came to this song in about 3 years. I had did a lot of soul searching. I've found a passion in writing and I'm almost finished in college. Loneliness still creeps up and depression comes and goes but I don't let it defeat me. I cry and feel the feels and just move on. I'm in a better place mentally and this is without medication. Haven't took medication since 2015, the work was all on my own. Proud of me. And thanks to all who wished me a happy bday and came back to this day every year to do so. I am truly grateful to touch people hearts and inspired others to not give up. This world is truly Lonely but knowing that someone is feeling the same way as you, can make you feel less lonely. I send love to you all. Hope everyone is thriving and happy. ❤️

My dad used to put soad songs on the radio when we were travelling and definetely Lonely Day always was the one that I most enjoyed even not knowing the lyrics (I'm brazillian). Growing up and learning a little bit of english, I searched for the lonely day lyrics and I felt in love with all the felling put in this song, the guitar, the bass, Daron's incredible voice... Im at stage four disease in my late 20's and my boyfriend played this song for me and sang along to this,it broke my heart knowing that this is how he feels and not being able to do anything to help me stay and not die but im glad he found something this relatable so he doesn't feel alone.

i went through school with two learning disabilities my parents refused to let me get diagnosed, and i had no friends due to my struggles with social skills and it didn’t help that i was viewed as an idiot. i was always the “dumb kid” and teachers were ruthless when it came to humiliating me. other kids would always join in too, and i felt like an absolute outcast. eventually, my parents gave up on trying to teach me anything because i couldn’t understand and focused more on my brother who at the time had just got accepted into a really prestigious high class school. i was left basically alone for most of my childhood after that. i managed to make it out of such a dark point of my life thankfully, but those days still haunt me, and every time i hear this song i can’t help but be reminded of how things were back then. it’s hard to think about, but i love this song so much because it helps me feel understood.

I recently experienced therapy for a year and a half and Loneliness is also a gift. This song has helped see things from both spectrums. Im content now. Been an SOAD fan since i was 9 years old. im 34 now

I'm not an expert, i'm not a pychologist, and i could be wrong, but since System Of A Down is open to all interpretations, and they themselves said that we could interpretate their songs the way we wish, here is what i think... I've had millions of days like these, i used to be a very loneley guy, and i know that activities such as Drawing, listening to music or playing chess, can be entertaining but... That doesn't fill that hole you still feel, that need that you just can't figure out what it is. For me, fire represents your own desperation, only you can see it, only you wish your neighboor opens his front door, comes out and says "Hello" Only you wish some kids decide to come out and play. Only you wish pepole had a reason to be out, like they used to be other days when you didn't wish for it or even wished the opposite. Fire is the representation of that feeling of loneleyness that no one cares about, and there is nothing anyone can do to put the fire down... It's just you and your loneleyness...the fire that only you can see.....that only you care about...

OutOfRehab Oh, i didn't know that... Well, now that makes sense, i guess that feeling he had in the moment, still leaved some scars, and i know what it feels like to be close to death, the difference is that everyone survived and it was water... To resume the story, me and my family where at the beach, we decided to go deeper into the water, but there was a red flag, we ignored it, and we where standing at the border of the sand, recieving the waves... Without knowing it, the waves where slowly carrying us away from the land, and at some point, we couldn't reach any land to stand on, then we realized that the waves where too strong to make it back, so while the rescuer was on his way, i experienced how it was to see your entire life, before your eyes... This of course was not helped by the fact that to this day, i can't swim... So, then the rescuer made it to us with some life savers, and took us back to the beach... Everything else was back to normal the rest of the trip, but i couldn't help but seeing it everywhere... And thinking what would happen if only i survived?, if only i died, what would happen if nobody survived? And i think that part of "And if you go, i wanna go with you, and if you die, i wanna die with you... Take your hand and walk away..." Expresses what i would feel if only i survived from that, i would have suicidal thoughts probably, but if i recover, it would be a scar that only made me stronger, just to realize that i want to live anyway... "It's a day that i'm glad i survived..."

Maybe that's the problem, there isn't any TRUE friends I can count on and truly trust. I have hundreds of people I know and can hang out with but when shit hits the fan they wouldn't give me a hand even though I would if they where in my situation. In other words people are just hypocrite, backstabbing, selfish, assholes who are hard to trust therefore thats why I feel lonely all the time but theres not much I can do.

To all those people sinking deeper into depression: Be yourself, you'll find somebody you can talk to because there is always someone who will like you for what you are. Learn to love yourself and others will notice that and see that you're not insecure. If you like someone, go ahead, tell them, but be honest and don't expect something in return. What can you lose? The worst case is that the person doesn't want to talk to you anymore, but so what? Would it be better to be stuck at never ever telling them and secretly hoping that one day things will change? What could you gain from that? Be clear in what you want and act as if it were easy to get. But remember, always be respectful and kind, because it all returns to you one day!
