It could, although you'd have to stay well away from enemy tanks, RPG's, mortars and ATGM's. This wouldn't be the kind of tank you would use for infantry fire support in an advance to contact against dug-in enemy forces. However, in well-camouflaged and defiladed defensive positions, the IkV91 could pack a wallop against unsuspecting advancing enemy infantry and wheeled/tracked infantry fighting vehicles.

Even against an enemy like Russia, we would enjoy major advantages in an all-out confrontation: 1. Production capacity. Numerous large automotive plants equals huge tank building potential. As long as we get Norwegian oil, we could flood all of Asia with tanks. 2. Technological know-how. An example: Swedish stealth subs can go where ever they want and do as they please. 3. Inaccessibility of terrain. Sweden provides few advantages to an aggressor but plenty to a defender.

They're basically infantry support vehicles. When I was in the army, infantry brigades had a couple of anti-tank companies. Exactly how many and what composition depended on the exact type of brigade, but it was a combination of tracked and motorized anti-tank. The ikv 91 was organized in the tracked anti-tank units and were often used as the brigade's rapid reaction force due to its high off-road speed and mix of HE and HEAT. The could also be used to reinforce the infantry battalions of the brigade or cover the flanks.

@matador5135 Snort! In the swedish army they were called "rain proof". the vehicle can take 20mm AP in the front, and rifle fire on the sides and rear. It is designed to cross terrain impassable to other vehicles in order to flank and ambush tanks and convoys, or give fire support to infantry. If it gets hit by anything remotely tank-sized all is over . If used properly, they were very, very good.

The light armor was not that big of a deal since the Soviets at the time were not big on auto-cannons and had virtually nothing between 14,5 mm heavy machine guns and 10 cm tank cannons. Getting protection against full on tank cannons would make the vehicle so heavy that you might just get a MBT instead.

Mount and defence against RPG's, like an updated Sovjet Arena, add an autoloading system, gyro stabilised main & coax guns, modern sights and bring this vehicle back. Why drive around in cities like Baghdad with 70 ton veichles like M1 Abrams and Leo 2 when a 16 tons vehicle with active protection is enough? And don't talk about IED, IED needs to be found before driving onto them, it's make little got to have a vehicle that could survive an IED because the enemy simply make bigger IEDs.

And our modern stealth corvettes for example lack both anti ship and anti air missiles, their armament currently consists of a 57 mm gun. And we may have difficult terrain but due to the small size of our armed forces an invader could conquer large parts of the country without facing much resistance at all.

    1. No APHE, HEAT or HE 2. Designed in the 60s and has since long been retired from service. 3. Why are you comparing it to modern MBTs with high pressure smoothbores? It was mostly meant as a Swedish version of the PT-76, but with a higher capability in the anti armor and infantry support role. A low pressure main gun was selected to keep weight down as HEAT was considered effective enough against the IFVs and T-55s of the standard Soviet Motor Rifle divisions, and it was still a good upgrade over (or complement to) towed 90mm recoilless guns otherwise used by the mechanized infantry.

@scholion And what tanks should we produce? We haven't developed an indigenous tank for half a century, the ones were using today are German which means we would need a license from Germany to build more of them. But this is irrelevant anyway since if Russia were to invade us we would have to do with what we have now, we won't really have much time to produce anything once the war starts.
