The way to keep the pair straight is to focus on this basic difference: than is used when you're talking about comparisons; then is used when you're talking about something relating to time. Than is the word to choose in phrases like smaller than, smoother than, and further than.

Jeff Morse Yep, Finnish and estonian are so close that estonian people seem to somewhatnunderstand Finnish, doesnt work vice versa though. some words are close or same but with different meanings. for example Linna in Finnish is a castle, but in estonian it means city or a town. piimä in finnish is sour milk but in estonian it's milk. Hungarian is a whole different story though.

hkistreet Karelian, for example, is one ;). I think it's even closer to Finnish than Estonian. Finns (atleast I do) understand the meaning of the sentences but there might be a word here or there that they dont understand. It seems to ease it a little if you try to read it out loud.

Swedes can cheat a bit in Finnish though. Finnish has 4000-5000 loaned words from Swedish, so for example "wait" is "odota", but you can also say "venttaa" (pronounced exactly like "vänta"). Or "yes" is "kyllä" but you can also say "joo/jaa", though "jaa" is more of an "ok then" than a normal "yes"

Swedish is closely related to Danish and Norwegian languages, as well as distantly related to Icelandic (and also to Dutch, mainly via the Low German of the medieval Hansa Leauge). Finnish is another world entirely, linguistically speaking. However, Swedish people designed the Finnish writing system in the 1500s (that's why they have å,ä,ö) and there were plans to make Finnish one of the official languages in the old greater Sweden before Sweden lost Finland to Russia in 1809.

If you learn Swedish, you will automatically know Norwegian and quite a bit of Danish at the same time just as a little bonus. Those languages are that close to each other. Finnish, on the other hand, is something completely different.
