Actually, Iga - wonderfully refreshingly - means what she says every time (it's very Polish and very different from the English way, where everyone is supposed to decipher all kinds of codes instead), so we can trust her when she's said that for her Wimby was a tournament like any other (just obviously a bit more difficult). She also said she loved RG most, not surprisingly, and perceives the Olympics as the most prestigious event. The Brits just suffer from terrible incurable case of megalomania, which ironically makes them less and less respected. And as they treated her appallingly throughout in many ways (Wimby itself, press coverage, audience booing her for no reason last night etc), I hope she simply never comes back. She doesn't need Wimby and they might discover too late that they needed her.

at least we get behind the tournament here , wait till the us open the americans barely care about it these days, in the early rounds the main stadiums are half full most the time.

I wonder if you have ever talked in the same manner about Osaka (whom you idealise so), who has achieved absolutely nothing on grass or clay, never reaching the 4th round of Wimbledon and RG. I like listening to you guys, but sometimes you can be prejudiced and envious. Iga may never even win Wimbledon, just like Sampras never won RG. Is that then a reason to criticise her in such a manner or belittle her achievements? And all of that because she didn't explicitly say that she wanted to win Wimbledon? She wants it. She said many times that she wanted to win all the Slams. But this year, the Olympics are the priority. In addition, the girl has played nine weeks on clay, all the matches at very high intensity. Imagine it is not so easy after such an intensive game to change the surface twice in five weeks. Was it not the reason that Sabalenka sacrificed the Olympics? Perhaps Iga, for the same reason, sacrificed Wimbledon even though she played it.

Very well said. There are many other players who struggle on some surfaces. Iga has a style of play and a forehand that suits clay and hardcourt but not grass. I don't understand, why it's so difficult to understand. She'll not change her style of play just to please some malcontents.

Maybe it's due to the fact she is nr1. They might have a preconceived notion in their minds (unconsciously) that a world nr 1 should be good an all surfaces. It make sense in a way becuase of the Big 3 and Serena dominating on all surfaces over the past two decades. But it haven't always been the the case, many former world nr1 didn't master all surfaces. Sampras is probably the most famous example.

I came here because I thought something interesting and constructive would be said, but instead, I hear complaining, because Iga didn't say directly that she wanted to win Wimbledon or that she wanted to improve on every surface (which she said many times at conferences). On top of that, you were counting on her winning Wimbledon this year when she didn't have time to prepare for grass, after intense 9 weeks on clay and before weeks from the tournament of a lifetime played on clay again. What kind of journalists and tennis experts are you?

It is bias saying.."It's Wimbledon". Sure, she might never win it but maybe one day she will.

No they were booing her because yet again as in other tournaments Iga took a prolonged toilet break tactic to try and disrupt her opponent's momentum whenever she's behind but luckily Putintseva wasn't affected.

They showed it in last year's Wimbledon match against Svitolina and now when they booed the best player in the world. English manners stayed at home. The English have always been competing with France, it is a historical fact and if the player favors France the English will show who is boss. Every player has limitations, because everyone is a human being, not a machine. Iga won the junior Wimbledon, but apparently she prefers to stay in shape for France and I'm not surprised at all.

I don't think you fully understand how important the Olympics are to Iga and how much that plays into it this year. Olympics at Roland Garros are once in a lifetime opportunity for her. The fact that they come at a perfect time when she's so dominant there makes a "regular" Wimbledon pale in comparison.

I agree. I thought all along that the best thing for her to do was just skip the entire grass season to focus on the Olympics.

I watched the match again, to me it looked like Iga did absolutely nothing to win that match. Her footwork wasnt there at all - like she played to lose that match. For those who saw her final at RG in 2020, she has a complete arsenal of shots. I truly hope she goes on that vacation and gets her sparks back. Go, Iga.

Iga is not comfortable on grass like she is on other surfaces, however, I think, it's more about being ready for Wimbledon after a tough clay season, where she is the player who wins and therefore plays the most. She somehow must find a way to recover quickly; physically and mentally after that part of the season, which is not easy. Grass is always tricky when you don't feel very comfortable with it or play little on it. Clay and hard courts are better because you have more time to improve. The Olympics are Iga's priority and it was reasonable to not play a warm-up event this year and take a few weeks off, even at the expense of Wimbledon. She will still have plenty of chances to win it when you cannot say that about the Olympics, and in Paris, she is a big favourite for gold. I'm confident she will figure the grass out, but if you expected her to win this year, you are naive. I'm an Iga fan and didn't believe she would reach the Q this year. Actually, I'm happy she didn't for she will have more time to come back to clay and prepare fully for Paris. Also, don't be so dramatic and don't take offence because she didn't directly say she wanted to win Wimbledon and improve on it. Iga is a very ambitious and determined girl and her dream has been to win every Slam since she was a teen. But she wiil not rush things in the Olympics year and forces her body and muscles to such extreme (changing the surface from clay to grass and back to clay), She is too msart for that, thankfully.

Absolutely not. Iga wants to win Wimby more than anyone else. Only problem is, she dominates clay season more than anyone in last 20 years. Within 3 weeks she has to play Wimbledon which is totally a different surface. She needs rest. She wants to balance her health and hectic schedules by skipping pre events in grass for her longevity. How many players got injured switching from clay to grass this year . Sabalenka, Vondy, Ons all got injured. It’s the good decision from Iga to skip pre grass events after complete dominance in clay. It does not mean she is not taking Wimbledon seriously. She does not have enough time to practice in grass. That’s the only reason. May be Iga should start practising in grass after WTA finals by skipping WTL exhibition tournament. She can make use of that 2-3 weeks for grass practice. Iga won Junior Wimbledon even though it’s a different ball game. That shows she has potential to go big in grass too. She is just 23. Once she starts winning in grass there is no stopping her. That’s for sure.

Because for most of the season, her fans come on here and start boasting about breadsticks, and bagels and disrespecting her opponents. Maybe if a little humility in defeat was shown then people wouldn't react when she loses. Notice she didn't give much credit to her opponent today, it was more excuses. If you want to play better, then respect the surface and play more matches on it! Everyone else does, it's sheer arrogance to think you can just turn up and win.

Nobody cares about the grass tournaments.. I get it’s a tradition and all but its more symbolic and for the brittish players who are sooo shitty in general on all other surfaces so since they know grass well , they have some chances, and it’s home slam for them. Also, look how many players fell and/or go injured on grass this year… It’s tricky and not worth of any sacrifices

Putincewa lost in 2nd round of Roland Gaross, she had plenty of time to prepare for grass season and she used that time well thats for sure. She is on 8 winning streak on grass. On the other hand Swiatek have won back to back Madrid, Rome, Paris, with Madrid and Paris almost 2 week tournament each. Physically and mentally its like playing 3 grands slams. Only Sabalenka made comparable effort and look how big price she paid for participating in Berlin just week after RO. Her injury is very serious as without serve Sabalenka won't be able to compete on high level. To make matters worse, Olympic Games are just 3 weeks after Wimbledon and they are on clay. Grass-clay switch is the hardest one, its totally different movement. It takes time to build muscle memory , you can not rush otherwise you can injure yourself. Just look what happened in Berlin first warm up grass tournament, Ons, Vondi, Rybakina, Sabalenka - none of them finished healthy and what price they paid at Wimbledon...

Maybe someone should explain to them what her grip on the forehand is which makes it is so difficult for her to adapt to the grass. And it was because of the forheand that she lost yesterday.

There is this push from the media for Iga to get better on grass that I just don’t understand. Even if she was a clay court specialist (which she isn't), there would be nothing wrong with that. Some of the most beloved players of all time like Guga Kuerten or Kim Klijsters ''only'' won Slams one surface and that's not something thats being hold over their heads.

3 Brits throw a tantrum because a 5 Major Champion said she will focus on other aspects of her game. They have forgotten that Little Britain is getting even smaller...

The grass season is incredibly short, and even shorter if you are good enough to make it the finals at Roland Garos when everyone else is running off to some green somewhere. Give Iga some slack!

That's because her whole game is based on being a frontrunner. When she is remotely challenged it all falls apart, the warning signs were there when Osaka nearly beat her on clay.

Two-faced pundits/media. If Iga doesn't win Wimbledon ever in her career, she will still be a massively-great player & the best in her era. The lady said it clearly in 1:30; it is "British bias" that is putting her down. The British just think if you don't win Wimby, you're a shit player. Absolute rubbish!

​@RobSinox Sampras got to the sf, and also won the Australian Open. Swiatek has won two of the grandslams. I think its a bit much to compare her at this stage to Sampras. Her career is more akin to Nadal.

Let her do focus on the surface she comfortable on. Why she must be the best on every surface when you don't expect that from other players? But Iga is a great competitor and a great learner ;) and I personally believe she will figure the grass out eventually but this year was really challenging with Olimpics in a few weeks so this result should not be a shock to you!

Struck by how young all of you are, and that is a compliment from someone twice all of your ages - you all know the game and love the game. Yesterday you were spot on in defending GF of Taylor Fritz, as the criticism of her does have a misogynistic tone to it. She is a successful businesswoman who has a voice and a platform. At the end, 1984 was brought up. In terms of Novak and fans, that NY crowd was totally pro-Connors and anti-McEnroe. As a fellow New Yorker, I always rooted for McEnroe, despite his flaws. Novak has the crowd against him for a simple reason - his on-court behavior is often reprehensible. The crowd was also totally pro-Everett, mostly due to an anti-gay climate against Martina, which was not subtle. The British bias from commentators. They are correct on one thing Iga is one dimensional. She doesn't got much variety in her game.They are biased. I think this is a little bit of an overreaction. She lost her focus during the match and couldn’t regain it, while at the same time her opponent found her focus and started playing very well. - to me this points to mental fatigue, which is different from technique, fitness, and skill. She will win it within the next 3 years.

I generally enjoy your podcast and I am a friend thereof but you sound offended by the possibility that she may not want to win Wimbledon as much as the other slams. Hahaha, there were no Olympics in the previous 4 years and yet she exited in R3 or earlier,last year being the sole exception where she exited in the QF.😂btw,you're wrong about the Olympics, given the choice between a Wimbledon crown or Olympics gold all players would go for the former! I am sure Novak or the tennis world doesn't think he's an inferior player to Murray just because he hasn't won Olympics gold yet while Murray has won two!😅

i honestly don’t think that this has anything to do with ‘priorities’. the technical /physical comes ^first, if you are a player. she struggles to make the adaptations- the takeback has to start *a *lot *earlier on grass (- early preparation bring essential), you have to load quickly to offset irregular bounces …. a lot of features that people that don’t really play are not seeing here. i think that she can do it but it will require a lot more work and belief in herself.

When will you guys realise that SWIATEK cannot cope with a power game , prime examples are Rybakina and Ostapenko , her serve is weak , especially the 2nd serve , her forehand breaks don under pressure , plus whats really start annoy people is the comfort break , Saturday was 7 minutes , and should only be 3 minutes , plus taking her book of instruction .
