Offroad on the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Suzuki rarely makes big promises or extravagant claims.
It's a conservative company that sometimes loses its messaging behind the louder voices in the market.
With the V-Strom 800DE Suzuki has something exciting on its hands and we spent a few amazing days exploring on the new mid-size adventure tourer.
But is it really a V-Strom anymore?
The gear that got us there:

I tested the offroad riding 890 Adventure with Apex suspension(2023 so now fully adjustable) and I must admit that the 800DE suspension works better. Weight distribution is true, but the Vstrom is still exceptionally agile. If I add Japanese durability versus "ready to race", I chose Suzuki.

The 890 looks a bit funky for me. The norton 901 looks great but pretty pricey. Suzuki seems to check a lot of boxes for a good price.

Agree - the DE suspension is better than Apex. And the gearbox is worlds better than the Husky offers.

Evidently, this video was before CFMoto introduced you to the art of icing your groin. Good to see that the tank could help out. I really love these videos - your presentation style is just so authentic and hilarious and your observations are on point. Test rode the V strom today and I wanted to hate it but I loved it. It is insanely good??? The T7 needs to look out.

Now that's a proper review! Honestly placing it in its category but also showing how a rider with advanced skills can make it rip (I don't possess those skills). It's so hard to beat Japanese reliability and, really, how many riders can take a bike to its suspension limits when on an ADV ride? As to your campground "friends" -- if you knew the Texas Two-step you would have danced the night away!

Typical Aussie, too funny! Really enjoyed your review, you're making a strong case for replacing my 2022 CB500X with an 800DE rather than a Transalp XL750. The weight of the bike is a bit off putting, but not a total deal breaker. Having said all that, I'm going to keep learning on my CB500X for a couple more years, only getting a new bike once I've earned the right to a proper ADV bike! At 53, the learning curve for off pavement riding is definitely steeper than it would have been 30 years ago. Why didn't I ride dirt bikes when I was younger?!

@@advlife The CB500X is an under appreciated bike, glad to hear you think it's decent! It's just unfortunate that it doesn't have more clearance and a better suspension, but it's fully understandable that, as a budget ADV bike, that wasn't in the cards. When the time comes, it's going to be hard to part with my CB500X, but I only have room for one bike in my garage and I'm not buying a bigger house just to accommodate more bikes! However, if I win the lottery I will definitely rethink that :-)

Suzi is winning so far ... but should I wait for CF Moto 450MT in a few months ... 🤔🤔🤔. I'd really appreciate your comments on real world fuel usage ... I know the Suzi had this in the display. I'd choose the Yamaha on a straight up aggressive offroad ride, but I find the Suzuki more appropriate for the 90% of riding I do that isn’t balls out in the dirt. Depends on how and where you ride and which one makes you want to ride it the most. My personal preference? Tuareg, V-Strom and T7. I'm not saying one is better than the other - that's just how my garage would look if it was my choice.

A guy I know of has had problems plus if you look on the forums or even KZread you can read that lots of people are having issues, to be fair most are not major although one that keeps cropping up is the bike just cutting out whilst on the move? Electrical probably as when the ignition switch is cycled most bikes just restart fine?. One other I don’t like is the engine warning light that keeps on illuminating for no apparent reason 🤷‍♂️. It’s a shame as the bike it’s self is excellent.

can confirm, the bike can easily lose 20+lb with a full exhaust. If you delete evap, lithium battery it's probably 35+lb down on the stock bike. Not a lot of options for full exhaust at the moment tho. The arrow titanium collector+can is like 1300-1400. just a slip on can save over 10lb tho.

I really like everything about this new Suzuki Vstrom 800 …… except the colour options . All 3 look absolutely horrendous. There isn’t even one option that I could settle for and say “I guess I could live with that”. You gotta like looking at your bike .. and with the colour choices they gave us, I just can’t do it . Such a shame, because otherwise it looks to be a fantastic bike

hmmmm; you make what seems a compelling case for the Suzuki which i had not even considered. saying it's better than the T7 is interesting seeing how so many rave about it; would you say the Suzuki is as comfortable as an R1200GS in the saddle? did you really say 125Kmh top speed?....Great productions by the way...anyone'd think you have a whole camera crew with ya.

  • @advlife

The T7 is a better offroad option but it's not as comfortable and not as good in a tourer role as the 800DE. Comparing it to the R1200GS is tricky given they feel so different. But from memory the 800DE has a lower seat height and for me its easy to get both feet on the ground. The GS seat migt be a little better but you a lot more for that small margin. The GS does have better wind protection though. The 800DE definetly goes beyond 125kph top speed.

I still can't believe that they've built a ride by wire, big bore all road tourer and it doesn't have cruise control. BTW, the algorithm threw you up in my feed with the 450MT launch, and that was great, this video is even better, subscribed. PPS, this is very much like how and where I ride, as I live 40 minutes from Long Flat, and I recognised the valley and the twisty uphill drone shot.

  • @advlife

    @advlife

    4 ай бұрын

Definitely test ride both. the Norden is better for more aggressive offroad riding through the lighter feel, balance of the drop down tanks and it has cruise control which is always nice. The Suzuki has a more exciting engine and much better feeling gearbox. The suspension is pretty comparable but the V-Strom might be slightly better IMO.

@@RugerM77 It is extremely bright. Unfortunately there is almost no coverage. The low beam looks like a horizontal light saber. It's 40' wide, 2' tall and has a cut off so sharp you could shave with it. The high beam is just as bad. At a distance of about 30', the pattern is 3'x3'. It does not fill-in the low beam. Again, the cut off is so sharp you could shave with it.

@@JayBee-cr8jm I am currently considering buying a 800DE or a Tuareg 660. I was wondering if the headlights were good on the 800 due to their small size in relation to the proportions of the bike. I guess you’d have to add auxiliary lights. I commute a lot to work in the dark and I need to be able to see (my eyes are not getting any better as I get older).

  • @JayBee-cr8jm

@@RugerM77 I absolutely love the bike. To put that into actual context, I also owned a new 2013 Triumph Tiger 800XC, a new '09 DR650 and a new 2016 Versys 1000. I put 30k miles on the DR650, 52k miles on the Tiger and 50k miles on the Versys. The V-Strom 800DE is by far the best of the bunch. It's only short coming is the headlight. I believe the headlights could work with better optics/reflectors. I don't see that happening though since they are one piece and the "bulb" is non-replaceable. It's literally printed on a circuit. The aftermarket is somewhat shallow for these bikes but is growing by the day. I suspect by spring, if not sooner, many solutions will be available for it. I just think that folks should be aware of this issue before taking the plunge. Not everyone wants to disassemble a new bike, add $300+ in "accessory" bars and $500+ in fog-lights so they can commute to work. I never considered the Aprilia. The tubeless wheels and cruise sure are nice. It's not a lot more than the Suzuki either. Italian reliability concerns me. Good luck with whatever you go with.
