Happened to find your channel randomly a few days ago. I haven’t stopped watching , the scenery , the daily happenings. So awesome. Hi Grim.
You live a magickal and fascinating life my dear girl ! In my humble opinion it's like a faerie tale. I do realize you face hardships, but you've presented this in a way to allow us to see the BEST parts. Seasons greetings once again from Arizona. 💜🎄🎀
So glad I found this channel. I read a couple of books about Svalbard during lockdown, but your videos are so much more informative. I’ve promised myself I will visit one day.
Enjoy your videos as it brings back memories of previous visits. We've been to Svalbard twice for somewhat short stays and found the location to be very special. Nothing like relaxing with a cup of coffee at Rabalder, exploring the town shops and museums and learning about life in a challenging polar environment. We were also able to get to Gruvelageret for a terrific dinner.

I hear you! I too am a warm weather person but something about this cold and dark lifestyle is very soothing..... IF I don't have to feel the actual cold! You have to be young to be able to shovel all that snow without having heart failure. I enjoy being an armchair traveller.
I was there in July 2007 for a few days with my father and my maternal grandfather for a short cruise with the small, old Hurtigruten ship "Nordstjernen" (back then Nordstjernen was still in regular Hurtigruten service in winter, cruising Svalbard in summer). This was a magical experience - letting the sun shine in my face from far up in the sky in the middle of the night, surrounded by glaciers, sipping a beer on deck of the ship, and it was my birthday! Extremely memorable. I'm sure that the perpetual night sky in winter is equally fascinating as the sun staying up for 24 hours a day in summer, and indeed would like to visit Svalbard in winter at some point in the future. Actually, I could well imagine living there (doesn't seem to be more expensive than it's here in Switzerland anyway ;-) ), but I suppose that the demand for (Swiss) German-speaking librarians with mediocre English and near-zero knowledge of Norwegian is very limited...
That soft spoken intro with absolutely marvelous views is a masterpiece! I really like the way your videos are evolving, Cecilia 👍 Fluffy co-hosts stole the q&a 😍

When she said it's expensive to live there my heart dropped... until she said $700/month. I live in New York City, and the closest I got to that was when I lived with two roommates and paid $800/month, and that was ONLY because we got lucky with Covid prices. Needless to say, I want to move to Svalbard. Also- I just paid $6.50 for a carton of oat milk :/

@@le_th_ I was being sarcastic, +300 USD for a barn in the middle of nothing, with no elec and running water... That's way too much money, just like the container houses in Svalbard. For that price you can still get something nice, like a studio in Thailand, with a view on the beach, gym and pool included or a loft in Chile surrounded by mountains. I guess the property market in Svalbard is quite small, the island is very remote hence the high cost of rent. Prices in the US sound just like a nightmare.

Cecilia- Love your videos. Just a few questions: 1) How in the world does anyone make a living up there, especially people like yourself who moved threre in recent years. 2) How is it that you can get a WiFi signal in such a remote location? 3) What is the culture like in the village near you? 4) How does the village feel about you promoting Svalbard to people all over the world. For years my family and close friends enjoyed meeting up in the summer at a remote campground in Montana. Then an article came out raving about the great fly fishing there. The massive influx of tourists ruinded the whole area Now it's like parking in an urban RV park. Tourism can bring in money, but it can destroy the culture and the appeal and beauty of a rural environment. It sure did so in my home town in Alaska. I wish you well, though. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I moved up here for a job as a booking manager at one of the locations in town, and then after that moved on to some other jobs :) I now work at a school, a clothing store and as a photographer/videographer. We have fiber here on Svalbard, drawn from the mainland with optic fiber cable, so we have high speed internet here. We also have the mobile phone carrier telenor's mast very close to our house haha We already have a lot of tourism (pre covid) during our high season so I think people just enjoy that I am spreading the word about Svalbard a bit more. A lot of people have businesses that rely on tourism and are struggling right now :/ There are a lot of rules around tourism here and protecting the wildlife so I hope it won't ever get out of hand 😊

I take it the cost of living is very high where you live. I had a friend who lived and worked in Iqaluit, Nunavut in Canada and his salary was twice or more what he would have earned as a teacher in Toronto. While he was there the cost of one head of lettuce was $10. What would a head of lettuce and fresh tomatoes or bananas cost where you live? What would the average income be for a teacher or government worker or construction or research person be where you live? Income averages are needed to relate to your prices. Thanks so much for you vlog, you provide an insight into a land 650 km from the North Pole which is a very unique perspective. Thanks.
