Thanks guys!! Appreciate your comments!!!
I love this for calling out Polaris for the squeaks and rattles. Polaris gets away with so much in terms of quality because they were the first to go big time with the SXS stuff. These other companies have surpassed them for years now.
I bought an RMAX last year and love it. I ride it almost exclusively full throttle because we have so much wide open space where I live at the moment, and it has been rock solid. I ride with X3s and Rzrs, then use it to haul wood to the campfire, and plow snow in the winters. It's happy doing it all, and I'm happy doing it all in the RMAX.
The general looks outdated!! And it’s a Polaris, high maintenance machine! The Yamaha looks great and is likely to last twice as long.
This is great! I also appreciate you both going out on a limb calling out the squeaks and rattles on one and how tight the other was. I know you all can't get into long term reliability often as you are not on 5 year old machines, but even little insight like this is 100% helpful! Thanks guys!

I agree. When I first heard them say this, I was kind of shocked but glad they did. Its a huge selling point for me between the Polaris and the Yamaha.
It comes down to personal preference, lol...if you like squeaks and rattles, recalls, trouble, less power, less travel, less ground clearance, less cab space, slower, uglier interior.....then get the General haha...Its a no brainer

Guys, great video. One thing you forgot to mention is the R Max’s parking brake. That is an awesome feature that other manufacturers need to add. It must be nice to park on a hill, and not bind up the gearbox-making it hard to get out of park. What an awesome machine.
I was the largest Polaris dealer in America also Yamaha and Honda 65 years I can tell you to buy Yamaha hands down no comparison. Polaris has constant problems and recalls. Yamaha most dependable sxs period . Never belt issues on Yamaha . Polaris is junk when they get miles on them . Yamaha Kawasaki can’t go wrong with
The clutches on the yamaha are hands down the best in the business!
Think I'd take the Yamaha on build quality alone. I've owned a lot of their products over the years, sleds, motorcycles, snowblower... all were excellent. More accessories is definitely needed for the RMax and like you said, an integrated system for GPS etc is great if you can get a US unit. I still prefer the stretch and leg room of the X3 though and the sound ;) Thx of the video.
The doors, the doors, the doors on the Rmax is my pet peeve. I own one and yes I said this from the start it is the first thing to change in the coming models and the looks of the 2 seater will improve 100% (it’s a good looking rig without the full doors) but the 4 seater is just plain ugly because of the platform it’s built on but it’s a practical machine none the less. Oh and looks matter. Can’t for the life of me figure out why the bolster is so unfinished (not painted) it looks so cheep on these machines a little paint and a decal may help people feel a little better about them, they look like an after thought. Love the look of the Generals doors as well as the commanders. Over all I still feel Yamaha is far and above in quality, reliability and overall build. Loved the video, content, commentary style and quality keep it coming, it’s nice to see fellow Canadians thriving in this highly competitive field and giving people on both sides of the border food for thought. Cheers from Nova Scotia.
Yamaha’s don’t burst into flame. Yamaha wins. Pretty simple when you think about it.

🤔😂😂 so true
I have a 22 rmax sport. I changed my high and low speed compression and backed off some preload on the tender springs. The ride quality was incredibly improved.
The RMAX has a better air filter with the primary foam and secondary paper. Also the RMAX has better engine braking with the wet clutch. Plus it stays in 4wd going down hill for 4 wheel engine braking. The Polaris doesn’t and the rear tires just skid on steep downhill trails. Not the end of the world. You still have brakes. Just not perfect.
I really like this conversation type video format!
My first machine was a 2014 Polaris 570 Touring bike.Had it 6 years and countless off road trips, hunting, snow plowing never had an issue. My first side by side was a CFMoto Zforce 800 trail. Again, never an issue. BUT....we wanted a 4 seater that could handle trail riding, hunting and work around the property. After reviewing, and driving RMAX, Can Am and Polaris, My wife and I bought a 2023 Polaris General XP 4 1000. LOVE IT! So far no rattles or noises? Beautiful machine.

Nice, head to head shootouts are the best. I like the conversation format between you two, just casually talking about the machines. It would have been nice to see the Commander in the shootout, but hey, you have to work with the machines you have available. I am definitely leaning towards the R-Max, until I see how it fairs against other competition. Problem is, my trails are limited to 64in width, so.... no Kawasaki, or even this sweet Yamaha for me :(
Thanks for being honest about the NVH differences. That's real-world stuff.
Great video guys as usual 👌
I love my 21 General Sport for the farm and yes the doors rattle but it will help if you wrap a little electric tape around the latch bolts. Also changing the oil there is only one drain plug instead of four or five. However, the oil filter on mine is a pain to get to compared to the Rmax. Another plus is there is outside door handles on the General. It does look like the shifter on the Rmax is smoother but other than that I can’t see a reason to switch.
Always enjoy watching the shootout videos! Great job guys

I looked at the rmax, general xp and commander xt-p. But I was needing a 4 seat. I wanted a dump bed so the rmax 4 was out first. Then I had to fit that 4 seat in the 13ft garage in my toyhauler and that eliminated the commander. 1600miles on the xp4 trailhead general and no trouble at all. Very happy with the general xp.

It is a great machine and we've used the heck out of ours. 🤘
I owned a 2022 General, the book says 2000 lbs towing. Loved the machine.
Very well done Dirt Trax crew! Having owned my Rmax 4 for going on two years now the thing I notice most is it’s still as tight as the day I brought it home. And I’ve had it in some very narley terrain. I do wish Yamaha would go with the Walker Evans shocks like the general as they do give a much nicer ride. I had a 850 Wolverine X4 with Walkers and it rode nicer then my Rmax on the Fox which is saying a lot as the Rmax has more travel…lol. On a side note, if you think the 2 seat Rmax waking the 2 seat general is impressive you should put a 4 seat Rmax up against a 4 seat general. Rmax just says “See Ya!” and is gone!

That's awesome! Fingers crossed we can get a 4-seater shootout going next and bring the Commander into the mix!!
I’ve bought Polaris’s and before I could get it home a recall was is in the mail box…..
Polaris has the market share just because they were cranking out machines ahead of everyone else. They got the sales numbers and got lazy with actual reliability. I've owned yamahas for over 20 years and I love my Rmax sport. 70mph is fast enough, it soaks up bumps like crazy and really isn't too hot or loud inside
My '22' RMAX R-Spec w the Drive Modes & Yamaha Adventure Pro(I added them) still drives & rides like it is New!!! Couldn't be happier!!

Nice shootout! Both are good machines. Now we need to see the Commander XTP in there! So how is the engine noise between the two? I have the 900S and the engine noise gets old on long rides. Is either one of these quieter?
I'm so glad that I got the rmax 2021 especially for the non existing rattles that drive me nuts with the polaris general
@MrAllenski65
6 ай бұрын
with how loud the rmax is how could your hear the squeaks and rattles. that's why you don't hear them because the machine noise is louder than that squeaks. Makes sense
I have the 2022 Rmax 2 XTR. It's a beast with a couple of exceptions. 1: The adventure Pro is out dated and after 600 miles mine died. Dealer is waiting for the replacement to arrive. 2: Transmission noise. I am not sure how loud the General was but my Rmax is deafening so I wear headsets so as to be able to talk to my passenger without yelling. I love the machine other than those 2 things. I wish you would do a decibel comparison. Maybe the General is just as loud.
I got to drive both today: RMAX XTR and General XP 1000. They are clearly the same style machine, but vastly different in quality and handling. The General is slightly more plush, but feels very soggy in cornering and makes a ton of unsettling noises. The RMAX feels like a top quality piece of machinery and it handles like it's on rails. The wet centrifugal clutch arrangement on the Yamaha is brilliant. Low range is unnecessary unless you're rock climbing. Definitely, DEFINITELY go for the Yamaha.
You guys have the best jobs in the world.
How do you feel the shifting is between the two (F to R and vice versa)?
Thank you for sharing. ✌️🤗🇺🇲
I've had a wolverine for 3 years and it has over 4000 miles on it. Never had an issue with it and would definitely recommend Yamaha over Polaris. My cousin bought a Polaris at the same time I bought mine. Hers has been in the shop a lot. It's in the shop now for a new motor.
"polaris has a list of accessories that go on and on". kinda like their recalls. and every bearing in polaris is made in china and polaris wants more than a Japanese bearing from yamaha

My wife is co-owner of her fathers multi-brand power sport dealership that sells both Yamaha , Polaris, Indian,as long with Honda, KTM, GasGas,Husqvarna, and Suzuki. In our family we are Polaris riders ( personal preference) but I will tell you that overall sales they sell more Polaris units than Yamaha, and Honda, ( utv’s atv’s ). They sell alot of RZR’s and utility companies, farmers, and fire departments buy alot of Rangers. The dealership is also a distributor for government units ( military) and Polaris is the official brand of the military. Being totally honest one BIG downfall of Polaris is the belt / clutch set up. It seems that as soon as we get our unit we change the clutch ( Gilomen ) and get the tune as well. ( personal preference). I know several dealerships send Polaris recommendations to improve reliability and they have made small changes but they do need more make their units solid and dependable. I’m not say they aren’t dependable but there is room for improvement. As far as recalls, I think one brand has more than the other. I do know right now Yamaha parts are easier to get but overall it’s getting better. ( since Covid). My son is currently riding a Honda Talon 1000R and he says the overall feel is better than anything he has driver so far. I will say that out of all we sell Honda is probably the most dependable. We don’t see hardly any coming back for mechanical failure ( breakdowns ) as we do with Yamaha, Polaris. My father in law and wife are currently working on getting a Can Am dealership and that will be fun. I think whatever you buy, if your happy with it that’s all that matters. Anyone can nickel and dime every brand out there and they all have pros and cons. My family doesn’t sway a customer to one particular brand. Most people come in with their mind set on what they want. They also have a dollar amount in mind and buy based on price. ( not recommend). Some people but on loyalty, they been buying a certain brand for years and that’s all they will buy no matter the price, dependability or anything else. In the end do your research, read reviews, watch performance testing, and if your happy with what you bought that’s all the matters.

I got burned by polaris on 4x4 scrambler i bought back in 1999. If someone gave me a brand new polaris tomorrow i'd sell it so fast it would make your head spin. My friend i grew up with bought a polaris for hunting on his leased property. I think it was a general. Engine was under the seat. Any way it was a few months old when the 4x4 took a sh*t, last thing was he washed it and put it in his garage. Came out to his freezer in the garage to be filled with smoke with the polaris on fire. It burnt the seat and melted the wire harness and some plastic engine parts. He took it to polaris dealer they told him they wouldn't fix it, that he needed to buy a new one. That pile of sh*t was just over a year old.
Can we see a evolution of ... Back to the original model and see how the machine evolves over the years including in some cases the precursor model. Ds650-rene, wolverine atv-wolverine sxs, moto-4 - big bear, warrior-raptor, yfz-yxz?, ATC200(big red)-any honda atv
That's crazy how in each run the Yamaha pulled away by more.

Iv owned a Polaris ranger and had issues first 100 miles. Sold it and will never go back to Polaris.
At face value i like these both, however in the north east we have width rules that are 65". If you look at yamahas data sheet it says its 66, but 64" from outside face of rim to outside face of rim. I wish there was more industry clarification etc because that alone makes me hesitate, or even push to Polaris.
I thought the arm guard on the RMAX would suck, but it is totally fine. I'm 250 lbs with wide shoulders, and the only time I lean against the guard is when the machine is tipped 30 degrees, and then it's actually very comforting.
You guys are over looking the heat sinking in belt is much worse on the polaris than that of the Rmax. The Rmax has additional "internal" clutching inside the motor that prevents the belt from slipping whereas the polaris doesn't. This is why you keep seeing the polaris falling further & further behind every drag. This is why Yamaha is warrantying their belts for 10 yr's.
I don't have either and never have drove either but from all my research I'd buy the yammy
Polaris has always had the best ride quality. But yamaha is the best build quality below honda of coarse
@foodmaniac9339

Yamaha has been beating honda in reliability for the past straight 10 years. Honda has dropped to 3rd.
Reliability wise I'd have the Rmax over the Polaris any day...I do agree the Rmax needs full height doors...1 it would look better 2 it would be safer...I feel when I drive the Rmax it almost feels like there is no doors they're that low and it gives me an uneasy feeling at high speeds in turns...I also drove a General and I don't find it rides smoother than the Rmax at all but that may be the fact of the milage in the General when I drove it.
Make the Yamaha a hair better....there is no competition, the Yamaha will last for 30 years the Polaris maybe 3.

Yamaha is king, no comparison.. plus it's more reliable, it doesn't come with a self ignite switch like the Polaris. FYI General has 100HP Rmax 108HP.
I Love my Yamaha RMAX LE
2 seat the rmax wins the sport/rec hands down. 4 seat is a different story. The shorter length of the rmax4 is nice but it La is the main reason you get a sport/rec. a freaking dump bed.
R max just took first King of Hammers in stock production class. 👍
The general wins in how easy the maintenance is . I own an Rmax and accusing the clutch for cleaning / inspecting is a pain . Lack of accessories by Yamaha and the Adventure pro is inferior to Polaris Ride Command . I will still enjoy my Rmax .
The fact that the backrest on the polaris seat doesnt reach head/helmet height is a no go for me. At your guys body size that back rest is waiting to break your neck upon impact. Its just below the helmet line and i dont wanna know what will happen to your neck if you crash it. Huge safety red flag for the polaris there...
Im sure it’s the clutches drivetrains that Yamaha have for there engines

YAMAHA RMAX FOR THE WIN 🏆 Polaris for the plebs..
General is not as good as an RMAX but, in doing what? I am not going to be tearing up the turf on trails everyday. Very rarely in fact. Call me old school but I just like riding along and looking at the scenery in comfort. That includes not having to negotiate around those shoulder restraints. The General has got plenty of power, I have never gotten it over 50 and mostly stick to under 20 at most. Plus, as I ride it on the edge of my pastures and on the lawn, I like the fact that the General has Turf Mode. In addition, the trails I've put in on the farm fit the General fine but, might be cutting it too close for the RMAX. I have to add in that, around where I live, Polaris dealers are everywhere. Yamaha durability would be the only thing that would sway me. But the Yamaha has had widespread catastrophic transmission issues with the RMAX. Until they get that resolved, I'll stick with the General.
