A live synthesizer jam, with acoustic guitar and bass added afterward.
I got the Bastl Kastle Arp as a gift for Christmas. At first, I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, or how useful it would be useful for making songs, but I started to stumble into really nice spaces with it as soon as I switched it on. I ran it through the Walrus Sloër, one of my favourite current reverb pedals, but it was too hot and the Arp has no volume, so I routed through a little mixer first.
Because the Arp's time intervals change when you're twisting the dials, I thought I'd connect it to the EP-133 to keep the rhythm with a kick drum. And once those two were together, I could hear where the rest of the song needed to go.
For extra melodies and development, I added the Moog Subharmonicon, which is remarkably similar to the Bastl Kastle Arp in many ways. Since I already had the mixer hooked up, I thought I'd run the Subharmonicon through the Sloër as well.
I've been playing a lot with a different tuning on guitar these days (E A D F# B D), so I tuned the Arp to D major and played a song in B minor on the acoustic guitar. It worked really well.
At first I was playing the whole thing live, but I didn't have the time or capacity (or camera angle!) to capture the whole thing, so I broke it into three passes, one for synth, one for guitar (well, doubled), and one for vocals.
For sweeteners, I added a simple bass patch on the Moog Mariana plug-in, an Arturia CS-80 V synth doubling some of the guitar parts, and some harmonies.
I like where the end result ended up, dreamier and more introspective than I'd thought it would be. Seems a great encapsulation of my mood this holiday.
Thanks for listening.

I click a video called "synth jam" and get one of the most beautiful, fully developed songs I've heard in months. For f*ck's sake, dude.

I can't listen to enough of it
Holy crap. Calling this a synth jam is like calling the mona lisa a doodle. Great work!
Jay, to be honest it's not a jam, it's the complete song! No matter this time, which gear you have used! I really impressed by instant result, it's just magical, melodic and breathtaking!
Man you have no idea how much i appreciate the little discriptions of how you put the song together you put under the video. As someone that has always played guitar but just got lost when i started getting into synths this has helped so much in understanding how they fit into songs. Such beautiful songs too!
I think you're finally getting the hang of this singing thing. 🤩 Great piece!
Jay, your voice, chills...
Hello again from Corpus Christi. Your music is extremely inspiring. I wish to make music like this one day.
I live in Europe and it's a late Sunday afternoon here when this pops up. What an amazing end of the weekend. This is not really my style of music, but you Mr. Hosking, do it so well, I have to listen to whatever you post. Well done and thank you!
Very elegant and atmospheric.
Wow was not expecting that.😮
Jesus. That was magnificent.
So. Much. Talent. Dang, this is beautiful. Excellent production. So evocative.
I love your vocal tracks so much. They are always devastatingly beautiful.
...been following you for awhile & you have always been talented & unique. But I feel like this showcases a particular growth & in most enjoyable fashion. I guess I'm a sucker for the poignant.
This is so beautiful! Thought it was the usual desk-synth-setup (which is always great with you anyway!) but with acoustic guitar, your great vocals, software instruments... no limits, just good music! Thank you very much! Greetings from Germany 👋.
Wtf was that? Incredible, man.
Did not expect vocals and acoustic guitar in this place 🙂Reminded me of some of the Pete Yorn stuff. Loved it.
Heavenly. Amazing stuff! Your voice is amazing
I was over here geeking out for the first 15 seconds and by the end of this I was starring off into space in my feels.....🥲
Babe wake up, Jay just posted another one
Wow, nice, Jay. Feels like your strongest vocal track yet.
What a beautiful and emotional song! 🤩🤩🤩 (I think it's the first time I was not trying to figure out at all what was going on technically 😅)
There is a line in this song that describes what most of your viewers feel. Envy vs gushing support.
absolutely stunning!!!
Beautiful Sir!
Holy moly 🔥Awesome song!
The guitar takes away from this piece, honestly. I could do without it. Everything else is perfect
Beautiful

A beautiful song, one more time. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Truly enjoyed that, Jay.
It takes some doing to incorporate this setup into a vocal/acoustic song. Amazing.
Gorgeous track, Jay. Love the vocals.
Been waiting on a jam with the Kastle ARP, this was great!
God damnit, you're gonna make me get a third mini Bastl synth I only use in January aren't you?

@@JayHoskingI didn't love anything I heard from it on launch day, sounded a bit too close to the OG Kastle, but now I'm seeing more videos with it tuned in and wanting one!
I usually enjoy all of your videos but this one was on another level. Amazing song and production!
Just simply beautiful and amazing, I was expecting just some synth magic but left with something else above
Well Done.
Great composition Jay! Loved the chord choices on the guitar, and also your vocal performance, was very reminiscent of the more melodic stuff of Oceansize.
amazing
awesome !
Hey Jay! Thank you for your art, you inspire me and my daughter so much. “I wish all the best” to you, my friend. Greetings from Moscow in this orthodox Christmas Day. Love, peace and happiness to you, my overseas friend.
Love it ❤
badass!!!
非常好聽的歌曲!和聲進行非常特別
I get some Anthony Gonzalez vibes from this!
very Incubus style! Well done
duude! well done!
SUPER
Wow
FYEEEEEEEE🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful! Love th vocal. Tbh would like to hear it without the guitar track to reveal the synths more
Reminiscent of Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree), IMHO.
This is beautiful, love the dreamy vibes. Subscribed! this set up works incredibly well. sorry if you covered this, but how did you ad harmonies to your voice? Is it multiple recordings or a plugin?
@JayHosking

Multiple recordings. I usually try to do everything in a single pass, but I also follow where the song requires, which meant overdubs here. And thanks!
🎉
Yip!
Please tell me you make crappy jams too and only post your best stuff. Your talent is really intimidating.

I don't post everything, but I work hard on each track to get it as good as it can be. You have to give yourself permission to do better sometimes and worse other times. And your stuff seems great! Listening now.

@@JayHosking Thanks a lot for the transparency. I think this is the next step for me actually. I want to learn to take tracks further. Maybe not to greatness yet, but overtime, maybe :D At any rate, thanks for the kind words, and congrats on another awesome track :)
More vocals. Every song. No more no vocals. All vocals. Enjoy Vocals.

@@JayHosking "Words are very unnecessary. They can only do harm." 😆 Well, we enjoy the silence AFTER listening to your wonderful song.🤗
It's a shame that there are real instruments and even singing. Pure machine music would have been better. 🤔
