@@blue14428 it was a joke ! I understand why she left ....POB rules are very strict and even now some Etoiles are leaving like François Alu recently, but it didn't make a big fuss like Sylvie Guillem's departure. !

I saw this production on stage in the 80's while going through a very challenging time. Cinderella's entrance into the Ball, the flashing bulbs like stars, mysterious darkness, the sublime music - it was transporting then and a reminder now how beauty can heal the soul. Thank you for sharing this with us!

This is the very first time I saw Sylvie on tape. I could not believe at what I was seeing. Now after so many years I understand the humor, the spirituality, the greatness of both Nureyev and the company and of course how immense was Sylvie's talent not only technical and physical but also what a great theatrical instinctive and natural approach she had when impersonating a charachter.

If this is really all Rudy's choreography, I take back every unkind word I've ever had for his choreography being redundant and having nothing to do with the music! Although the beginning of the second act drags a little and feels unfocused, once the main characters enter, it picks up. Guillem is magic, and what he's done with the choreo of the step-sisters (plus their presentation) is hilarious and has most of my joints aching in sympathy (I think it's Guerin at 1:02? Where she's briefly standing sort of in 5th on point but she's bearing her weight *on* her arches?) You have to really be good to dance this badly without killing your body. I have to admit I didn't quite follow the sense of juxtaposing Guillem's sweet Charlie Chaplin impersonation (she taps and soft-shoes! I swear she can do anything!) with 2 fairies followed by Groucho Marx followed by two more fairies, but I liked the way he moved all four groups around the stage. And wasn't this broadcast as a Christmas special by a lot of PBS stations right around the time home video was becoming a thing? I missed it then and have always wanted to see it. Thanks for posting!

Thank you.. Many thoughts: Sylviie is well cast, and she and the Prince dance beautifully. He's a handsome guy, but could act a bit more; she acts well. The stepmother-stepsisters seem bickering, but not nasty nor with strong personalities.Doing the fairy godparent as a guy. somehow lacks glamour and doesn't pull him out from the crowd of other guys on the stage, nor add romance. I like the choreography, but I don't think the film era idea helps.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering why he kept the fairy variations as fairies of the seasons when Cinderella has just done that charming Charlie Chaplin moment, the fairy godmother is the film director and the fairy variations are interrupted by someone portraying Groucho Marx. I'm still in the middle of act 2 but felt it dragged till the step-sisters showed up. Guerin and Loudieres are pretty hilarious, though.

Pointe began with Taglioni, I believe (and Maria Camargo was the first dancer to shorten her skirt and remove the heels from her shoes so she could do more complicated jumps). There's a good video on YT done by the Royal Ballet on the evolution of pointe work.
