SwingOut Tire Carrier for Lexus GX470

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video details the process for installing a Swing Out Tire Carrier onto the frame of a Lexus GX470 and opening the OEM bumper cover to install the hinge, swing arm and latch system.
I used the double shear hinge and tire carrier latch from 4x Innovations. They're both really strong pieces of hardware.

    I don’t think I have a double shear hinge swingarm for one of those vehicles, but I do have an older pin/axle hinge for an 04 Tahoe … kzread.info/dash/bejne/fqeDq6ewnMyfhto.htmlsi=TFldTv4rF-qp1sMS Wouldn’t be too hard for you to adapt that build to the newer double shear hinge bracket setup I’m using these days. Or come on by sometime and we can chat about doing it on your rig. I’m about 1.5 hours southwest of downtown Houston.

    I'm going to follow your lead! You wouldn't happen to have the dimensions of the 2x2 pieces you welded to the cross member would you? I'm not to clear how you measured to keep the bumper cover clear. Also, do you think you could have used a different closing latch to keep the swing-arm closed? Seems like that is the only area that you really didn't cover as closely. Thanks for helping the community here! Best!

    Hi Doug. Thanks for checking out the video and glad you liked it. Since I typically do everything custom each build tends to be a bit different. This is one of the first Swingarm I made and I’ve since done them a number of different ways. I still really like that 4xInnovations hinge but usually use a u-bolt latch as a closure. I can typically make a smaller opening in the bumper with the u-bolt latch. The 4x latch is really pricey, and a lot more involved to install so I don’t typically use that anymore unless people really want it and don’t mind paying way more to have it made with that system. I just finished a gx470 Swingarm and will get around soon (I hope) to getting that video up. I’ve been busy renovating our house in the sw Colorado mountains so that’s taken a bunch of my time lately. For the tire carrier post the height of the post is determined by the location you’d like the wheel to sit. But generally I have it at about 19 inches tall and the angled supports are 15 inches longest measurement with the ends both cut at 45°.

    Thanks for watching the video Jesus. I’ve made them swinging out to either direction so there’s no issue with it hanging on the left side. It’s entirely up to what the client wants. On this one he wanted it out of the way when the door was opened. On others I’ve built people want it swinging left. I’ve made a number of them with drop down tables and we always have those hing and swing to the left.

    Really nice. But the purpose? To not have to take everything out of the back to get to the tire release? Or did you create a well in the back where the tire was? Also any issues with the license plate being covered up too much? Super solid build.

  • @OffroadGrind

    @OffroadGrind

    Thanks for checking out the video. Usually ppl go with the rear tire mount because they increase the size of their tires so much more than the stock tire size that the new spare won’t fit in the normal spot anymore. The stock tire mounts up from underneath the truck so there’s not a spare wheel well like in most trucks.

I just got it barely above the level of soccer mom status. LOL! I have a couple of vids on here I made just for fun and to have a record. Not a content creator at all. You could potentially put a well where the old tire was and cut out from the back for tons of extra storage. With your excellent metal working skillset that would be yet another cool project IMO. Hi Lior. Thanks for watching the video. I’ve made them swing out to the right and for others had them swing to the left. It all depends on what the client wants. I find for the Lexus’, where the door swings out to the right, having the swingarm go to the right gets it out of the way and allows lots of access to the rear cargo area. The ones I’ve had swing to the left were built with a table so it allows the back to be open, door to the right, and the drop down table to the left.

    Hi Mitchell. Thanks for checking out the video. Just uploading another for a GX 470 for a complete rear bumper with tire swingout and drop down table. I believe on this (and others) I usually use 3/16” thick 3x2” rectangular tubing for the hinge brackets/posts, 1/8” 3x2” rectangular tube for the swingarm, 3/16” 2x2” square tubing for the tire carrier post and supports and 1/4” plate steel for the tire plate. Hope that helps.
