I was there for that race. My sister Patti Cooksey rode # 12 So Vague, only the second woman in the Derby.

Aww Swale, I still remember I was 8 years old and this horse captured my heart. I cried like a baby when they said he was gone.

The horse that started my love of the sport. I remember jumping up and down cheering him on as a kid. Great memories.

My first derby pick was on Gate Dancer. First derby winner was Unbridled. Most recent derby winner Mage!

Swale's run was far too short. A great homegrown champion for Claiborne Farms. I remember the great black colt. Being from Louisville, I know his story. I've seen his grave in Lexington, almost straight across from the incomparable Secratariat....

I remember watching this Kentucky Derby race at the now closed Caliente Racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico.

May well have been Slew's best son.....he left all too soon!! What could have been.....

On Saturday May 5, 1984 Patricia Cooksey became the second female jockey to ride a Kentucky Derby. She finished 11th with So Vague, trained by G.M. Russell. First female jockey in a Kentucky Derby was Diane Crump in 1970; she rode Fathom arriving 15th. place in a 17 horses field. Best regards from Venezuela.

Swale best fit horse at the time. Ran one morning in practice and after Swale fell backwards and died. Too young! Gone but not Forgotten 💙 He had just been hosed off a cool bath. Very , very sad death. Nothing to do with his heart. All I know is he was the most physically strongest horse at this time.

Physically it was his heart condition that took his life. They did an autopsy and that's when they found out he had heart problems.

You rarely see that easy of victory in the Derby, with so many horses entered.

Althea what a super race...daughter of the GIANT Alydar, she ran a great race and deserved to win.

I was a work directly across from his barn when he had a heart attack and died sad day

ahh, damn, if only the greatest filly ever had lived, Ruffian, and the most gorgeous and fast Swale had lived, can you just imagine if the two of them had a foal? Both gone way too soon at age 3 :'(

1984 Kentucky Derby was Mike Smith's debut in Run for the Roses. He would win 21 years later aboard Giacomo, trained by John Shirrefs.

His biggest win was in 2018 with Justify and I think you know the rest the story

I had $10 to win on him here. A year earlier Devil's Bag had scratched out of a stakes won by Swale, the "weaker" half of the entry at 5-2.

+b soz I think he was just having heart trouble already in the Preakness which would explain his fading like he did. Maybe the most beautiful horse I have ever seen.

This was my 6th of 7 derbys attended. Horrible call.

I think he was just worked to hard for a young horse, or maybe they gave him "speed" drugs! No horse should be ridden until 3 years old. The Kentucky Derby and races should be at 5 years old, so there bones are strong. Starting horses at 2 years old, when there bones are fragile causes to many break downs! It'll never change, but it should! It's all about greed & $$$!!!😪

A statement issued by the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Science, where extended tests had been run on samples and organs from Swale's body, said that an area of fibrosis on his heart had been discovered in recent days.

@@onion6foot from what i know.. he had a heart attack. fibrosis on the heart is a scarring tissue.

Mike Battaglia = worst Derby announcer since 1980s.
