    As a human with Chiari Malformation and who has had completely blocked Cerebrospinal fluid I could not handle having a dog with this. It is sooooo painful and I could not put a dog through that. If the symptoms and pain is not bad it is one thing but if the herniation is located in a position that causes extreme pain I could not bring myself to put my dog through that. I have had episodes where the pain was so intense I prayed to die just to make the pain stop, on numerous occasions. This is not meant as being judgmental in any way! Simply trying to help everyone understand things from the dogs' point of view.

    @@FitchBerk Well, they only diagnose with an MRI, which is thousands of dollars. But, if they have all the symptoms, they can start your dog on meds. Typically, it's Gabapentin (nerve blocker for pain), 50 mg every 8-12 hours and 5 mg of omeprazole (to help reduce the spinal fluid). If your dog's symptoms decrease on meds, it is safe to say your dog has it. My dog definitely has it. :(

Though we treat his condition medically , he still suffers every single day. It hurts my heart to watch this video, but I am grateful you shared it. Hopefully many thousands of people will see this and consult their vets and get treatment early, so their dogs won't suffer as our sweet old guy has done. Sincere thanks.

    I got a CKCS puppy last year (my very first dog) from a friend of a friend because my husband had one before he met me and adored her so much. I should have researched first. I am now in the know about all the various health issues with the breed, having finally done my research when our baby girl recently had surgery for BOAS. Their suffering is even more heartbreaking because they are such wonderful, beautiful, sweet and good-natured little dogs. I cannot bear to see my little furry angel suffer so and as I watch these various symptoms I am praying that the few times she has chased her tail were just her being a dog and that her paw biting episodes were really just allergies (like the vet says.) I love my Cavalier and would do anything in the world for her but she will be my last, because I cannot further support or encourage the breeding of dogs with these painful health conditions. From now on I will adopt rescues only.

    You know that there a various tests that breeders can do on the parent dogs that will be able to see what type of illnesses they carry right? They can do MRI's, DNA testing, you just have to go to a good breeder. I think it really is possible to make this a healthy breed again. People just really have to research the breeders before buying a puppy. Those puppies are more expensive but are the future for the breed.

    K. Raye. hi there, it was a stressful first year with a lot of ups and downs getting the medication right but once she stopped growing around 18 months and settled in, things have been much better since. I’m happy to report my dog will be 9 in the fall and is doing great. She’s under control with medicine and although she just developed a heart murmur this past year and has MVD, she is asymptomatic and takes medication for that as well. she’s a super happy, spoiled dog that is perfectly fine and controlled 99% of the time. She’s the real light of our lives and I don’t know what I’d do without her. So anyone reading this whose dog was just diagnosed, Please don’t think of cm/sm as a death sentence. In many cases once the medication is worked out, your dog can still live a happy, fulfilling life :-)

    The grand majority of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have Syringomyelia, and it's becoming even more common in the breed with time. It should be an easy fix - breeders could simply wait until their dogs are at least 2 years old and only breed the ones who don't exhibit symptoms. Of course, breeding is a business, so it's not about the dog's health. It doesn't matter whether the dogs live their lives in pain because their skull is too small for their brain. It's all about the money, hence every purebred being severely inbred. It's disgusting, really. As much as I love purebreds, they should all be bred out of existence.

  • @emmettdonkeydoodle6230

    @emmettdonkeydoodle6230

    Megan Raynes Although inbreeding is common, inbreeding does not result in genetic defects all the time. It's a huge misconception to think of extra limbs or blind animals on the topic of inbreeding. All inbreeding will do is increase the probability of a genetic defect that is already present in the line. Many will not breed animals that hold this genetic defect. Responsible breeders have their dogs genetically tested to verify the risk of the breeding. If the pups aren't healthy the breeder will euthanize them.

  • @meganraynes1766

    @meganraynes1766

    8 жыл бұрын

    No, they won't. They will continue to purposely breed dogs with those defects because that is what's "desirable" and sells. Brachycephalic breeds (much like the kcs) are purposely interbred to get that squashed face look that some people find cute. To rule out syringomyelia, all the breeders would have to do is stop breeding the bitches that show symptoms and stop using stud dogs that have it. But they won't.

    MY cavalier was diagnosed with MRI scan when he was barely even one. He is on medication everyday and so far he has a healthy and happy life. He is turning 6 now. The only problem we have is his teeth are getting really bad but we can't pull them out because he can't go under general anesthesia, it will risk his life. My suggestion is if you have a cavalier most likely they will have this. It is reported 94% have this. If you purchase this breed please please go to an animal neurologist early for a scan. I know scans are expensive but it might save your baby. He just needs regular human heartburn medication everyday to have a healthy life :)

    +7lol2007 94% isn't an accurate statistic. Although the disorder is becoming increasingly common due to the purchasing of puppy mill dogs. If your dog has this, you received it from a puppy mill. Next time you adopt a dog, try to find a breeder that will provide you with basic genetic tests. If you adopted your dog from a shelter, that's unfortunate. It should still be their responsibility to let you know the background of the dog.

    7lol2007 I'm not sure that you understand what a certified breeder is, Anyone can become a certified breeder. The backyard breeders I got my dogs from were certified and they bred dogs with genetic deformities. The reason the disease is common is because of irresponsible breeding. Which means puppy mill dogs and backyard breeders. If your dog came from a supposed AKC breeder, what did they do for you? A responsible breeder would have offered to take the dog back and pay for any medication it needed. The AKC profits largely off of puppy mills, so having a dog AKC registered isn't saying much at all, dear. I'm assuming you went to the owner's kennels in order to meet the parents. When did I tell anyone to adopt?

    +Emi Loli +Emi Loli no please educate your self about the breed. I have watched many documentaries that even certified breeders breed cavalier with this problem. I was told by my neurologist that this is very common. Their entire floor used cavalier as the poster dog. Most dogs there are cavaliers and they were purchased from reputable breeder. I got mine from a good breeder and a Mri scan cost 1800-2000 dollar sometimes still won't tell you. Most dog that do have this problem don't always need medication or surgery. Every breed has its genetic issues there is no perfect dog. My fur baby did not come from a puppy mill. He was heart certified by vet , Akc registered. I checked both parents health history they were also champions. When we got off plane vet said he was healthy. Some breed just have problem likes this, like chihuahua with breathing , pug too. +Emi Loli thousands of years ago, we did selective breeding. Since the fall of monarchy, the breed almost became extinct. Like I said they have this because the physical shape of their skull. If your cavalier looks cute and like the rest his skull is naturally too small for the brain, just matter of time before his problem comes. Is there a definitive book on Cavalier KC Spaniels and their diseases? I believe that if a breeder does all the tests on the dam and the sire, for heart and brain markers of disorders that the clean slate breeding pair will produce good, healthy puppies. Am I correct ? I do know that these medical tests are very expensive. No matter, I think that is what is needed and should be expected from any Cavvie breeder . I have seen puppies being offered at $2500 each. If I can be shown the test results of these most important tests, then the price should be paid. But I am not sure exactly how many crucial tests need to be done on the breeding pair. I think my mixed breed Pomeranian/Chihuahua has this. It is heartwrenching to come to the understanding that some of his antics (which I thought endearing - like rubbing his face against me, like our cats) are really symptoms of pain. It seems likely that all breeds have these 2 diseases in one form or another. In hindsight I recognise similar behaviour in my former Pomeranian and my moms Chihuahua. Heartbreaking to know they suffered and none of us knew. With all the home grown litters of small breeds without a pedigree or with a pedigree but without MRI screening this anguish will keep spreading. I know people don't want to hear their pup is actually diseased and should not procreate, but we can stop the suffering when we educate people and MRI screen dogs. These diseases can be bred out of breeds, when people put the effort in. Have a ❤ don't breed pain !

    My cav sometimes will do an air scratch, a head rub (esp if his ears are wet) I am so worried, but compared to these dogs it is barely anything.. we were going to start meds to see if they changed anything (diagnosis by elimination, do an mri if the meds helped) but honestly now that I am watching this, it is nothing compared. Something that is on my mind is lead hopping and scratching, can you still take a nice long walk? my cav and I treasure our long daily walks. I am worried to loose that.

    I think my dog definitely has this. He's a king charles spaniel so it's extremely likely that he does. He does almost all of the symptoms in this video. Such as noises while scratching himself, sometimes he will run with one of his back paws lifted up a little, as if he's hurt it and doesn't want to put weight on it. Many more as well but I can't think what was listed now.. It was at least a year ago when we noticed that he wouldn't jump up on the sofa anymore even if you invited him to. So we knew something was wrong.. He wouldn't jump down from anything either. A couple days later he seemed to lose his back legs completely and would shuffle around on his bum and just drag them around. We took him to the vet and they said it seems to be an issue with his spine, he was given a ?steroid injection? and after a couple more days he went completely back to normal. He hasn't had any other injections since then but he has never been as bad as he was that week. He still has many of these symptoms but now he's back to his usual hyper self and will jump up without hesitation.

    Oh man, I've had 4 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in my life, 2 of them, who were brothers, would scratch and be vocal, as well as did a lot of fly catching and scratching. I never knew that this was a disease! One died in 2009 at the age of 8 due to kidney failure and diabetes. The other just passed away in 2017 at the old age of 14 from natural causes.

    It's not caused by inbreeding, but breeding for rounder and smaller skulls in ignorant pursue for cuter pets and victorious show dogs. The brain has not decreased in size at the same rate, and gets squeezed the tighter the smaller the skull is. Of course now that the source of SM and CM symptoms in Cavs is well known and scientifically proven, breeders are wilfully ignoring the suffering to retain the purely aesthetic feature in the breed.

    Jack Davis That's a dumb thing to say, "every dog dies of something". I don't think you realise what this disease is about and how much it has spread in the breed, they don't just die of it, when they do, they endure a lifetime of suffering before. It's terrible, and as a owner, watching your dog suffering and diclining over time just makes you feel shitty and helpless... People who have this disease describe terrible symptoms, they all say it's really hard to live with it, and they get much better treatments than dogs to reduce pain... If I had known about this disease I would have never chosen this breed, people should know about it when they consider adopting a ckc

    +isaac Bringas mongrel dogs typically have just as many problems and sometimes even more than purebreds. Mongrels have a much higher chance of having been inbred in their lines due to the popularity of mongrel dogs in puppy mills. There are many purebred dogs with little or no common disorder condition. Any smaller dog is at a much greater risk of developing conditions related to their skeletal structure than any other dog breed, just as how bloat is common amongst sighthounds.
