Indeed they are attracted to each other. They are both supreme, world-class culinary artists. They are both haunted by the family traumas of their childhood. They both come from immigrant roots. They deny, run from, remain willfully blind to that which we all see; deaf to what we all hear; silent to the thrum and crackle of the swing and sway of two bodies and souls captured by each other in the other's orbit. But, then, Carmy, the one deepest in self-denial, startlingly, stunningly gives it all away as he giver HER half his restaurant without her ever asking for it: so what is it but another surrender to HER, as he admits all, all of it, his "I-wouldn't-even-want-to-do-this-without-YOU" rendezvous with Truth whenever he is alone with HER under that table, in that improbable alley behind the restaurant, in THEIR re-staging of Renaissance painter Boticelli's "Venus and Mars," two lovers in repose: and how he looks upon her, barely able to meet her eyes, unless he is creating with her, showing off his command and artistry to HER, his soulmate, his artistic partner, his creative rival, his enigma, HER, she who OWNS him. Then he is all Karma, Karma, Carmy Bedroom Eyes. Without his virtuoso moments before her, he is lost: a stuttering, flustered, wavering man-child, an absurd Beaky Buzzard of a cartoon Carmy, hapless before before her. But SHE is always In his gaze, SHE is always on his mind. Even in the arms of the woman from his childhood past, like a Freudian classic case, Claire to whom he flees the present to the past she represents, Freud's past that is already gone, it is still HER, Sydney, of whom he literally dreams: flashbacks of her face, her eyes, her presence, her distance. HER. Sydney, ALWAYS enigmatic, brilliant, beautiful, ah, yes, beautiful, Sydney: He is always looking upon HER, transfixed by HER, captured, cabined, and cribbed by HER, fleeing her, running to her, spinning in space, caught in her orbit: always gazing upon HER, as if SHE were F. Scott Fitzgerald's great distant shore, watching HER with such curiosity, fear, respect, longing, hunger, thirst: DESIRE. The boy is in it. He is IN it. All the way.
