Syfy's Children of Dune is Epic!

Ойын-сауық

After the miniseries Based on Frank Herbert's epic science fiction book dune set records for the Syfy channel, the network was eager to produce a sequel. In 2003 the channel aired a three-part mini-series combining the book’s Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. They titled the series Children of Dune. Children on Dune first aired on March 16, 2003 and was produced with a budget of twenty million dollars. Most of the original actors from the first miniseries reprised their roles in this one including Alec Newman as Paul Atreides, Judy Cox as the Princess Irulan and Ian McNeice as the Baron Harkonnen. Saskia Reeves who portrayed the lady Jessica in the first miniseries was replaced by Alice Krige in this one. The Roles of Leto and Ghanima are Portrayed in the series by James McAvoy and Jessica Brooks. This miniseries is the only attempt ever at adapting any books in the series other than the original Dune book and I have to say, they did a pretty decent job considering the resources they had. In my opinion, this series is superior to the first. The first episode in the miniseries covers the book Dune Messiah, which takes place more than a decade after Dune. While the final two episodes cover the book Children of Dune. The series is 4 hours and 30 minutes in total.

For me the moment Mac Avoy solidifies the role of Leto the Second is when his grandmother attempts to use the voice on him and he snickers at her. It illustrates his evolution beyond anything the sisterhood or even his grandmother can understand or control. It's the best adapted Dune so far.

Honestly, with how good McAvoy was as Leto II, I hope that if Villeneuve chooses to adapt God Emperor of Dune in the future, they would choose him again to portray Leto when he finally completed his metamorphosis into a worm-hybrid. That makes me forgive the shortcomings and mistakes, and err on the side of "They did the best they could." whenever I criticize it. I will quibble slightly with Alia being over-acted; I always got the impression in the books that Alia WAS somewhat melodramatic by nature, and this was only heightened by the Baron influencing her mind.

I did always feel that PH Moriarty had a very wooden delivery as Gurney. Patrick Stewart was a tough act to follow, even though Moriarty looks a lot more like the Gurney I imagined in the books. I totally agree though - the Dune mini-series felt like they were made with love for the source with the makers doing the best they could with the budgets etc.

Glad to see the series getting some love. I greatly enjoyed the dynamic between Leto and Ghanima, the two actors really had chemistry. The soundtrack was awesome as well. I loved the way the series brought out the sorrowful memory of fathers, first when Stilgar greets Lady Jessica with a speech about her dead husband, and later, in the palpable feeling of longing that surrounds the twins growing up without their parents. There's a great scene where Leto and Paul talk on the sand dunes, that really nails the tragedy of the twins.

I thought that making the twins 18 instead of 9 was a stroke of genius. When I’d read _Children,_ I’d had all I could do to picture them as little ones even in my own head. Making them physically on the cusp of adulthood is just so much more intuitive.

The change in ownership is also why the Sci-Fi network sabotaged their other sci-fi franchises like BSG, Stargate, and Farscape. Basically, the network went with a very ratings based system for deciding to renew their shows. They would wait until the middle of a season to see how well the ratings were holding up before deciding whether or not to renew a shows. So the showrunners had to deal with a situation where they didn't know if their show was going to continue or end until they had already finished most of the season and they'd only have a few episodes left to either end the show if it was canceled or continue a plot hook for the next season if the show was renewed. That's a big reason why the later seasons of BSG were such a mess. They were setting up plotlines very loosely so that they could quickly end the show in case they got canceled. The last few seasons of SG-1 also got screwed over because the writers had gambled that the network was going to continue the show, that's why they were setting up such a big new enemy with the Ori. They had planned that to be a long story arc. But then the show got canceled and they had to rush everything at the end to set up for the movie to wrap things up.

One of us had to accept the agony, and he was always the stronger. ... In time there may be love, which is more than my brother will have." I loved this series because of its foreshadow to God Emperor of Dune and the great sacrifice Leto II must make to ensure the Golden Path. He will not just suffer, but will embed himself in the genes and psyche of all mankind to ensure a future free of the prophets words, the tyrants grasp and future predetermined. A future where humans make their own story from one moment to the next. Very few characters in fiction can illicit so many feelings as Leto II. Hope, hatred, gratitude, grief, pity etc.

Zannai Face Dancer I feel they could, the main problem is more risqué elements, like Alia’s naked training when she’s supposed to be like 14. I feel that if you really want to do justice to the dune or song of ice and fire books, it needs to be animated. In both series, the kid’s ages play a big part. Animated would allow it to look cooler, and have more accurate characters.

As an amateur theater actress I played some teen characters when I was already 22 or 23 and looked the part quite well with simple makeup. Just imagine what they could do. Anyway an animated Dune or ASOIAF adaptation would be great and would do them justice.

I remember watching this mini series as a thirteen year old when it aired! It was what actually brought me to Dune cause they showed trailers and promos basically in every commercial here in Germany and it looked so cool back then! The series was also what made me realize Paul isn‘t a/the hero of the story, which the Dune movie from the 80‘s and SyFy‘s first Dune mini series kind of let you believe

It was a goodie for sure. I watched it air live on the big tv on campus. Blown away. Had no idea MacAvoy would become so big ... kinda forgot he was in it ... but I do remember how well he pulled off the most complex character probably that I know of in science fiction

A shame what happened to the Scifi channel. The same happened to the Discovery channel and History channel. They all just started showing reality TV garbage that more often than not had no relation to the channels name. Love your content by the way. Thank you for making these great videos.

Mike Judge's Idiocracy - parody or prescience? I've come to think the latter.

True. This rather than cord-cutting is the thing that has killed cable. Cord-cutting is only the response.

Vikings was really good during Ragnar's era, so I disagree on the "garbage" part.
