I have had dozens of motorcycles. I have over 700,000 miles on two wheels. 250s should be the motorcycle that every beginner should start on. When you ride a 250, you soon learn that you cannot get your speed back up after braking by just turning the throttle. You learn to pick better lines, stay off the brakes, maintain your momentum, be in the correct gear on the exit of turns, and how to select the correct gear for the correct speed. A 250 just makes you a better rider sooner. I personally find it more fun to be able to ring the motorcycles neck and get everything out of it, without really going that fast as a result. It is actually pointless to have a motorcycle with over 100 hp, that you could not even begin to get near the limits of power that that machine is capable of providing. It’s pointless. In the rest of the world, 50cc size motorcycles are more abundant than every other size engine motorcycle combined. I’m not in the market for a 50, but I have had many 250s. At the same time, I believe a beginner that fits the machine for dirt riding is better off starting on a 250 rather than a 125. The reason, here in Pennsylvania, the terrain is very hilly. I think a beginner is better off making it up these hills even though they chose the wrong gear, than getting stuck in the middle of the hill on a 125, because they didn’t have the engine in a low gear at high-speed. A 250 will crawl up a steep hill, a 125 Has to be screaming in the right gear to make the same hill.A 250 is very forgiving. One thing to consider. On the street,You could outgrow a 250 pretty quickly. Although a 250 may have a seat and foot pegs for a passenger, they’re really not designed for two people, they will tolerate two people, but they’re not designed for it. The suspension will be overwhelmed. A two cylinder 250 will not have the low and pulling power that a single cylinder 250 has. A single cylinder 250 will not have the top end power a two cylinder 250 has. What that means is, with a two cylinder 250, you’ll do a lot more clutch slipping at start out especially on hills. With a single cylinder 250 you won’t be Fanning the clutch lever as much or revving the engine as hard to get going especially on hills. I love 250s. It takes real skill to keep a 250 moving along briskly on a winding hilly back Road. They are great commuter machines in the city and suburbs. I only wish that there was a bigger selection of singles and two cylinder 250s from Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki, and I wish they put better suspensions on them. I really wish they would make two stroke 250s again for street use. Kawasaki at one time made a 250 three cylinder two-stroke.Kawasaki also made a four-cylinder water cooled 250 4-stroke but it never came to the United States. A friend of mine has a four cylinder Kawasaki 250. I rode it, and thought it was a 400. The redline was 19,000 RPM. It sounds like a siren. I love 250s. I am actually shopping for a used Suzuki TU250, that’s how I found this video on KZread.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago. It's rained almost every day since. My last bike, 20 years ago was 60 hp. I've already got the 16 engine sprocket ordered. I'm 120lbs. It jumps and runs. My old ones just moved on out. How do you soften the suspension for light riders.

I started on a 305, waste of time to not just start on a full size bike. Just don't crank the throttle and it doesnt really matter as long as the bike is under 500lbs.

I had this bike twice and regrettably sold it both times for a small displacement sports bike. I now have the opportunity to buy this bike again from a nearby town with under 400 miles, and now I’m trading on the sports bike to have this again. Thanks for the video, it confirms my wanting to own this bike again.

+Wildcat You just sealed my decision. I am 6 ft 1, 210 pounds, and NOT a mechanic. How was the break in? I have never bought new, but used of these are not around me at all. Truth be told, I am already tired of looking at the used nighthawk 250's, in "excellent" or "mint" condition, that have been dropped, gears too tight, no history records, etc. I love the vintage Japanese bikes, but I am tired of having to load it up to the shop, and wait over a month to get it back. I will buy one of these....was a decision between this and the Yamaha sr400. This video helped me decide.

Enjoyed your great little video! I just got my TU about 2 months ago and have put 1500 enjoyable miles on it. It's my first and I'm loving it! I've been considering the other sprocket from everything I've read and I think you've convinced me. Maybe in the spring since I'll probably need to put it away for the winter soon here in Massachusetts, dreading that think it'll be my longest winter ever.

Hello, fellow tu250 rider here. Very glad to have found your video, and yes I watched the whole thing. The roads around your home are beautiful. Am I envious. Mine also has the 16T sprocket put in. It does make the first two gears slightly more useful while riding on local roads. The improvement is more explicit while cruising on the highway. I purchased the TU250 simply because it is a 250cc UJM. Simplicity is its charm. I wouldn't trade it for any other higher performance motorcycles.

That is maybe the best motorcycle review video I've ever seen. In the past, I've had a '94 Nighthawk 250 and a '94 Ninja 250. I've also had other bikes all the way up to an FJR1300 ABS. The FJR was no more fun than the Ninja 250. The Nighthawk 250 was a terd because of bad carburation. These days, I'm riding a Honda Silver Wing ABS scooter, but I miss the little 250 motorcycles the most. Maybe it's a byproduct of growing up in the 80s, but that TU is one of the most handsome bikes I've ever seen, and you can use ALL of its performance every time you ride.

Nice rider review Sqeptick - great to see this bike running down the highway on such a perfect day! Agree the blinker is hard to see in bright daylight and I deal with it by automatically pressing the cancel button at least once after every turn. I'm running low beams all the time since the brights are a little too much in town. LOL 27:23

The z900rs has traction control, and abs which helps for riding in heavy rain. In the summer on a hot day you have the oil on the surface of the asphault mixing with the rain. I was sideways on the Harley a few times due to applying to much rear brake, ride carefully, or wait for it to let up. Living in Florida for a few years pop up rain showers hapoen quite a bit. Now I'm back in Ohio where we have a 8 month riding season, and more gravel something to be cautious of but not afraid.

Your video was the seal of the deal for me. I have been obsessively searching for one for 2 months. Found my 2009 one owner beauty yesterday with 533 miles. Got it for 3 grand. The old guy was firm, and that was fine with me. What a wonderful machine. It was the only used here in the Kansas City area, stealerships wont keep new ones on the floor around here. I was about to drive hundreds of miles to pick up older models on the floor, and get ripped to shreds with "dealer fees". So glad I did not have to do that. And what they say is true.....the red one IS faster. :)

I was bicycle commuter for 10yrs, now I've been on a 150cc scooter for almost 2yrs, and soon to begin with a motorcycle...I'm just addicted to 2 wheels. Great Vid. Hey, just FYI, if you put a little "up" pressure on the shifter lever, then pull the clutch just a little bit the gear change will be perfect. The bike changes when it goes over 5000 miles, rides better! I have noticed a lot of guys that sell the TU prior to putting any good miles on it. I have the sprocket change and 1 size bigger tires, I have had it up to over 90 on the GPS reading and not the speedo. The speedo is not accurate until you change your tires to 1 size up. I have 3 other bikes and I ride this one the most! That is all I can say.

I want a Bonneville (865 cc) and my instructor said that bike would be great for me, but I figure I would start on something smaller for a year or 2 (and half the price) and then do an upgrade. My first bike was a flhs shovelhead. I like the little naked bikes, they look cool and get great gas milage. I like the Yamaha sr400, and this little tu250. I now have a Kawasaki z900rs which is a cool bike and it has a center display so you can see what gear you're in. The only ressons not to take a small bike on a long ride or cross country are with no windshield the wind will best you up doing 500 + miles per day, your butt will hurt, and you have no storage. With some determination you can do the long ride. Please don't give them any ideas, they will have seat belts and air bags on bikes soon enough. They will probably outlaw 2 wheelers, and make everyone ride a 3 wheeler.

Had one a few years ago. Price new was ridiculous at over $5000CND new, but I bot it anyway. I was looking for something retro styled and light. I found it to be the most boring bike I've ever owned (and I'v had dozens over the decades) The motor had no character whatsoever--it sounded like a stationary engine for a generator or something. It didn't seem to like going more than 100kmh and took it's time getting there. I seem to recall the shifting was balky too. I thought maybe it would improve after a break-in period, but I didn't experience any improvement and sold it to a local riding school 4 months later. My next bike was a Honda cbx125 and it was a blast to ride compared to the TU. It would willingly take me over 100kph and the 6 speed gearbox was a pleasure to wind thru. Just a fun, light flickable bike and picked it up (used) for 1/3 of what I paid for the Suzuki. I know they are completely different style/type of motorcycle but for me the fun factor wasn't there with the Tu250.

+resomony That's interesting. I think the TU is good starter bike or a good bike for someone jetting around town. Why not add a wind fairing & a 1/4 twist throttle? It seems like you have to turn the throttle almost all the way around to get up to top speed, then readjust your hand to hold it down to top speed, if you got a shorter throttle you wouldn't have to turn it so far, they are easy to get used to I have one on my suzuki quad.

Now that you mention it, I do remember having to do that with the throttle. Good idea about the mod...never heard of that. I ride a different motorcycle now, but it's funny to think about how much I had to twist with the TUX.

Regarding being light for two-up: the most popular bike in Guangzhou, China for the illegal motorcycle taxis is a Chinese copy of the Honda CB125 from the 70s. They'll carry two no problem, as long as you're OK staying below 50 mph. 😉

The problem with canceling turn signals is the location of the light. Yes, you look at the speedometer often, but your eyes go from the speedometer and back to the road. The light under the speedometer is just dumb. This was worse on my Triumph Legend as the lights are about 4 inches below the gauges. Honda, in 2018, had the lights above the tach, but in, 2019, they are back under the tach. Why is this rocket science?

  • @Sqeptick

    @Sqeptick

Good observation. Because of that, it's just easier/safer to hit the cancel button than it is to check visually to make sure the signals are off.

Instead of constantly checking to make sure your blinker is turned off, try leaving your thumb on it while it's on, and don't take your thumb off until you turn it off. So then you'll know it's not on cuz your thumb isn't on it.

That could work for some folks, but I have a weird habit where I got the cancel button after just about every gear change. I think it comes from the fact that a lot of gear changes happen after a turn. It's annoying, but I've seen other people on KZread even worse than me.

These are cool bikes and less than 4k off the showroom floor but the 250cc not having enough RPM to support certain incline lengths even with gear ratio mods is why I do 650cc or better. I think manufacturers think like I do regarding this: Who goes on interstates with motorcycles especially long distance? Those who do use big bikes with windshields and better ergonomics like a Goldwing or FLT or something.
