Suzuki V-Strom 250 Review | Small but perfectly formed

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Suzuki V-strom 250 is an interesting bike, all the advantages that a adventure bike brings but only 250 cc?
I was lucky enough to be invited to the European launch and here are my first thoughts and impressions of Suzuki's latest little adventure bike.

Had this bike for a year and it was a blast!! It was not fast but it was easy to ride, reliable and fun!! For me the best adventure/ touring bike for starters. Just sold it and now ready to buy the 650 vstrom... you cannot go wrong with Suzuki..

OK I have read all of the comments so here are my thoughts. I purchased this Vstrom a week ago and so far the bike is performing well. Not able to get the most out of it as I am running it in but for what I use it for it works well. I am 6ft 2in tall and have loads of room. It rides smoothly and for commuting is ideal. Here in NZ our Highway top speed is just 100kmh and the bike handles this with ease. It has plenty of spare oomph for a gentle overtake but you wouldn't want to attempt a truck overtake unless you planned it well. Having said that I had no issues overtaking large trucks with minimal wobble due to the weight. Yes the bike could be lighter but the trade off is that this bike is very stable and holds its own in cross winds. I have ridden many bikes of all sizes over the past 30 years and feel that this bike is a great commuter with the ability to handle gravel roads and the odd bump without stressing the rider out. It handles the daily grind in traffic with ease and as a bike that looks bigger than it is stands out more making it visible to others. Lets get real here this bike is aimed at people like me who want a small cc commuter who at times takes the odd trip to the coast or down a few gravel roads. I plod along but keep up with the traffic flow with ease and don't want to lean right over into the corners like the 'old days'. The weight as I see it is a massive positive as it makes the bike very stable. At the lights in town I have no issues getting away quickly! So by all means wish for an extra 200 cc or a little less weight, sure that would elevate this bike to another level, but for what this bike is I for one think it is great for a learner or a returner to biking or like me just a 53 year old who wants a cheap to run with a bit of fun thrown in commuter.

What is your problem with overtaking? Trucks almost the world over are limited to around 100 kph, and even less in some countries, yet you say you "wouldn't want to attempt a truck overtake unless you planned it well". This bike EASILY has the power to overtake a truck and will do so more quickly than 95% of normal cars on the road. ALL overtakes require planning !! You do not need 750 cc to overtake.

@@fingerhorn4 Seriously that's what you took from the reply! Cars are also set speed limits but do they stick to them! Yes over here trucks are meant to stay at 90kmh but do they! no they don't. My comments clearly state the bike has decent highway performance but the instant, get out of trouble acceleration, from 90kmh to above that, is not there as it would be on a larger bike. Of course ALL overtakes need thought my point is on this bike once you commit and end up in that blind spot you wont have the instant additional get out of trouble acceleration you might need, so plan ahead and all will be fine. New Zealand Highways are nearly all single lane and as such attempting an overtake of a truck going 100kmh into oncoming traffic requires thought.

george linington thanks for your fantastic views on this bike. I visited NZ last year and I completely understand what you mean about overtaking. I own the crf250l rally and it would be the same story if I rode that in your beautiful country.

I own a ktm duke 390 it's not meant for touring but I do as it's quite cheap here in india. I shouldn't complain about this but the bike is uncomfortable over multi day trips, I got bad sore butt at the end of a 7 day riding trip. We have a home brand called Hero , I'm considering between the hero's xpulse 200 is very cheap Suzuki will probably be twice or thrice the price of hero's .

Great review . So many people commenting r missing the mark . This bike is built in India a 3rd world country without the roads of the west to really accommodate more power and speed . It would b great for us in the west 350 to 500 cc out of one of these , but at 500 just get a 650 . This bike at 250 is also great for beginners , shorter, smaller riders ,women to begin riding . Thanks for the great review big fun .

I think it's brilliant that Suzuki have brought out these smaller but affordable bikes for A2 License holders and anyone down sizing i did think about a 250 vstrom when they first announced them but i like my little CBR250R brilliant little bike wouldn't mind going up to Haselmere and having a little go myself.

It would be great to have a look at this bike, but it's not in Canada yet. Hopefully it will be soon. I saw an article on Autocar India that said the company that makes the 250 engine could be making a 300cc version. They have applied for a patent. Maybe the Vstrom will make it here as a 300. Enjoyed your review.

I raced a Suzuki X7 250cc as a teenager 1979/80, it weighted 144kg, 30hp and was really fun to ride fast. As an older guy now I was looking at the new V-Strom 250 to enjoy a light weight comfortable reasonably priced bike. This bike is listed as a single cylinder. and 167kg curb mass on the New Zealand distributors website.

I think its not a bad looker, as far as these modern bikes go. I have a 1980s Honda xl250s, and for the money they want for one of these, i see little point in upgrading. Its almost as heavy as my Honda 650 Revere, but trying to lug that weight with only 25hp. The Kawasaki 300X looks like the best compromise small package with regards weight and power, i think the Suzuki looks better, but having a bigger engine and a bit more poke certainly would help, unless this is really aimed at first time riders. Honda 500X seems to have set a bit of a benchmark with performance and economy. I rode across Europe on a 250xl 30 years ago, and sitting on a motorway with the throttle on the stop gets old real fast, modern motors and oils are great, but still, 8000rpm for hours on end would do my head in.

See many comment about the weight, and comparing to bigger bike, what they dont realize is any bike has a weight to it, then going up engine size doesn't add alot more weight, When a Sinnis Terrain 125cc is only 14kg lighter than the DL250 you soon realize its not that heavy

I tried it out and even at 1,9m tall (6,2ft) its pretty comfy bike with good ergonomics, which is actually weird thing but I like its narrow tank and ergos more . It fits me better than the bigger Stroms It could be slightly more powerful and have a bigger suspension travel, while maintaining the same low seat hight( more like Versys 300X but with lower flatter seat) So 10-15more hp and 15-20 kg less would be perfect..

  • @ripmax333
    @ripmax3333 жыл бұрын

I think the greatest draw of this bike is its weight. 25hp are ok for a 250cc and its great asset is the seat height. Short enough that be enjoyed by many riders, but at 188kg is a bit too much. If it was at least 150kg it would be ok.

I agree it’s a bit heavy but that makes it more planted & stable on the road .At around 85 mph top speed thats about the same as the old Honda 250 superdream twin 3 valve head ,the Kwacka Scorpion & the old Suzuki GS 250 from the 1980’s that hadn’t been strangled by EURO 4 & crap unleaded juice or catted exhaust pipes & PAIR systems & pipes & clean air gubbins .So all in all a good machine & enough real world performance about 80% of the time what a larger bike is capable or is doing in the real world on public roads .

I was looking into this one but I find it waaaaay too expensive for its price (at least in my region) and not much of a competition against something like a Yamaha tenere 250, though I do have to admit, the ABS, the instrumentation (and its GENIOUS day/shade transitions) are absolutely amazing, it's like a miniature 650/1000, and its price drives me towards getting a 650 xt instead.

Hi there, a really great review thanks. Is it the camera or were you all really riding fast? I am glad you mentioned the suspension, because our roads in the UK are shocking. Some questions for you please. 1: How do you think a 6' 2" (me) rider would fair, would it be a little cramped? 2: Can you fit alternative luggage because i noticed that the bike has attachment points for suzuki luggage? 3: I think it would be a great commuter and weekend tourer if you avoid the motorways. What do you think to this point? 4: You mentioned that power is a little lacking. Around where i live (Southport) the limits are 20mph, 50mph on a dual carriageway (with speed cameras) and really, it is impossible to get anywhere is a hurry. Is the power really an issue? I look forward to your reply. Mark

Luggage I think you need the suzuki items as they will fit the bike and yes perfect for commuting 😎

The 650 Vstrom is heavy and relatively high centre of gravity for those under 5 feet 8 inches. I sold mine as it was just too heavy and high for my height. In all other respects it is a great bike. I wish Suzuki had made this 250cc slightly lighter and slightly more powerful for better cruise speed. Also those hideous V STROM decals are beyond awful and naff.

Nice bike but I disagree that it's a bargain given that it's made in China and no doubt like the 300 Versys (that first I saw in the Philippines ,really liked and WAS a bargain, then was introduced here an eye-watering £2000 dearer which isn't) it's sold much cheaper in Asia. 5 grand for a basic runabout, however nice, isn't a bargain.

Doing your A2 license? Had a '15 vstrom with a throttle restrictor, absolutely loved it, I wanted more power within a month but it's enough to have fun on. My advice would be get the 650, you'll 100% get bored of the 250 way too quickly. The other option is the cb500x, same weight as this 250 but you get the full 47bhp. Not sure what the laws are on what bikes you can restrict now as it's changed since I did my A2 just over 2 years ago, but if you can still restrict the 650 do that :)

I reckon even with just 25hp, there is scope for changing sprockets to gain a bit more speed, or lower revs at 70mph. I heard they top out around 85mph, and 70mph was no problem to maintain........till you add some luggage!

Good review. Good bike but I would never buy a motorcycle with massive, hideous, advertising V S T R OM decals on the front. Naff, tasteless, garish, tawdry and ostentatious. If Suzuki removed them or they were strippable decals then maybe. However, you say this bike has luggage options: at £4,500 for the bare bike this means you are up to £5,500 with a couple of panniers or top box plus decent screen/tyres and additions. That make this bike ludicrously over-priced for a modest, way overweight 250 cc machine. In real terms this machine is almost twice what a 250 cc cost 15 years ago. Bike manufacturers are taking the micky. Why are you bike journalists not speaking out against these total rip offs? BTW in the UK dollars equal pounds as far as motorcycles are concerned. Why are we paying 33% more for our motorcycles compared with the US?

Yep I thought it might be a bit heavy but in reality it is a bonus as a commuter who does a few km's om 100kmh roads it is a bonus. It keeps the bike stable and allows it not to be blown all over the road. I have had the bike for a month now and done a mix of country rides, highways and daily city commute. Highways, well yep if you are going to be doing hours on these then maybe look at a slightly bigger engine, this bike copes for me well and over here in NZ cruises well at 100kmh for the time I am doing that. Country roads, this bike is fantastic on those, easy to flick around and comfy as well. The weight I just dont feel it riding these roads. Daily commute again this bike laps it up, is easy to ride and great. So while I get people might focus on the power to weight ratio my advice is ride it. I also agree with others that if they made this a 400cc it would blow away many of the competitors, but again its all about personal choice
