Synology LACP Setup - Link Aggregation

Ғылым және технология

In this video, we are going to setup Link Aggregation (LACP) with in Synology DSM. Our test device will be DS918+ configured as Balance XOR (Static Link Aggregation) connected to a TP Link TL-SG108E Easy Smart Switch.
Video time frame:
0:00 - Introduction about Synology Link Aggregation
1:10 - Setup Link Aggregation on DS918+
2:10 - Synology supported Link Aggregation modes
4:48 - Setup Link Aggregation Group (LAG) on the TP Link TL-SG108E switch

I'm confused about the 2nd part- Do I need to buy a managed switch vs. an unmanaged switch maybe? I currently have a netgear GS308, which is an unmanaged switch, so I don't really have any idea about how to manage its settings or which ip to use to access it.

Answered my own question:) I returned my unmanaged switch, got the same one as yours, and... Success! Thank You!

Can you use link aggregation between 2 directly connected NAS?

Do i need link aggregation if i have 10 gbe connection direct to my PC? (I have a MacBook that needs to access synology at fast speed as well)

If you have a 10 gbe connection directly from the switch to the PC then I believe you don't need to do that. However, we need to have a look on the Synology NAS. If you have the same 10 gbe network interface then it would be great. Else, I believe you need to configure link aggregation on the Synology NAS & the switch for these ports in order to combine (bond) them. For fast wireless access, the Apple AirPort Extreme should be good enough for gigabit connection (not really but close to that), else you can have a look on those new AX WiFi router.

Hello, from what I can see the Cisco 350 only supports XOR with a group of 2 network ports instead of 4. Make sure you select the correct mode in the Synology as well. Here is the link to the document www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/smb/switches/cisco-550x-series-stackable-managed-switches/1388-LAG-Load-Balancing-on-Cisco-350-and-550-series-Switches.html#how-lag-load-balancing-works-on-cisco-350-and-550-series-switches

I am using the Synology DS715 (it has two 1GB lan) and my PC has only one 1GB lan, do you think I would benefit the link aggregation by connecting them with a switch? Thanks :)

Hi, the link aggregation is for the NAS - it will increase the throughput of the NAS. For example, if only 1 network port connected to the NAS, the maximum throughput (in layman term, the copy speed via network) it can provide is ~ 110MB/s (940 Gbps). Let's say your computer is copying a file from the NAS, at the same time the other laptop or mobile connected to the NAS and get some files, then this 110MB/s will be shared between 3 connections. However, adding another port and configure link aggregation will increase NAS throughput to 2x110MB/s

another noob question, let say I've setup Plex in my living room and always stream(direct play) local files from my NAS via ethernet cable, at the same time I'm accessing my NAS through my pc, does LA benefit my setup ? hope u understand my question =D

Imagine that there is only 1 road to the destination. Now, we build a new road which also leads to the same destination. What are the benefits: cars can go on either road 1 or road 2, thus reduce the traffic jam. At the same, they will go faster. The same network: if your Plex fully uses the bandwith of 1 ethernet link ( 1 Gbps), there is still another 1 Gbps link available for the PC and other devices. However, if there is only 1 ethernet link, the if your PC and NAS download something at the same time, the bandwidth will be devided into 2, which is 500 Mbps.

IEEE 802.3ad connection failure, stuck at 115 Mbps on D720+ Hi everyone, Here you go, I hope you can help me. I have a fixed PC in Wifi 6e. I have a Netgear RAX500-100eu, in Wifi 6e 6ghz Under Nperf I am at a DL rate of 1600 Mbps and UP at 680 Mbps. I have a DS720+ with 10GB of RAM (8+2 soldered), 2 x Nvme 970 evo plus SSD in 500GB, and 2 x 6TB IronWolf Seagate. On my router, when I switch on the port aggregation in LACPIEE 802.3ad it stays inactive and my NAS stays in 1000Mbps. On the other hand when I put my router in static aggregation it is "active", my NAS is set in balance XOR static link aggregation (so not LACP), it is well then in 2000mbps FULL DUPLEX MTU 1500 with a single IP. However, when I do a file transfer I am blocked) 115 / 120 mo/s ... I do not understand

Hi, as you can see in this setup: link aggregation is enabled on both my PC & Synology NAS (2Gbps). Taking a look at your case: - The Netgear RAXE500 has a 2.5Gbps port 4 x 1Gbps port, which supports LACP 802.3ad. You can refer to the user manual on page 96 to configure that. It is advise to connect the DS720+ to Ether 3 & 4 on your router. - At first, you can try to enable LACP 802.3ad on the DS720+ with just a single network port plugged, and then enable LACP on your router, and then plug the remaining network port. However, If it requires 2 ports to be connected, then you need to do so.

Ouch I was sweating when I first turned on bonding on my new DS920+. At first the browser lost all connections. Then I found manual to turn on LACP on my new switch TP-Link 1500G-8T: www.tp-link.com/nl/support/faq/991/. After following the instructions for T2600G-28TS the Synology connected normally :-)
