I really like how you went through each step and added the drives and the SSD cache. Great detail that is needed when you setup a NAS. I was a little disappointed that you did not setup the 4- 1gb so you could have a faster network speed and I heard on the video you suggested or needed to plug the 4 cables into a 10gb switch to higher speeds. This is the first time I heard you needed to plug these connections into a 10gb switch but it does sound logical. Thanks for such a great intro video and I have subscribed and hope to see other videos on the Synology as I just ordered my DS1621+ and it should arrive next week.

Thank you very much for watching & subscribing! We really appreciate the kind words :) Unfortunately we don't currently have any 10Gbps gear so we weren't able to test out the link aggregation feature ourselves. If we have some new information/updates on this unit, we'll certainly be sure to create more videos on it. So far, it's been working out great and we absolutely love it. Thanks again! :)

Thanks for the review on the hardware & software to store and play digitized content you own. I'm really interested in comparing a system built to rip, store & play such content would compare (in price and performance) to Zappiti or other alternatives. Do you have any videos you recommend on hardware & software to needed to rip DVD's, BlueRays, 4k, and music CD's?

Thanks for watching! Unfortunately we don't have any specific videos/creators to recommend on this matter but it seems to be a very popular topic here on KZread so getting info should be easy. The most important thing is to make sure to source a Blu-ray drive that supports ripping 4K Media over MakeMKV LibreDrive, and compatible models are always changing! Hope this helps!

I have a DS1821+ and cannot stream 4K due to excessive buffering. Right now it's stripped down to the basics, I brought the router down and put it all on a table. There is the NAS connected to the new router via Ethernet. Then the Nvidia Shield Pro is connected to the router via Ethernet. A 4K monitor is connected directly to the Nvidia. No Pre-amp processor, no TV, just NAS - Router - Nvidia - Monitor. All sitting right here on a table with short Ethernet cables. I've tried two different Gigibit routers, two Roku's, and the Nvidia and it's the same. Enabling DNLA on the Plex Server in the NAS got 1080P to play on the Roku, before that it would only play regular DVD rips. (mkv files). I've tried multiple Ethernet cables, nothing changes. 1080P plays fine but 4K does not. According to the Nvidia, 1080P is Direct Play but 4K is Transcoding. Toids (KZread channel) is also using a Synology NAS and his Nvidia is Direct Play on 4K. I've been at this for days, I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm out of Rum, and I still can't find a way to make it Direct Play on 4K;-) It seems hopeless! I found a setting in Plex on the NAS, the Plex server from the Package Center in the NAS, to disable video stream transcoding but when I select this, it won't play at all. It just says playback error, video cannot play. If I don't select this it tries to play but constantly stops to buffer. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, MFK Edit: "Use Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding" Turn that $#it off! Unchecked that box and now it works perfect!

@@TwoGuyzTech There remains one mystery. At 02:00 am that night, I found the, "Use Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding" and got it working, the Nvidia was connected to a PC 4K monitor. It worked, I got it to, "Direct Play". The next day I bought a 2nd Nvidia to have one for both the up and down stairs system but when I connected the new one to the same monitor, it was transcoding 4K and constantly stopping to buffer. I looked all through the Nvidal menu thinking I must have also changed something in the original one that was part of the solution. Eventually I swapped them, I put the original one on the PC monitor and the new one on the 4K TV. The problem stayed with the PC monitor. So both Nvida's transcode on the monitor and both work fine on the TV. I never touched the monitor settings, so the mystery is, why did the original Nvidia work fine with it the night before but has never been able to work with it since??? Both Nvida's continue to work fine with the TV and later this evening I will confirm they work with the NZ8 in the theater upstairs, I suspect they will. Could it be that the Streaming God's decided they had F##K'ed with me enough, and realizing I was never going to find the solution while connected to an incompatible monitor, they allowed that monitor to work just long enough for me to find that solution???;-) Who knows but if that monitor had not worked that night, unchecking, "Use Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding" would have appeared to have done nothing and I would have kept searching for the solution. I think this will always be a mystery!

SLOW USB. I hooked up an external storage encloser with 13TB of data in a RAID 0. It is USB3. When I attempt to move just one folder I get about 80-100 MB/s. However, when I try to copy everything I am only getting between 2-3 MB/s. At this speed, it will take over a year. Is this a hardware issue?

I preferred it when no one knew about Synology servers. No everyone is an expert. No 10 GB switch is required to run the 4 Ethernet ports in link aggregation. It works better for load balancing and you’d probably not going to get the full benefit out of it like you would with a 10Gb expansion card.

In addition, using a single M.2 for read cache is basically throwing money away if this primarily is a Plex Server. Read cache shines during random file access on smaller files, not so much during sequential reads (i.e. large video files).

Same question here on the Volume 2 Raid 0, I would hate to see all the movies and whatever you put in this huge volume of 4x8tb drives to be lost if 1 drive fails. I would have thought SHR would have been a better choice(my humble suggestion) so you could replace a failed HD and also upgrade to larger drives when drives become cheaper or more storage is needed.

Yeah if you just created one raid 5 partition with one volume, you’d have the same total space, 1 drive redundancy, flexible sizes for the two logical volumes, and HIGHER THROUGHPUT because 5 drives read simultaneously. Figure about 200 mb/s per drive, so 200 for v1 and 800 for v2 vs 1000 for a combined pool
