    The most shocking thing about this is that it demonstrates Sye is able to be rational. He is absolutely correct than an all-loving god would not punish someone for eternity. Now, if only he would put that ability to be rational to greater use.

    I would have to agree. I wonder why they can arrive at that position though instead of the opposite, which is that hell doesn't exist. This is the conclusion I arrived at, although it led me to understand that it's all a bunch of horse shit. Honestly it's much easier to say that hell doesn't exist, when you actually research all of the biblical "references" to hell, which are few and some are vague. However, there are numerous references to loving your neighbor, turning the other cheek etc... there are even verses that imply that god is all-loving even though Sye seems to ignore THOSE particular verses, while claiming the entire bible to be literally true.

    OK, so here's my initial reaction to Sye's comments. Saying that God hates some people directly contradicts Sye's assertion of God's character. I'll have to find the clip, but Sye argues for a God with specific attributes (ie. He can't lie, He "grounds" love, etc.). Part of that specific character is God is good (moral) by nature. So according to Sye both love and hate are good, and are reflections of God's moral nature. So the command to "love your neighbor as yourself" is just as "good" as "hate your neighbor with all your heart". So much for an internally consistent normative ethic.

    Sorry Dan, but that is about the stupidest thing you have said, and you have said some really stupid things. That God's nature is loving does not preclude his wrath and anger towards anything that is against that which He loves.

    Dan, that's only if contradictions are part of your worldview. Sye doesn't believe in contradictions. Also, God doesn't have to behave consistently, thus his attributes don't have to make sense.

    what scares me most about Sye is his belief that he "knows" something about us we don't know about ourselves he "knows" we know it,we're just suppressing it that is as I understand it is Totalitarianism,couple that with his desire for a Theocratic system of government and he is suggesting something very close to North Korea.

    I was rather shocked that people were so shocked. I should think that freethinkers would have a little bit more background knowledge about the various strains of christianity, specifically Calvinism. In Calvinism there is a particularly "conservative" (more in the modern sense than the historic sense) form which espouses a reliance on salvation only via direct divine intervention for which there is no guarantee (due to predestination and the inherent evil of the reprobate sinner), proclaims that God is not all-loving and places immense focus on the concept of reprobation above all else because they believe that God does not love the reprobate by default -- that only by the chance of divine fiat can the reprobate be saved and thus be loved. People having this theological perspective tend to come across as arrogant, scornful and uncaring when dealing with anyone who doesn't share their views. They don't "evangelize" in the traditional Christian sense but often loudly proclaim the blasphemy of other differing Christians and/or the condemnation of other faiths and non-believers. They usually refer to all other Christians as "Arminians" -- even other types of Calvinists. The rest of Christendom calls them "Hyper-Calvinists". They are often very very fond of fire-and-brimstone street corner preaching. The Westboro Baptist Church is an (admittedly extreme) example of modern hyper-calvinism. It shouldn't take much at this point to see the connection given Sye's behavior and worldview.

    jessesipprell Well, yes, I did know that he was from a Calvinist background before going to the debate. The main reason we were shocked, or at least I was anyway (not going to speak for others) is that I for one am used to getting people saying "god is all loving", and it's rare to come across someone who is willing to admit so quickly that god is not. Are you religious? Curious.

  • @jessesipprell

    @jessesipprell

    PaleoClipper I am not religious. Never really have been, aside from when I was a child and not fully aware I guess (even then it was more like a belief in Santa Claus than anything else). I've spent a lot of time around highly intellectual Christian scholars though so I suppose some of it rubbed off in a purely academic fashion. Intellectual liberal theologians spend loads of time studying various Christian doctrines in excruciating detail, mostly so that they can devise continuously more sophisticated and subtle arguments against all the various nuances of Christian belief that fall outside their own specific personal theology. (Arguing with a highly credentialed and well educated liberal theologian is the intellectually maddening equivalent of nailing jello to a wall.)

    As in the video "What Is God", somehow after "6000" or 200,000 years of people "knowing" God, the people who "know" still say opposite and irreconcilable things about "God". You gotta have a really shitty thinking pattern to keep believing this. Sorry, but there's no nicer way of saying it. Smell the coffee.

    In the lower worlds of duality, named the physical, emotional, causal (records of past & future are here), mental, and etheric (higher mind) planes, there are deities that are confused for God. These beings have names, and a wide scope of responsibility for the various areas of the lower worlds. So, one thing is common, and that’s to give God credit for something that one of his appointees oversees. Beyond the lower worlds, which are worlds of duality, good, bad, evil, righteousness, pain, joy, dark, light, and a million other polarities, is another completely separate realm. This area of which there is an infinite number of levels, is called “the pure positive God worlds”. This is non-dualistic. It is also called the OCEAN OF LOVE AND MERCY. This world (comprised of many levels) consists of one feature only. Pure LOVE. There is no eternal damnation anywhere, except in the imagination of humans. Any soul who is caught up in any area that could be called hell, will be released from it, when he, or she seeks out, or asks for God’s love. That is the key. Yama is one of the Lords of the lower worlds, and Yama is also called the judge of the dead. After leaving the body, every soul meets with this great being to do a life review. When the timing is right each Soul returns for a new incarnation for the sole purpose of mastering ❤ divine love. 💕

    Well, this is another example of the obvious narrative of the bible, meaning that it was written by person's who reflected their world view through their writing, and therefore their war god. God hates some, and those are here by the good graces of the same-self god knowing he'd hate them before they were born, and he'd send them to hell or they would end up there. This is the pety, vindictive and sadistic behavior of an Iron age war god, and has no coorelation to any inspired writings from some divine author, whatever that would look like. Certainly a more appropriate sense of compassion, understanding and knowledge one would expect from a divinely inspired text. Additionally, why would a true god trying to convey a message to his children choose the same means as the other suppocedly "false" religions in the writing of a book, by men who the very book says are fallen and corrupt?

    Sye is taking the Bible out of context if he believes that God has literal hatred toward that which he has created by His own will. Sye also doesn't seem to have a comprehensive understanding of the concept of "Hell" if he believes that God "sends people to hell" as if it where a physical place. My God does not hate anyone. My Lord Jesus Christ (who died for EVERYONE) does not hate anyone. And I say all of this out of love for everyone may agree or disagree with me.

    Gary, why can't you just keep the 'love' idea and get rid of all the baggage. Nobody had to die for the idea of love to prosper. That would seem an irreconcilable contradiction to me. The fixation on crucifixion is tied to ancient ideas of animal and human sacrifice. This is not a moral foundation. Have a listen to the newcovenantgroup on youtube. Atheists plus christians who reject the evil god the likes of Bruggencate so admires. Peace.

    Oh, this is hilarious!! It's funny that he's pointing out that 'god' hates some people, because the bible flip-flops back & forth about that - first 'god' takes no delight in the death of the wicked one, then he 'causes' Pharaoh's heart to be hardened so he can kill Egyptians some more to glorify 'his' name, and so on.
