Switching Laelonia Orchid from Coco Husk / Bark Substrate into Lava Rock

#repot #repotting #orchid
Join me on the patio as I repot my beautiful Laelonia Joice Hylton orchid into a lava rock and self-watering setup. In this detailed tutorial, I cover everything from root system handling to final potting, with essential care tips to ensure a smooth transition. Let's dive in!
Preparing for the Repotting Process
I start by gathering essential tools like tweezers and a small knife. My orchid, soaked in TNC MycorrHydro two days ago, is ready for the transition. The goal is to retain some of the older media and roots to buffer against the potential harshness of lava rock.
Step-by-Step Repotting
Watch as I carefully remove old media, keep necessary dead roots, and pot the orchid into a 20 cm pot filled with extra-large and small lava rock. This process ensures that the roots adjust well and grow into the new medium, preventing surface crawling in a dry climate.
Special Care Instructions
I provide a care guide for maintaining the orchid post-repotting. Given its preference for warm conditions, I explain why I avoid LECA and emphasize the benefits of using lava rock, especially during cold winters with temperatures dropping to 14°C.
Surprise Insight and Tips
Discover a pleasant surprise-a secondary piece of the orchid thriving independently. I share tips on observing new growth and root patterns, crucial for future repotting decisions.

    The next best thing to doing a repot, is watching a repot. I love potting up my orchids in lava rock and pebbles. Thanks to Rick L. You give great growing tips. Enjoy the experiment!

    Hi Remae 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly, thank you so much for being here! I appreciate your time and comment 🫶🏼 The potting up is always such a wonderful 'relief' because things can hardly go wrong after we remove the old media. Its the repots that I dread, with the orchids that I have in lava rock... it is so unforgiving on the root system. Unfortunately, in my climate, I cannot get my orchids into super large pots and leave them be for years and years, indoor space is limited for the ones, like this one, that has to be inside during the winter months. BUT, I tell myself, enjoy the now and cross that bridge when the time comes 😆 thank you so much for watching, Remae! Hope you are having a great weekend and once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Debbieeeee!! 😍 HI! 💐 I am so glad to get this one into this pot now. I would have preferred to get ahead of the repot a couple of weeks ago, because then the roots were still at nubbin stage and the risk of breaking them is non existent, BUT, all went well.... and woohoo... now, they need to grow fast and start doing their part 👍🏼 Moving on to the next repot candidates on the list 🤣 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! I hope that you are having a wonderful weekend 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    🦒👋💝 I still think coconut chips and the husk can be beneficial to orchid growth as long as watering is adequate. That one seemed to be enjoying the chips. But having her in lava rock will make your life much easier😅

    FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐good morning, meine liebe Freundin! I fully agree with you and if things were different, I would definitely try it out with some orchids, but ... reality demands that I keep things as inorganic and recyclable as possible. It liked the chips for a while, but they were salty at the surface, so just as well to get it out and keep the salt away for as long as possible. I need those roots, there is nothing else viable in the pot. Thank you so much for watching, amiga mia! I hope you are having a beautiful weekend 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Incredible! Your excitement about repotting this orchid is so contagious! It was so nice to see the beautiful new root growth on this little one. I like how you explain your rationale for using lava rock rather than lecca for this orchid. How nice to see that second plant that is growing new roots in the large lava rock. May they both grow well for you. I've been working to repot most of my dendrobiums and oncidiums in lava rock or pumice. I have been noticing that the pumice medium does seem to dry out quicker than the lava rock in my climate here in southeast Florida. It's only been a week or so since I worked with my Vandas and Vanda-types, but I think they are doing better with large charcoal chunks in their pots. We've been having our afternoon rain showers recently. I believe that is helping the orchids through the summer. A day or so ago I noticed that my Crumenatum had opened flowers after the rain. So nice! Do you grow any of the Peristeria elata? I'm excited to report that mine has, for the first time for me, grown a spike. I've been growing this orchid about 6 years. This is the first time that it has spiked for me. WOOHOO!! We'll have to celebrate when it opens. May you enjoy the remainder of the weekend and have some relaxing time in the garden. Take care.

    Pat, hi 😍💐 goodness, I was really thrilled to get this done! I was watching it for the past weeks and kept saying 'I know! I know!' 😅 thankfully I did not break anything that needs to grow into the pot now.... the longer they get, the more cumbersome they are to keep safe 🤪 The little one is a survivor!! I was so happy to see it growing roots because it had nothing of substance when I removed it from the pot. It came out far to easily. Interesting that your pumice dries out faster. I would have thought that it may be either equal or damp longer because of just how porous it is. While lava rock has nooks and crannies, pumice is porous so it would be able to pull the moisture from the air constantly. Thank you for letting me know that this is not the case 🤔👍🏼 rainshowers definitely are the best thing for orchids in summer. They explode with root growth! Unfortunately, I do not get rain during the summer months and if it happens, then it may be just a few large drops and we are done, I would not even get wet. Thunderstorms, like in FL, may happen in September, but all these years on the patio with the 'chiddos, I have only had one and that was years ago! 🙄 I do not grow Peristerias no. BUT!! Considering that the elata is an endangered species, congratulations on your success cultivating her and getting her to bloom! Your conditions are perfect for this one and it has proven to result in blooms 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥳 wonderful news! My iricolor has been on the patio for 6 years now and will be a first time bloomer... I am thrilled! Suddenly, it doesn't feel that long 😅 thank you for your kindness and support, Pat! I appreciate you watching this video and sharing your good news here 🫶🏼 have yourself a fantastic day ❤️🌸

    I wonder how that will do in a wet setup. Bro. negrilensis is a species that is quite dry in the wild, especially during the winter months. But I have the rather closely related sanguinea and it seems to do better staying wetter rather than dryer.

    Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! It won't be as wet during the winter, for that reason... lava rock 😉 meanwhile, I work with the velamen and if it isn't exposed to extensive dryness, then it won't be too much of a problem. As the roots are growing during the warmest months of the year, I am interested to see how much I will need to water them. Right now, I am keeping water away from them, just in the reservoir to increase some humidity so that the leaves don't struggle to much... vamos a ver! I am just glad that I got this one done! It was bothering me that I saw the nubbins and could not get to the repot until earlier this week 🙄 the rubescens growing roots during the same time of year, and still growing them strong (part of the branching on the aerial root is growing toward the surface of the media) I am observing which of the parents this hybrid favors. Hope you are having a great weekend, Michael! Thank you so much for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Have you know a time when roots stall out and you change something and they begin to grow again? I keep looking at these 4 nubs (approx. 3-4mm) on the stem, but nothing is happening (there's still 6 blooms on 2 spikes). Or should I give up on these nubs and wait for healthy ones to appear once the spikes are finished? 💖🌞🌵😷

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    Ай бұрын

    Hi Suzi 😍💐 yes, roots stall out, stop growing and usually that happens when the orchid is busy focussing her energy on other things, .... like blooms 😉 it can also happen when the orchid rests, stops active growth, temperatures are too cool / hot or there is a lack of humidity. But, what I believe is happening with your's is that, your's is still in bloom and for that reason, that is where the energy is directed towards. Those nubbins are not done yet. If not all of them activate once the orchid has finished blooming, some will. So... from where I am sat, everything is just fine and growing as expected 👍🏼 hope you are having a wonderful day, Suzi!! Thank you so much for watching and for being so supportive 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Hi Nina, very nice video, I was just wondering..I got a grammatophillum scriptum which I would like to repot as he's showing new roots. Winter temperature 18-22. Shall I put in leca or lavarock in your opinion? And, having thin roots shall I use little piece of lavarock, or being an African orchid ( not much water I assume) I have to use bigger piece as a vanda? Thank youuuuuu

  • @NinjaOrchids

    @NinjaOrchids

    Ай бұрын

    🌸🥷🏼 Dania San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, Bella!! I would use leca... medium to small size leca. I would also immediately put it into a pot size which will have you not having to repot for 3 years. Also, know that this orchid will 'eat' the leca and you will not get it back. Future repots will then just be uppotting the orchid because the root system is so vigorous that doing a complete root ball clean up, removing leca etc, is going to set the orchid back considerably. These orchids are so vigorous, grows so many roots, not just in the pot... repotting with root ball clean up is a monumental effort and not something this orchid will need. Unless of course, one day, you want to divide it. They are very similar to Ansellia africanas! I have only uppoted mine. I could up pot them again because they have filled the pot they are in now, BUT, I am not going to pay for the big pots they could be in AND all the leca that I would need to get it done. I just have to keep up with watering and flushing to make sure that I can have viable roots doing their job. Ansellias are amazing root growers, grammatohpyllums are triple of what ansellias do! Once in leca, they need the water to keep the root system alive. IF you use lava rock, the same applies... you will not get that lava rock back 🫣 medium size lava rock would be the way I would go... and remember the pot size. BIG! 👍🏼 hope you had a wonderful Sunday, 🌸🥷🏼 Dania San!! Thank you so much for watching and your kind feedback / encouraging support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    HI Shirley 😍💐 that little pot is a brand called Orchitop. As I am in Europe, back in the day when they first came out, they were not that pricey. I do not know where you are located, but in Europe you can go directly to the Orchitop web page shop.orchitop.de/Orchitop-S-Transparent however, they sell the saucer separately 🙄 if you are in the US, they used to sell them on Amazon but I cannot find them when searching for a link to give to you. However, here is a link to repotme, they sell them there BUT, I was shocked at the price!! From where I am sat, that is ridiculous, so please do not think that I am endorsing this price in any way shape or form 😱 www.repotme.com/collections/orchitop-carousel-orchid-pots/products/crystal-baby-carousel-pot in my opinion, that is extortion. Still, I wanted to give you some options, as it is not for me to say 🫶🏼 thank you so much for watching this video, I so appreciate the support ❤️🌸
