Largo with 2/2*. It is faster than the mainstream. Rubinstein plays it at the correct speed

According to Wikipedia Hans von Bulow called this prelude "suffocation" and Richter conveyed this so well - I felt my breathing was restricted as I listened to it.

Cortot does take the tempo quicker, but he does that to give some space to slow it down at certain parts. But to each their own. Happy listening :)

Richter was 6 years younger than me when this was recorded, but so much deeper and more profound. He speaks straight to my heart and soul. I have listened to this hundreds of times an it still brings out tears. I can only imagine what the Polish audience felt in his concert after enduring a horrible war just a decade prior and losing their family members and friends.

Переслушал многих интерпретаторов: все пианисты меркнут в сравнении с Рихтером! Это наилучшее, самое глубокое прочтение данной прелюдии, Святослав Рихтер - эпоха, не просто пианист. И даже случайный зацеп 5-м пальчиком соседней клавиши никак не повлиял на общее впечатление и образование слёз на глазах…

Chopin is not my favourite composer, but gosh, hasn't Richter hit me with this one! Truly majestic! I think composers like Chopin shouldn't be over-dramatized, and played very simply, like this prelude. Because all the drama is already in the music, no need to pump it up.

I totally agree with you. I just listened to a version by Martha Argerich and in my opinion she overstates the emotion and makes it too flashy. Richter is right on the money.

@@johnpiettro4644 To totally agree with you. Martha exaggerates a lot. It is a 'song' on the lover's grave according to the author's note. So, it is up to the person how to behave in the graveyard. I would be quiet and mourning rather than screaming.

Лучшая трактовка...Минимум отклонений от темпа, благородная сдержанность ,некоторая даже аскетичность, а чувствуешь сдавленный крик от рвущейся выплеснуться скорби.... И на этом фоне пронзительное всеобъемлющее умиротворение...Рихтер - эталон.

It is a difficult piece, you cannot hide behind acrobatics or a mass of notes. You are "naked" and have to show the world how you manage the expression and the touch. Listen at their Prelude 4 and you will know how is the musicality of the pianist.

Забавно... Есть простые вещи, которые чрезвычайно сложно сыграть так, чтоб зацепило. Играю эту прелюдию и никак не могу нащупать баланс. Послушал многих исполнителей - все не то. Рихтер как всегда не подвел. Это именно то "перфекто", именно та интерпретация, которую я хотел услышать.

I could say " this demonstrate that also legendary musicians are human and can fail... " but in this particular case (IMHO) the dissonance even increases the atmosphere. My conclusion is that if Richter could make art also from mistakes probably he was not human; he was from celestial breed....

Of other versions, I like this best. There is a very subtle "swing" to the tempo with the left hand, which nearly gives it a Jazz feel. I can hear a slight brush stroke played softly on a drum and even a restrained acoustic Bass with this piece if it were adapted for Jazz musicians. Masterpiece. Richter conveys the intense emotion....sorrow, longing, emptiness perhaps in this piece of music. Chopin rules!

exactly.This brush. And the tempo like out of the 8 octas the first two are slow and then like gravity kicks and 3-6 faster and again 7-8 slow.. Like a constant denial. start -stop in each sentence. Amazing

I could say " this demonstrate that also legendary musicians are human and can fail... " but in this particular case (IMHO) the dissonance even increases the atmosphere. My conclusion is that if Richter could make art also from mistakes probably he was not human; he was from celestial breed....

Of other versions, I like this best. There is a very subtle "swing" to the tempo with the left hand, which nearly gives it a Jazz feel. I can hear a slight brush stroke played softly on a drum and even a restrained acoustic Bass with this piece if it were adapted for Jazz musicians. Masterpiece. Richter conveys the intense emotion....sorrow, longing, emptiness perhaps in this piece of music. Chopin rules!

exactly.This brush. And the tempo like out of the 8 octas the first two are slow and then like gravity kicks and 3-6 faster and again 7-8 slow.. Like a constant denial. start -stop in each sentence. Amazing

...a volte vedi nel Tempo - come si possa fermare per un solo istante e mai più ripetersi la scintilla dell'Eterno. Questa esecuzione live (1954) offre l'Irripetibile. Ho ascoltato centinaia di interpretazioni. Nessuno è sceso nel gorgo come Richter in questa pagina.
The tune is simply ineffable. I am pretty sure that it was used in the soundtrack to a Jimmy Cagney movie called 'Man of a Thousand Faces' a biopic of Lon Chaney.
Sokolov version's stupendous, eloquent. Richter's pedestrian to compare, too pensive.
Nice, but he missed the tone once. Well, nobody is perfect.
I love Richter but honestly think this interpretation is too slow. I prefer the recording with Martha Argerich.

+Sarah Nyberg Pergament I emphatically agree. Her interpretation is the best I've heard. Far more dynamic, and tells a much more detailed story.
