    Remodeled a room for immersive sound. After spending $10K on equipment I feel like a fool having to deal with CEC, arc, and remote control juggling act issues. It's more aggravation, than entertainment, and I paid for it. I spent more time working on it than I'll ever spend enjoying it. Tech is a PITA. If you want aggravation you can get that from working, and at least get paid for it.

    Excellent. I’ve been doing the DIY version just with a Mac Mini and external disk. Running Jellyfin as the media server, also set up my router for external private streaming on the go. Looking at adding 4K content to the mix, need a new drive to do that.

    What drive do you need for 4K? I'm new to this, and am planning to use my backup PC instead of a server for now. I have Xfinity for internet, and I noticed during an outage that I had issues working off line with my amazon fire-sticks. I wish I understood what an ideal whole house system would look like, so I don't make newb mistakes. The tech industry, and advice seems to be built around dependence.

    I was doing this before I had a home theater, just so much more convenient then discs. Never have to worry about a movie going off a service, or trying to remember what service a movie is on. My server is always there, organized the way I want it.

  • @Antimonkat

    @Antimonkat

    Жыл бұрын

    @@qua7771 not sure how you mean that. If you are loading physical media, the compression is already present, you can't get that back just by putting it back on to a hard drive. Only way around physical disc compresion is through a system like Kaleidescape that generates a file from the studio mezzanine version and isn't constrained by disc format/size constraints. Otherwise ripping movies from discs to a server is really just for convivence. You aren't getting any quality improvements.

    I have a Synology DS1819+. It has 8 10Tb hard drives. I use Plex /Chromecast and a Chromecast Ultra on the tv. I cast from my iPhone onto the Chromecast and it serves everything great if it’s under 4k quality. I downloaded a sample 4k media file and tried to serve it to the tv downstairs and it timed out and wouldn’t play. I’m not a Plex expert by any means so perhaps I don’t have it connected right. Going to upgrade our old tv to a new Sony a80k this year so maybe that will allow me to remove the Chromecast device and serve directly to the tv which may make a difference but as of now it’s a no-go.

    Thanks for watching! Indeed the Kaleidescape is a really cool box, I hope their prices come down a bit as well. In our experience MakeMKV can remux all of the data off the disc and nothing is lost, and the SHIELD plays it back perfectly as well. Just like the original 4K disc.

    Nice video. Last year I bought an external Asus BlueRay drive, downloaded Make MKV, Handbrake and VLC player. I was able to copy one of my DVDs on my laptop, but the VLC player keep asking for a code to play back the movie. I finally gave up (is Plex easier?). I looked into Zappiti . Very Expensive. Like all NASs (their's is a rebadged unit made by someone else), it is sold without hard drives. In addition to paying for the drives, they also charge you more for the Asus blue ray drive needed to convert movies. And even after you have uploaded your movies onto the NAS, you have to buy their their media players for every TV you want to steam movies to (you can't stream them directly from Zappiti's NAS). I think a basic system would be over $10K. Then if Zappiti goes out of business, you'd be stuck with a worthless equipment that is full of movies that couldn't be played back. I guess they are relying upon people not remembering how that happened with Circuit City's proprietary DIVX system.

  • @TwoGuyzTech

    @TwoGuyzTech

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching! The issue you had with MakeMKV and VLC is odd. We haven't been asked for a code to play back the movie, but Plex would probably be easier to setup and run in that regard. We also agree with everything you said about the Zappiti - while it is a really cool device with a really cool ecosystem, you never know if the company is going to go under, and you're stuck within their very expensive walled garden. It's a really nice convenience but compared to the cost of a DIY system, it could be hard to justify.

    @@TwoGuyzTech I'm almost done with the initial build out of my attic home theater. Last December, I ripped hundreds of audio CD's onto Seagate USB drives. 2 weeks ago, I hooked up my Marantz 8802A processor, Oppo 203 blueray player and OLED TV and ols school Aragon amps. I first tried plugging a USB drive into a port on the Marantz', but it didn't provide enough power. Then I tried the Oppo which (of course) worked flawlessly. Since then I've been rediscovering music I owned but not listened to in years. I'm considering a NAS but it looks like there is quite a spread when it comes to price. The six bay you show here is pretty reasonable but I also saw an eight bay by Qnap that was over $2K. I'm not sure why it would be so much more, is it really better? You could buy two of the Synology 1621 for less. As for using half the disc for backup, I wonder if it would be possible to use two 1621's with one containing all primary disc and one containing all backup disc? I guess it doesn't matter, just use three and three in each.

    Thanks for watching! We're not sure about the QNAP, but our Synology has been working great for us. How large are your video files? I compress mine a bit while maintaining a good picture and good audio quality. I go from 30 gig files and shrink them down to 1.5 gigs on average. I use MakeMKV to rip my discs; them use FFMPEG to compress them. I use the H264 codec and yuv420p10le pixel format for the video, then copy the audio codec and shrink it down to 512k/per second. It’s not as difficult as you would think. I did it last year but seriously underestimated my collection size. (I filled 32 TB and had to buy an extension to my NAS.). The trickiest part is finding a compatible 4K drive for ripping UHD but the makeMKV forums are good for that. I have tried both Nvidia Shield kodi (I couldn’t get Plex working for some reason), Zidoo N9X, and infuse on Apple TV 4K. The latter works great if you aren’t planning on Atmos/DTS:X height channels. Otherwise I’d recommend the Zidoo. Nvidia works decently if you want a single streamer. But the usual recommendation I see on AVSforum is N9X plus your streaming device of choice (Firestick 4K Max, Roku ultra, Apple TV 4K, …)

    To be honest: It is not "overlooked", it is still not longer needed. Only a few geeks and nerds are storing their films locally, streaming is not the future, it is the present. In my eyes is spending money for a very big HDD nowadays waste of money. Better use big drives for local backups, but not for your (pirated) videos. BTW: Greetings to the former Elaborate Bytes guys and the MakeMKV team!
