Sweep roll vs low brace roll in a C1
Playing with making some canoe rolling instructional videos....turns out talking to a camera is awkward as hell! I will put together some tips and exercises that helped me learn and hopeful get some feedback and advice and also help some people starting out.
This is just a quick demonstration of the differences between a high brace and low brace roll. Even though I am not coming up in a typical "high brace" position kayakers are familiar with, I am using the power face straight from the setup position like a kayak sweep roll. So maybe sweep roll is a better name than kayak or high brace roll. That is followed by just some fun playing around with edges and trying to get vertical.

I learned to roll with a high brace finish. You could come up with a forward stroke in progress. The only time I would use a low brace roll was in a side surf where I wanted to stabilize with the low brace. Great video. Brings me back to my C1 days in my old Giromax.
Great video. As someone who has paddled a kayak for years and just recently have begun to enjoy my c1 I always wondered why no other boaters use a traditional roll. Your point about time underwater makes a great deal of sense. What potential rationale would someone have who advises against a traditional sweep roll in a c1?

It does provide a great deal of leverage (traditional roll). If I find myself carping in squirrelly water I'll often revert to that as a sure way of getting up, especially in circumstances in which a swim would be very bad and I know I'm not likely to hit anything. Example would be boily water or an eddy line at the bottom of a rapid without a shore or gorged out.
What boat is that?
