    THANK YOU!! You gave me just the information I needed to determine what is going on with my starter. Yesterday the starter just did the free spinning thing. It did it 4 or 5 times before it started the engine. This conformation in your video helps me make the choice on whether or not to buy a new starter before I take the truck to the mechanic, so I can just get it replaced and get out of the shop! Thanks again!!

    We recently had the garage put a starter in a 1997 Oldsmobile regency , starter was installed this summer in june 2022 so its still warranty , but have noticed once in a while when trying to start that car , the engine does turn over , but when you turn the key into the start position , theres like a 1 to 2 second pause before starter does work. But yes it a very very brief pause . And the shop we had it installed at has a one year warranty. Its got a new ac delco battery, that was installed in August 2022 . Thank you

    Tapping my starter made it work. My mechanic sent it to a local guy to have it rewound. The moron tested the starter, and it ran. Didn't rewind it and didn't send it back until he got his 80 bucks to rewind it - which he didn't. I went to the local auto store and got one that had already been certified repaired. Later spread the word on this guy and he lost all business from locals. Never got the starter back and never paid the moron any money. When a guy gets and order to rewind then do just that and then ask for 80 bucks.

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    If you heard a loud noise, such as a boom, from under the hood when trying to start your car, it's possible that the starter or starter drive gear may have failed catastrophically in such an instance known as a detonation. This can occur due to multiple reasons, such as the motor oil leakage that can make the starter fail. A detonation from a starter is a rare event and is not a common issue. It's recommended to have your vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to diagnose any mechanical issues caused by the loud noise. They can perform a thorough inspection of the starter and other components to determine the root cause of the problem and make necessary repairs. If the issue is not addressed, it could lead to further damage and potentially dangerous driving conditions.

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    A slow cranking noise and clicking sound can be due to several factors that cause difficulty in the engine's capacity to crank or inability to turn over. Some common reasons for the problem include: 1. Weak or dead battery: One of the most common reasons for slow cranking or clicking sound when trying to start a car engine is a weak or discharged battery. A weak or dead battery may not provide the necessary power to crank the engine. 2. Bad connections: Dirty or corroded electrical connections between the battery and starter can increase resistance and reduce the amount of electrical current that gets to the starter motor. 3. Faulty starter: A malfunctioning starter or starter solenoid could prevent the engine from turning over, and you might hear a clicking noise when turning the ignition. 4. Bad fuel pump or fuel filter: If the fuel pump or fuel filter is not working correctly or is clogged, it can prevent gasoline from reaching the engine and cause clicking and slow cranking noise. 5. Ignition switch: A damaged or malfunctioning ignition switch can cause a no-start condition. To diagnose and repair the issue, you should have the battery, the starter, and the power supply to it checked by a qualified mechanic. This will help determine the cause of the problem and the necessary steps to fix it.

    You can try switching the starter relay for another one that matches from AC or Wipers just to rule out the relay. They are clearly identified and there are usually several of the same types in a fuse box. Also turn on dome light, staying bright signifies open circuit when key is turned to start, going dark or off is usually is battery condition or poor connection, slight dim is normal.

    Thank you for this video! Can cold weather temperatures prevent starter from working?...The car is stored in outside carport. How long does a starter motor typically last?

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    Cold weather can sometimes affect the performance of the starter due to increased resistance in the electrical components caused by the colder temperature. If your car is stored outside in a carport in very cold conditions, it's possible that the starter motor could be affected. However, there are several factors that can cause starter problems, such as corroded battery terminals, a weak battery, a bad starter relay, or worn out wiring. As for how long a starter motor typically lasts, this can vary greatly depending on several factors, including the make and model of the car, driving conditions, and maintenance practices. In general, starters can last anywhere from 50,000 to 150,000 miles, or more. However, if the starter is not properly maintained or if the car is subjected to harsh driving conditions or frequent short trips, it may not last as long. It's important to have your car regularly serviced and have the starter checked if you notice any problems, such as slow or no starts, grinding noises or other unusual sounds.

    @@bryank2098 Hi Bryan...thank you for your reply! My car been starting up fine after a few days during real cold weather 2 weeks ago where it took a few cycles to start. The car is 1990 Acura Integra RS, 94,700 miles (yes!), stored in a carport, regularly maintained (I'm the original owner), and the current battery is about 8 months old. As I'm older and retired, I drive only 2 days a week for 5 miles at a time. Sometimes on days I don't drive, or if the weather has been particularly cold I will start the car up and let her idle for 30 minutes. I know that's still not a lot of exercise, but it's the best I can do these days. I plan to take her in to the mechanic within a few weeks, as she needs a CV boot/axle replaced, and at that time I will ask to test the starter. Best wishes!

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    If you have already replaced the battery and alternator but are still experiencing problems with the car not starting up, there could be a number of potential causes. Here are a few things you can check: 1. Starter motor: It's possible that the starter motor itself is faulty or has a loose connection. If the starter motor cannot turn the engine over, it may not start up. You can have your starter motor checked by a qualified mechanic. 2. Spark plugs: Bad spark plugs can also cause starting problems. Over time, spark plugs can become fouled or worn out, making it harder for the engine to start. Have your spark plugs checked and replaced if needed. 3. Fuel system: Problems with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or fuel injectors, can prevent the engine from receiving the fuel it needs to start up. Check the fuel system components and have them replaced or cleaned as necessary. 4. Ignition system: If your car has a distributor or ignition module, problems with these components can also cause starting problems. Have your ignition system components checked and replaced or repaired as necessary. If none of these checks reveal the problem, it's best to have a qualified mechanic perform a complete diagnosis to pinpoint the issue. They can also identify any other potential issues that could be affecting your car's performance.

    Very nice video. But what an intermittent issue? Recently, my 07 Ridgeline has a no-start problem. Usually, it’s a one-time thing for maybe a week. If it takes two or more key turns, I’ll cycle through the automatic shifter, then it starts fine. Would a park pawl cause this as well?

    Might be a problem he mentioned where the starter parts were not passing current in the starter . Or it might be a short in the wiring. Eventually, the thing won't work at all. Might want to replace in now. If out of warranty, there are independent garages that will replace it with a refurbished starter - much cheaper than a new one. City mechanic didn't even know why my starter was intermittent. Took it a country mechanic who tapped on the starter and it work. Replaced it with a refurbished one.

    My starter is good, but if there’s a problem with the clutch switch would the engine not crank at all? I have a crank no start situation

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, a defective clutch switch can cause a no crank no start situation because the starter motor needs to be engaged for the engine to crank. The clutch switch is essential to the starting system of manual transmission vehicles, as it prevents the starter from engaging unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. If the clutch switch is faulty or damaged, it may not allow the starter to engage, even if it appears to be in good working condition. Here are a few things you can try to diagnose and fix the issue: 1. Test the clutch switch: You can test the clutch switch by using a multimeter to check for continuity between the two switch terminals when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. If there is no continuity, the switch may be faulty and need to be replaced. 2. Inspect the wiring: Check the wiring associated with the clutch switch for damage, corrosion or looseness, which could cause intermittent electrical faults. 3. Check the starter relay: A faulty starter relay can also cause a no crank no start situation, even if the starter is in good condition. If you're not comfortable performing these checks, it is recommended to consult a qualified mechanic to examine the car for faulty components and perform repairs.

    Can a starter thats going bad intermittently not start? Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times before it will crank also hear a buzz

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, a starter that's going bad intermittently can cause the engine to not start and may result in needing to try multiple times before it cranks over. A buzzing noise from the starter or engine area can be a sign that the starter is failing, as it indicates that the starter is not engaging with the engine properly. Other signs that the starter may be going bad include grinding or whining noises, slow cranking, or no cranking at all. If you hear a buzzing sound when you try to start your car, it's best to have a qualified mechanic diagnose the problem and replace the starter if needed. They can perform a quick diagnostic test to determine the cause of the problem and recommend any necessary repairs or replacements.

    Would you reccomend a Motorcraft or a Duralast Gold for a 2005 Focus?

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    Both Motorcraft and DuraLast Gold are reputable brands and can be a good choice for a replacement battery for a 2005 Ford Focus. However, the best option will depend on your specific needs and budget. Motorcraft batteries are the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) battery for Ford vehicles and are designed to meet the exact specifications for your car. They are known for their reliability, high performance, and long life, making them a popular choice among Ford owners. DuraLast Gold batteries, on the other hand, are made by AutoZone and are designed to provide high cold cranking amps, reliable starting power, and a longer lifespan compared to other brands. They also come with a warranty of up to 3-5 years, depending on the model. When choosing between these two brands, consider factors such as price, warranty, and performance specifications to determine which one is the best fit for your needs. It's also a good idea to consult with a qualified mechanic or do some additional research to compare the benefits and drawbacks of each brand.

    Just removed my starter from my BMW 525i, not an easy task as I had to remove the intake, ;( Engine was hydrolocked with coolant in the # 3 cylinder (overheated and cylinder head cracked). Before I knew it, I cranked the engine and of course it was locked so now the starter just turns without engaging so I'm thinking the pinion gear stripped.

    After using portable jumper I get lights and radio back but when I turn key it just clicks taps alot . So what's wrong ?

  • @bryank2098

    @bryank2098

    Жыл бұрын

    If your car won't start after using a portable jumper and you hear a clicking or tapping noise when you turn the key, it's possible that the starter solenoid or starter motor is failing. The clicking noise typically indicates that the battery has enough power to engage the starter solenoid, but not enough to turn the engine over. Here are a few things you can try to diagnose and fix the issue: 1. Check the battery: Even if you used a portable jumper, it's possible that the battery could be failing or have a weak charge. Try jump-starting the car with another vehicle to see if it starts up. 2. Test the starter: If the battery is okay, you can test the starter by using a voltmeter to check for voltage at the starter solenoid terminals. If there is voltage, it could indicate a bad starter motor, whereas if there is no voltage, it might suggest a faulty starter solenoid or another electrical issue. 3. Check the wiring and connections: Loose or corroded wiring or connections can also prevent the starter from working correctly. Check the wiring and connections between the battery, starter, and solenoid and clean or repair as needed. If you're not comfortable with performing these tests or don't have access to the necessary tools, it's best to take your car to a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
