Swiss Have a Swell Time in Barcelona | 30th April | America's Cup

Спорт

Overnight in Barcelona, it wasn’t looking good for a productive day on Tuesday, but with the wind-driven front passing over quicker than expected, the remnants were more than acceptable despite overcast conditions and a grey demeanour all over the immediate waterfront. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, keen to keep the training pressure on, docked-out before midday and made the absolute best of a diminishing breeze and a leftover sharp chop.

One thing that clearly stands out is how little wash and spray are coming off the foil arm. Almost none most of the time. Very impressive. Surely, that has to count for something in hydrodynamics.

It's striking how controlled the boats are looking this time around compared to the early stages in the last campaign. All the teams we have seen so far seem to have nailed the pitch and ride height. This form of sailing seems to be maturing fast.

This is going to be a great cup. Teams have had enough experience and time to play catch up to the kiwis. The question is has ETNZ levelled up as well? They were out the box and sailing same day and flying in 30 knots a few days later. Pushing it to the max and looking very polished while doing it. Bring it on!

I see much less sprays from the arms compared to Luna Rossa and Taihoro. It's surprising the other teams haven't focused on this detail. The extremal arms section going into the foils have smaller area here and when the the arm is duly lowered the sprays are remarkably reduced ...and so the drag that follows. 😮

Yes - but perhaps that involves trade-offs in terms of the lift they achieve? We won't really know till we see them head-to-head. Team NZ are so damn effective that it's hard to imagine they are missing a trick, and they are keeping their race foils under wraps.

Well, the more probing the reporters are the more reticent the crew will be to respond. No one wants to reveal too much for the sake of their team, and that will always cause the fans to be unsatisfied with these interviews. It's the nature of the beast and both sides are very conscious of the circumstances.

Why are nations associated with any of these boats/teams? What is the minimum requirement for a boat to incorporate the name of a country? A physical yacht club in that country - which can then comb the world for the best designers, crews, etc and then hire them?

There’s a nationality rule for the AC (you can google it). So: All crew members of Alinghi are Swiss, the Boat was built in Switzerland. Btw. 25% (orvrven mire) of the population of Switzerland are foreigners. Mixed teams from all of the world is quite common in Switzerland. So if you want to be very subtle, this rule is a little bit strange when it’s tested agains reality
