I had bought my upright with TI Spirocore Weichs, then changed to Evah Pirazzi Weichs, and now I'm using D'Addario Lights, and I really like them on my bass! I do not believe the Zyex will play nicely with a magnetic pickup, since the G is titanium-wrapped, and the entire set has a synthetic gut core. I digress. Love your tone with the Spirocore set (and just about every other bassist that uses them), and I never realized just how badly I needed Ed's Thought Bubbles in my life! 😂 Beer indeed!

the punch on those ti strings is nuts! the DI only almost sounds like fretless electric !

Nice punch and yes presence. Thanks Ed!

Gotta say...there is an added fullness to the TI tone that makes them sound better to my ears. Cheers Ed!

Great tone Ed! The Spirocore Weichs have a fantastic dynamic range but I also liked the warm woody tone of the nylon tape wounds

Funny you post this, as I've been using Spriocore Weichs all along, and I'm now switching to Innovation's in the near future (new upright strings were not in my bass budget at this time). I'm going with UltraBlacks as they have 9/10 of that Weich growl for my jazz lines, but a lot less tension to allow for some rockabily slap (which is what the gigs are calling for with my Messenger electric upright). Great video!!

I’ve tried many different strings on my upright (Evah, Corelli, Zyex, Helicore), but I keep coming back to the Spirocore Weichs. They sound and feel great to me, and have gotten better as they age.

once during a gig my bass got freakily disconnected from the amp and I didn't notice it. I kept playing and wondering "Why am I hearing my bass so clearly now?" Of course it only sounded inside my head, audience did not hear a thing. Sick.

FYI, for me on all my baby basses, TI Spirocore Solo gauge (red bottom and yellow tops) provides same punch as weichs but solomgauge have nice balanced string tension and less stiff than weichs.

I’ve used them on upright forever now. I’ve switched to other strings over the years and while I like some, none were as consistent over time as the Spirocores and every other set eventually came off and the Spiros went back on. One set least a lifetime and they sound better as time goes on. Well actually I’m using solo tuning Spriros tuned standard so a little less tension than weichs. Might be better strings out there but for no nonsense, defined sounds that still have great bottom end, feel great and last forever they are unbeatable. Biggest weakness is bowing at first but you get used to it.

The Tomastiks sound a lot better. They still sound like a "thump machine", but with some added growl to help define the pitch of the notes.

Sounds awesome and a big difference between both types of strings. What brand where the nylon wound strings?

I don't even play upright and I can hear the difference, its a much more live tone.

I have real string issues. Always chasing the “unicorn” your recent post on one of the bass blog/post/video reply/fb? I don’t recall where it was, but you wrote about the Spirocore just after I had ordered my InnovationGoldens... I really feel that now after playing bass for 40 something years, I’m grown up enough to try Spirocores. My issue is I do as many gigs that require slap as gigs that need tight articulate bass lines. Just torn. I’ve been trying to slap with Zyex... ugh. Thanks for all your great videos and advice.

@@BassWhispererTV Fair enough I suspected that bass didn't need one. I'm a big fan of your musicianship and your reviews by the way and a proud (if daunted) owner of your Jazz Double Bass dvd and a Stingray Classic on your recommendation! Thank you for all your excellent content. Good to have you back.

Tell me about the bass? Is it a real old Ampeg or a re-issue?
