Sylvan Lake - Custer State Park Adventure | South Dakota

In today’s journey through the Black Hills of South Dakota we will explore another one-of-a-kind location known as Sylvan Lake. Created in 1891 within the heart of Custer State Park, Sylvan was created when a man named Theodore Reder constructed a dam over the picturesque Sunday Gulch Creek. This area is considered to be one of the most scenic within Custer State Park due to its various rock formations, streams and hiking opportunities. Before we travel to this next destination let’s recap our adventures on Day 1. Upon our arrival in Rapid City my father and I wanted to visit the largest lake within the Black Hills - Pactola Lake. Our next stop was the mountainous and tranquil Sheridan Lake. The final monumental location to wrap up the day's events was none other than the legendary Mount Rushmore. After a long day full of travel we decided to eat at Millstone Family Restaurant in Rapid City to try some delicious local grilled walleye in preparation for Day 2’s action-packed itinerary. Sit back and enjoy today's adventure to one of my all time favorite locations!

Hello. Thanks for this amazing video. Our family took a trip to Sylvan Lake in the summer of 1967. I was eleven years old at the time. We camped in a pop up tent near the beach. My Dad and brother went fishing one morning but I decided to go for a hike. Back then there were no trails and I got lost. My Dad and two guys from the camp took a car and drove on Hwy 87 to find me. They stopped along the curves several times and got out to call my name, hoping to find me. I was afraid! I called out, "please God please God send an angel to help me." When it was near twilight I saw Hwy 87 about 1 or 2 mile up the mountain. Next, as I looked down and in front of me, I saw a brilliant shiny tall shape about 50 yards ahead and it was moving towards me. I was very afraid of this sight and then blacked out. I do not recall taking one more step after seeing that brilliant object, shaped like a man. My Dad who is now passed told me that at the last curve in the road they stopped for about 5 minutes calling out my name. Then he saw me walk out of the ditch up to the car, "white as a ghost." Because it was nearly dark there is no way I could have navigated correctly to the car on the mountain side. It was getting darker and darker by the minute and I believe I would have had to walk another 20 minutes to get the car. I believe the object was an angel and it carried me to the ditch, near the road where my Dad was parked. I cannot tell you the feelings and memory I got from watching your video. To this day I cannot explain it to people and as a lawyer I struggle with this because, lawyers need the "evidence." Thank you.

You will have the time of your life! Another trail I would recommend that begins at Sylvan Lake is Black Elk Peak. It’s moderately strenuous but there is a fire lookout at the top with an incredible view. Thank you for watching!

@@MaryAnneRodis Since you have toddlers some other cool spots to check out that won’t be as challenging include: Cathedral Spires Trail (off Needles Highway), Badlands NP (a lot of overlooks and flat trails, Pactola Lake & Reptile Gardens (largest display of reptiles in the world near Rapid City). I hope this helps and enjoy your time in South Dakota!
