Very timely video for me - I'm working on an FPGA implementation of the Synergy and just got the oscillator board logic working. I can confirm that there are four output registers available in the hardware, so it's not immediately clear why the patch editor only supports two. One possible explanation may be that the output is stereo and they reserve two registers for each channel - I notice you didn't mention stereo in the demonstration so I'm not certain how the patch editor supports that.

I'm looking forward to your FM class! I've been playing around with the tech since I salvaged my high school's ancient DX-7IIFD. That got me into Native Instruments FM-7 and FM-8 packages close to 20 years ago and always wanted to understand how they work at an assembly level, and I think this is going to be great!

Yes, going through the waveform equations would be interesting. Now can Synergize recreate the synth sounds from Xanadu by Rush?

The synths in Xanadu are all traditional analog Moog-style tones, so an FM synth like the Synergy (or Synclavier, or Yamaha DX-7) wouldn't be ideal for that.

Thanks a lot for presenting Synergia & the interesting programming session. Isn't it almost a shame that there's still no serious recreation of Yamaha GS-1 (with its 2x4 operators arranged cross-wise) including the famous ensemble effect yet? The visualisation of the clonky computer (for programming Yamaha's FM-test balloons) with its 4 flashy green windows should even today be fun to recreate & use in its pure form. The rough & analogue warmth would've to be reproduced authentically as well. Otherwise it woud make no sense. I know what I'm writing. I at least have GS-2 & CE25. Amusingly, KZread this time always translated “Frequ” to “Freak”. I've selected German.

I owned the real thing including a Kaypro for quite a few years but never could get it to actually save sounds. Maybe it’s time to catch up but I’ve moved to a more advanced platform since then. Basically every good 4 layer synth can already act as a sort of emulator since the originals oscillator / voice limitation made using more oscillators per voice impractical for polyphonic use. A pity though that nobody came up with this or a good CPM emulator in time. If so I might still be using it today. Kudos for keeping it alive though.

I have the pcb of the class ab amp and the power supply pcb came in just 2 days ago. Than i wanna try this or a like with the microchip Fubarino and some dac (CS4271) or the 8 bit dac8080.

holy crap, this is a wild plugin 😱 does it have MPE support??

I doubt it. It's running the same Z-80 code as the original Synergy to try to behave as close as possible to the original synth (you have to download the ROMs to make it work), and MPE didn't exist in 1980. ;)

Download it! Try it out! If you check out the intro video I did (first link in the video description), I go through installing it on a Mac. I think Windows installation in similar, but instead of dragging & dropping the ROM files on to the GUI, you put the files in a particular directory. I also show you where to find the ROM files.

@@Lantertronics ah, i see now. I'm still going to have to check it out. There are only a handful of synths that allow multiple feedback paths! thanks for the help too

If it is truly close to the original MPE or even channel aftertouch make little sense. Pressing a key on a Synergy basically “freezes” the development of the tone as it is programmed into the presets table. Only pitch and LFO depth can still be controlled after that so do not expect controllable filter sweep emulations and such from a GDS/Synergy/Mulogic. In that respect it was a bit of a pianists instrument. Understandable for the computing power at the time but also it’s biggest limitation.
