This flatpicking guitar lesson is on the traditional tune “Swallowtail Jig” and one I think you’re really going to enjoy. It’s in 6/8 time which gives it that “Irish” type feel and has become a staple in the Bluegrass world. I’ll put a couple links below so you can hear this song in context.
Take your time with this and pay close attention to the down up pick directions. This song is not the most complicated tune out there but it can be tricky especially when you’re first learning it. Make sure you learn it note for note and try to play it from memory. If you practice this tune fairly consistently, you should get this one under your thumb in no time!
The last thing I’d like to mention about this song or “Jigs” in general is the power that these type of tunes have when played in a live scenario. If everyone in a group knows how to play it correctly, something truly magical happens to the musicians and crowd. The feeling you get is electric!
