SWORD names / classification / terminology

We might think we know the names of swords, but often we have been misled. Well it's time to clear the confusion, if there is any confusion to be had for your understanding of proper sword names might be right, or is it?

A bastard sword is called a bastard sword because while it is a longsword and designed to be used primarily in 2 hands, the smaller size and shorter handle makes it more effective to be used in 1 hand if you wanted to. It isn't as good as an arming sword in that regard, or as good as a larger longsword used 2 handed, but it can do both well enough. So it is sort of the bastard child between the two.

I think I may've figured it out: -Dagger - to stab things, carve flutes and cut your dinner -Shortsword - halfway between daggers and arming swords. Mostly for stabbing, but it can cut. -Arming Sword - standard one-handed swords. Best balance, and work nice with a shield. -Bastard Sword - halfway between an arming sword and a longsword. More versatile than other types, and my personal favourite -Longsword - the large, two-handed sword, that isn't meant to be used with a shield or just one hand (which isn't to say that you can't, but it's a bad idea). This is the point where swords start leaning away from finesse and towards brute force. -War Sword - halfway between longsword and greatsword: more in reach and force, but less in control. Defintely can't be used with one hand. -Greatsword - the largest type of sword. Made with the simple purpose of "pulverize". It has the impressive reach and probably quite some momentum.

If you run out of stamina, or coup de grace etc, you take Wounds. 0 Wounds is the end. Crossbow crit = 2d10 damage. One crit could potentially kill a PCs.

It was a retronym from the age of rapiers. Since all medieval swords were broader than a rapier, they were all generally referred to by this term. The Scottish "broadsword" was contemporary to the rapier but was far more similar to the then old-fashioned medieval types. Probably the only example of a weapon being called that while still in common use.

I think most understand that when we're playing fantasy medieval type games that we go by their classifications, not historically but... if it's a game like Kingdom Come or Mordhau... they should at least attempt it to be correct.

@Shadiverity I've been getting more interested with scottish highland martial arts and am curious as to the use of the claymore (the big one since the broadsword was called that as well). Since it's in that grey area between long and great sword, I'm curious if it might have been used as a big longsword, or if it had to use a different fencing style entirely?

"Wait, you're missing the point. The longsword can be used one-handed without the proper feat, that's why it's called a LONGSWORD! And of course it does 1d8 instead of a d10." Joking aside, I really hope this video will clear the confusion. Anyway, I would say it's MAAASSIVE, as you say. We could call it a Greatvideo, couldn't we?

During your Mordhau examination video when you looked at weapons, you called that longer version of the long sword a "war sword". Is that really about the size of the "unnamed" one you have here? Is "war sword" really a term?

the second one from the end (between a greatsword and long sword) was often called a war sword. And they wouldnt be carried, but much like a greatsword would be taken on campaign as part of a knights kit and utilized specifically on the battlefield, rather than as a sidearm

But ofc there are over 2m zweihanders but more for show that fight. So eny sword with overall lenght over 120cm is great sword.

The bastard sword in dark souls is classified as a greatsword even though in reality a bastard sword is a smaller type of longsword. Also what is called a longsword in dark souls is way too short to be a longsword . And the katanas are waaaaaaaay too long , longer than some greatswords in dark souls 2.

Here is how it is described: "Ice is a greatsword as wide across as a man's hand. The blade is taller than an adolescent Robb Stark and near as tall as Ser Ilyn Payne. Its Valyrian steel is dark and smoky with deep rippling."

Swiss baselards are kind of shortswords if you stick a dagger in your belt to go with it, and kind of daggers if you stick them in your belt and take an arming sword or pike with them. Plus, they have dagger-type hilts.

I'm to understand there isn't really an official classification, but my thoughts would be a dagger becomes a sword when length reaches a point where it becomes impractical as a tool and it's not primarily designed for killing with a thrust. I should note, that daggers are knives specifically designed to thrust, whereas knives are predominantly meant to cut. From my understanding, when, trying to kill someone with a dagger, you want to get past your opponents defenses and thrust. This is because apart from a few vulnerable areas (like say the throat) you can't transfer enough force with a slash to get deep enough into the muscle (and certainly not through bone) on a moving target and hit an organ, or cut deep enough where you can disable him. While you may slash with a dagger, it is more a deterrent to your opponent then a deadly threat, say nothing of how ineffective something as thin as a dagger will be against armor or mail, where you have no option but to thrust. A sword on the other hand, while you can opt to get past your opponent and thrust, you can also opt to slash and cause significant damage. Even at a distance, a larger weapon is going to transfer a lot more force due to its inertia and cut deep enough to disable him. Additionally when you slash into armor and even mail, you are still effectively bludgeoning your opponent, which makes it still viable offence. This is why Gambeson was over worn under mail, because it insulated you from this effect. Now that being said, what about the Rapier, which was primary for thrusting, as many swords were. Well, it's not really practical as a tool, it's too big. Apart from using it as a spit, you are almost always better off with a knife or dagger. Most knights were still on a budget and I'm to understand a good dagger not only served as his defacto pocket knife but also was a symbol of status when he wasn't garbed in armor. Anyways, I would consider the Gladius, Xiphos, some Cinquedas, the Swiss Degen and some of the thicker, longer instances of the Dirk and Seax as short swords.

As a general rule, i read from someplace that a dagger is a blade up to 40cm in length. Seems to be a decent guide to quick classification. Cool trivia: a specialized dagger with notches in the non cutting edge was used in the opposite hand to catch rapiers in duals. Dual wielding was most effective with two short swords, or an “arming” sword and a dagger.
