in lot's of Chopin's Nocturnes, it's meant to feel ad lib. or "at your own liberty" so as that each pianist can add his or her own grace to the piece. Personally when i play this piece, i prefer a darker more intense feeling and so i'll add some speed to the 16th note runs you'll occasionally hear, but back off quite a bit in the mid section of the piece so as to bring the sweetness of the notes out. It's a bittersweet thing that each pianist has.

Gilels plays Scarlatti while Richter neglects Scarlatti. Artur Rubinstein said to say someone is the greatest pianist is an unreasonable statement. Horowitz had some technical aspects he could not solve. Simon Barere exceeded Rachmaninov and Hofmann in some ways while Rachmaninov and Hofmann proclaimed each other to be the greatest living pianist of that time. Tausig, Rosenthal, and Godowsky excelled Liszt in certain techniques. Each great pianist has something others don't have but also lack something others have.

stefinlithuania It's good to read about all pianists written by Harold C. Schonberg, David Dubal, and etc. and see how those critics refer to those pianists born for the Golden Era of Piano. However, it's even better to listen to them all, make comparisons, and avoid saying who is the best. Richter is a second generation student of Godowsky via Neuhaus. A good comparison would be compare Richter's recordings of Bach with those of Backhaus, Busoni, Gieseking, Fischer, d'Albert, and Karl Richter... just to mention a few giants before him.
