Very charming. But aren't those bells awfully big and cumbersome for the cows? They look uncomfortable. Pretty cows, though, and lovely Alpine views.

7humanrecords Thank you for your response. I understand the reason for the bells now - only used twice a year! You live in a beautiful place, you are very lucky. I think your English is pretty good. Have a wonderful day, Alfredo! Karen

Very lovely video. Is it a festival of cows or something like that. In India on the day after Deepawali we worship our cows. We decorate them with garlands and offer them sumptuous meals. Could u tell something more about any such thing in Switzerland.

Laxmi Bhatt - I don't know for sure, but I think this is done annually. They bring the cows from the barns out to pasture after the snow has melted.

This happens more or less all over the alps, when the weather is stable, temperatures are not too cold in the high alps and the snow is almost gone. So that differs from year to year and town to town. BTW,I saw it 2 weeks ago in the bavarian alps, normally it should be a few weeks earlier, but, as i said it depends, on the weather and conditions.

I think it is the Engadine valley because I’m sure I can hear the family speaking in Romansch which is only spoken in the Engadine valley. For example, the Engadine valley is the location of villages like Pontresina and St Moritz. The children speak Romansch at home until about 6 or 7 when they learn Swiss-German in school, then French, then English by 6th grade. Remember that Switzerland is natively half German speaking (Zurich) and half French speaking (Geneva). So children must learn at least 3 or 4 languages early in life.

Also, each bell has a unique, deep gong or higher ping so the herders identify each cow in pastures at night (milking) or in mountain fog. Or when lost. Dates back a thousand years or more. The bells across Europe are forever. The flowers on the cows are bestowed at summer’s end when the herd parades through the villages on their way down to the lower mountains where they winter. The crown flowers are worn only by the cows they gave the most milk in the high mountains where the Swiss cheese and butter is made.
