Syd Barrett-Terrapin

"Terrapin" is a song by Syd Barrett that appears as the first track off his first solo album The Madcap Laughs and is notably the sole representative from that album that appears on The Peel Session.[1] The song's arrangement is sparse, like much of the album, and features only acoustic and electric guitar accompaniment to the vocals.
The song has been covered by Phish, The Smashing Pumpkins, Marc and the Mambas, as well as David Gilmour, who featured the song on the live album David Gilmour in Concert.
The Syd Barrett Appreciation Society titled its official magazine Terrapin (published from 1972-1976), in tribute to the song.
I really love you and I mean you
the star above you, crystal blue
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...
I wouldn't see you and I love to
I fly above you, yes I do
well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...
Floating, bumping, noses dodge a tooth
the fins a luminous
fangs all 'round the clown
is dark below the boulders hiding all
the sunlight's good for us
'Cause we're the fishes and all we do
the move about is all we do
well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...
Floating, bumping, noses dodge a tooth
the fins a luminous
fangs all 'round the clown
is dark below the boulders hiding all
the sunlight's good for us
'Cause we're the fishes and all we do
the move about is all we do
well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...
I really love you and I mean you
the star above you, crystal blue
Well, oh baby, my hairs on end about you...

an artist makes music, that doesnt mean he is an entertainer, he just was gracious enough to share his art. I dont think personally syd wanted to do shows or any tours or interviews or any of that i think syd just wanted to play guitar and paint in a garden. Theres alot of talk of whatever happened with him, but i like to believe he just wasnt into making money performing music over and over or trying to be on the radio or make a hit record. I think he just liked art.

I think you're absolutely right. From what I've read I have the impression he really wasn't interested in the PR side of music, and being dragged around with the band to gigs and interviews etc actually did him a lot of damage and contributed to his disintegration. His sister said that once he was out of that scene and allowed to just enjoy his art on his own, he made a significant recovery.

tjf4375 I agree, on the song 'birdie hop' he sings 'I'm the only bird, a little third I had a yearning to be earning just a dollar a day and in a way you shouldn't like it; hectrachrome plane' I think he was solely an artist first, and everything else just didn't matter as much as making art he was proud of.

Check out their early stuff! Syd is only on Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and half of Saucerful of Secrets, but there is a ton of stuff that's been released of earlier stuff they played around with prior to that, going back to 1965. Piper is 1967, Saucerful is 1968. After David Gilmour joined in 68, they created some incredible ethereal, spacy, experimental stuff. Check out Live At Pompeii, Atom Heart Mother, the soundtracks they did (More and Zabriskie Point) and the rest of what they did prior to Dark Side of the Moon. There's so much great stuff.

Fuck yeah. Im sitting here in the wee hours of the morning learning how to play this tune by ear and I can feel Syd looking at me and saying "Thats a good bit there, Mate". What an eerie fucking masterpiece this song is. And whoever plays behind him is doing some extremely cool, understated lines that really add to the tune. I can imagine the dude just looking at Syds hands the whole time trying to keep track of the chord changes which have some randomness and are complete with fuckups that you dont really hear but just add another dimension to the song. That's a real rock star there, someone who can make a fuckup sound cool and in the pocket. Imagine if this song could have gotten the whole Pink Floyd treatment... could have just been massive. Instead its this eerie bedroom song, floating, bumping luminous.

One of my favourite songs ever by Syd. He was such an unrealised talent, very sad what happened to him. This is still one of my favourite love songs of all time, it's so hypnotic. I don't know any other songs which blend the theme of love songs and psychedelia so well. I think it's so genius, I wish we could have had more from Syd but i'm grateful for everything he gave us and I hope he found peace in his life after his music career.

@@nvoid2597 No.... not acid. Syd was stoned on "Mandies" nearly every day. What's a "Mandie?" That's the British name for "Quaalude." That's why it sounds so HYPNOTIC. Quaalude, which is no longer available, is a SEDATIVE and HYPNOTIC. It was very popular during that era. Syd's eyes became " EMPTY BLACK SAUCERS" because of "MANDIES," not LSD. People would speak to him and he'd look right through them, or ramble for a moment and walk away. He wasn't schizophrenic or insane- he was STONED on MANDIES and beer. Syd LOVED DRINKING BEER as well. Take about 5 Valium and drink 3 beers- you'll be SOUNDING just like SYD is here- very HYPNOTIC.

He was pretty far gone actually. He would mix qualudes in his hair cream, and it would melt under the stage lights and absorb into the skin of his face. He would spend entire gigs playing 1 note over and over again, or detuning his guitar. Even years after he was still a mess. Several years after his departure from the band, he was spotted in a London clothing store. He asked to try on 3 suits of vastly different sizes, pronounced them all a perfect fit, and left without buying anything. Decades later his mind started to come back, but by that point he was really sick from complications of type 2 Diabetes and he had no desire to make music.

The Barrett Floyd almost makes the wildly famous Floyd sound conventional. Serious avant garde music here. I borrowed a Barrett lp from a brother in law years ago(not this one;it was a double) and was fascinated by it. It has its moments. Barrett had a big influence on several artists. David Bowie admitted that he adopted a singing style similar to Barrett's.

Discovered this song when Frusciante played it last Friday at River Plate, it's sad i didn't knew about it before the show, it's growing really quickly on me as the track itself tears you apart, let alone the nostalgia from that night... They went from this straight to Strip my Mind. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Cried a lot during the show but this was just different, as the moon grew bigger in the sky and the clouds started clearing with a cold breeze from everyone at the stadium just coming down from the higher-energy Pepper's songs... Such a healing and almost magical experience, thank you Syd for the song and thank you John for presenting it to me in such a way..

@@charlesdeason1646 Dude I play the song and I spent time figuring it out... it is not off key whatsoever. The main motif is in the key of E. The solos were done by someone else and although they are technically solos they are seamlessly woven into the overall fabric. Hats off to woever improvised that... talk about playing for the song... some beautiful lines that really bolster the overall tune. If this had gotten anything over bare bones production it could have been a great Floyd song.
