SynthEyes Essentials - 01 Introduction to 3D Matchmoving and Tracking [Boris FX]

Фильм және анимация

If you're just starting in SynthEyes, this should be the first video you watch. SynthEyes expert, Matthew Merkovich gives you a fast overview of matchmoving, the SynthEyes interface, and how to do your first 3D camera solve. You'll learn how to Auto matchmove, and then what the right steps are to do it manually to get the best results.
LEARN MORE ABOUT SYNTHEYES HERE : bit.ly/3vO3j62
SynthEyes is a powerful 3D tracking and match moving application that can be used to recreate a 3D point cloud from footage. This point cloud can then be used to insert 3D objects into the footage or to create other visual effects.
In this video, you'll learn:
• How SynthEyes does an Auto track workflow to create a 3D scene.
• SynthEyes uses a technique called "blips" to identify potential tracking features in footage.
• Blips are then converted to trackers, which are used to solve the camera motion and recreate a 3D point cloud.
• The Hpix value indicates the average error of how badly the points in the 3D point cloud don't align with the 2D trackers.
• A high Hpix value indicates that the tracking is inaccurate.
To improve the tracking accuracy, we can do the following:
• Use better quality footage.
• Manually add or remove trackers.
• Adjust the tracking parameters.

    Mathew, I've always enjoyed your teaching, thanks! I also noticed you have a Gibson ES-335 (at least it looks like a 335 or it may be an Epiphone--can't see the headstock) hanging on the wall along with a Fender Telecaster (maybe a Squire? or G&L?) I'm guessing you play them because they've both got guitar straps 🎸🎸🎸. I'm not sure what the acoustic and the other electric on the floor are though? 🤠

  • @alwayscallingmeblaze

    @alwayscallingmeblaze

    It’s a variety of things but mostly clean up and 3D compositing. Camera projection would be amazing to be able to have a workflow for too! I am planing a live-action anime-type video pretty soon (VFX heavy) and I know tracking with Fusion will only get me so far. I also might be looking into using the particle application on Boris FX as well. I usually use Fusion for my particles but again, I know it can only take me so far. So I’m glad I upgraded when I did.

    @callingmeblaze I'm planning on addressing Fusion a bit in the tutorial after the one that I am just wrapping up on, which is coming-soon. And regarding planar tracking in SynthEyes: For plain old planar tracking, I typically refer people to Mocha, but planar tracking in SynthEyes definitely has its uses. I plan on a short video covering that in the near future, as well.

    I appreciate your tutorials. Can you please talk about importing a png sequence vs mp4, when you have a long project, like an hour. I also found out to go to edit preferences and change the Max RAM Cache. Russ has a video about solving a long video but it is done for a 360 video and needs an update. For reference my RAM is 192GB and loading up a 4k 1 hour video leaves a lot of red on the bottom and solving is long. Thanks.

    Great software! I wish I got more jobs that require tracking because I enjoy the process a lot xD Question: about the lens calculation, you changed from "Classic" to "Std Radial 4th Order", but explained only that is "better" than classic for spherical lenses, which I guess it's the most common type of lens we work with (drones, cellphones, DSLRs), right? So, for most of our jobs, can we just change straight up to this last method? And then, why is it not the default one?

  • @BorisFXco

    @BorisFXco

    5 ай бұрын

    Great comment. Not all established pipelines are ready to take on the latest and greatest improvements, so changing default behaviour is never a decision we take lightly. Maybe we can add this as a preference. And yes, spherical lenses are the most common lenses we're surrounded by. We also have anamorphic lenses, commonly used in cinema, which we have to approach differently, hence the specific anamorphic models.

    A quick question on tracking, how do you tackle a shot with lens breathing?

  • @BorisFXco

    @BorisFXco

    25 күн бұрын

    The short answer is to solve with a non-fixed lend length and animated lens distortion. The longer, better answer is found in the manual. There are whole sections dedicated to lens breathing, with special attention paid to anamorphic lenses in the Anamorphic Shots Guide pdf. If you do a search for "breathing" or "Strategies for Animated Parameters" in the main user guide, you'll hit the right sections for the Lens and 3D Solver rooms.

    In the words of a cg sup friend at a huge multi-national VFX company, “In order to make SynthEyes as good as 3D Equalizer, you’d have to cripple SynthEyes!” 😂 And as far as Keentools goes, my company has been hired numerous times to track jobs where Keentools just failed. It’s a very niche tracking tool with limited applications, where SynthEyes is capable of handling anything.

    Just saw your comment, which I found hilarious. I actually put that dictionary definition in there to somewhat jokingly justify the naming. It is awkward. I would count on the labelling of things, and the documentation itself, to become more simplified. For the time being, SynthEyes might have some awkward naming, but there isn't a shot it cannot track. 😉
