Suzuki V-Strom 650 | Never Again!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As a motorcycle rider, you know how important it is to lubricate and maintain your motorcycle chain to ensure a smooth and trouble- free ride. I should have known better than to over lube the chain on my V-Strom 650 with gear oil. A little goes a long way! Never again will I make this mistake! (Hopefully)
I wish the Suzuki V-Strom 650 had a shaft drive! Maybe in the future it will?

Merry Christmas! I'm glad you made it through that ride safely. I was amazed that it cost you so much to fill your tank. That's some expensive fuel. Stay safe, and thanks for sharing your adventures with us. A very happy New Year to you.

O ring chains do not need oil use a silicone lubricant. Your chain is packed with grease within, keep er between the ditches!

Thanks for the tip. I know that the O-ring chains have grease in them but the outside of the chain makes contact with the sprocket causing premature wear if it is not lubricated. What type of silicone spray to you recommend? Take care and ride safe out there.

Fortnine on utube has a video about chain lube he’s a good source! I like to use a dry lube it stays put doesn’t attract dirt, just keep it clean. Main cause wear is greasy sprocket and chain I clean mine with brake cleaner and spray it with dry lubricant or silicone both work well. Like your videos well thought out no b.s.

You're never too old to ride your VStrom. Probably the most forgiving bike on the planet, as you know. At least you know your traction control works nicely. My XT Adventure is sitting in the foyer. Been there for over a month. Idaho sucks for riding. Too cold and icy in the winter and too hot and buggy in the summer. Been here 40 years and ready to move somewhere I can ride all year long. Just bought a new Harley 117ci and still would keep the DL if it came down to it. Safe riding.

I agree the V-Strom is a very forgiving motorcycle and the riding position is also a nice neutral position which makes long distance touring very comfortable. Also the wee strom is super reliable which is one of the main reasons why I own one. I have a friend who just moved to Idaho. I thought the riding in the summer would be great but your comment makes me think twice. Your new Harley sounds great! Stay safe out there.

As much as I'm a big fan of the 650 Vtwin I've always wondered why Suzuki didn't use the fantastic Burgman parallel 650 engine in the 'strom. Maybe that is what the 800 is based upon now? Great track record on Suzuki motorcycles yet so under rated.

Owning a DL1000XAL8, I'm not sure I would consider a DL650 a bug-out vehicle. I just use WD-40 to clean, then use a rag to remove all but a sheen on the chain to keep it from rusting between cleans. Been doing that for nearly 50 years on o-ring chains without issue. I know people swear by gear oil, but it's just a messy mistake if the chain is an o-ring.

The title is a bit misleading - there was nothing much about riding a V-Strom 650, and all about over-oiling a chain. Go and get a R1250GS like I did and never look back.

Sweet bike but wanted something little bigger for some adventures I want to try his year. BTW…I’m in southern Utah…where are you located? Like your vids! Happy New Year! Oh.. also…I need a good skid plate. Any suggestions??

Excellent choice. Had a white 3rd gen '17 , now a '22 XT Adventure. All in all out of my bikes, which most are more powerful and full of tech, the DL is still the one, especially on long trips. The 650 engine is anvil tough and doesn't ask for much. Love this bike. Enjoy yours. As to the skid plate, Outback Motortek makes one of the best- crash bars too.

Sounds like you should've turned around shortly after you started having that many problems. Sometimes the road gods are telling you "not today". Also, if you don't go off road you can also consider a belt driven bike instead of a shaft drive. They do sell a conversion kit for the V-Strom but then you might not have as much luck selling it without converting back.

Too much oil getting on the rear tire? Do a bit of off roading on dirt to eliminate or at least reduce the amount of oil. With "O" Ring chains not much lube is needed.
